There are columns and the foyer right behind sofa. The table is too wide to use as side board :(

Where were you thinking of placing table to use as a bar? I suppose you already considered moving sofa closer to FP and using as sofa table behind?

You know, I would try shifting the sofa nearer the fireplace a bit, then towards the left (window) almost on the edge of the rug. I would also, try to put one of those vases off the fireplaces and place it , on the floor, near that table facing the right column. Place a chess set or backgammon on the table , beside the lamp,thus giving it a purpose . Change the picture on the fireplace for a mirror, too many flower pattern makes for a very heavy effect.
( I personally would remove the other vase up there, to another room, It is too big for the mantel , then keep the picture) and replace with candlesticks on both sides. I think it would look great . Good luck !

I don't think it throws the room off. It seems like that would be a great place to set up a bar! (very pretty room - love your fireplace!)

We are going to play around with the room this weekend. The room is actually too small to move the sofa any closer to fireplace. It appears larger in photos. I'm thinking the table will stick out to far in the entry way to place it there. I have tried a mirror over the fireplace but if we ever turn on the overhead it doesn't look nice at all. I really prefer not to put window treatments over the windows but am open for suggestions? Thank you for all of your ideas!!

Lose it. put your gold chair there with a small round table. Put red chair where gold one is. Nothing else, a nice cozy room don't over do.

Keep floor lamp where it is. But get a shorter lamp for round table next to gold chair.

Could drop leaf go behind sofa?. Or is it too high? Hard to tell. Then place your vases from firepl on each end of it. With a big bowl in center fill with green apples. Leave mantel bare.

You have a lovely Craftsman there. If table isn't a family heirloom and this is your "forever" home with no potential to use it properly in the future, why not sell it on Craigs List and move the sofa to that wall, lowering the picture to 5" above the back of it? That will open your room and allow the beautiful fireplace to make a great first impression. Right now the impression is that the room is not accessible due to the sofa's back blocking people out of the space.

Thanks everyone! I will update with photos soon. What about window treatments? Secretly, hoping for a no but really want to finish this space. Oh, and yes the table is an heirloom but my husband is open to saving for our next home just was hoping to use now.

IF it would work to move the couch under the piece of art where the table is now, will the table fit under the window opposite it? I realize it may stick up just a bit??? Then you could leave that comfy chair in the corner and it will face the fireplace and the other chair could go at the corner of the couch, facing the other chair. The table would still be in the room, but not taking up a prime location. I realize in front of a window may not work for a bar set up, due to the light hitting certain liquids, but a pretty decanter and such would sparkle in the sunlight. You are soooo lucky that this heirloom is in such good shape and actually has a color that is nice for your room.

Sorry now that I see other pic table is too big for behind sofa. Room is small I would just remove it. I like roman shades on windows. But bare is good too. Just feels, more finished when windows have covers.

I haven't been keeping up with your dilemma, but I reallllly like this layout the best. I agree with abbyjean. Could you try the table in front of the window? You then will be able to decide if the height of it bothers you. BTW, unless the two identical plants on either side of the mantel are a definite keeper, I don't think they add to your lovely room. I think something a little cleaner looking would be nice.

I use my family heirloom drop leaf table as a night stand. It is similar to yours. I set it up like a vanity and that is where I do my makeup. The other nightstand is an antique sewing table. I love them both

In the new layout, can you put the drop lead table set up as a bar between the 2 chairs, instead of buying a new table? You might need to space the chairs out a bit more. Love the room! And the dining room! I wouldn't cover those windows, unless you really need the privacy.

It truly does open up your room more!!! Did you try the table under the window? Just curious if it was a possibility still or where it ended up.

One other thought.....the floor lamp by the fireplace chair.....can it be moved to the side of the chair instead of poking up behind it? That looks like such a cozy spot in your room!

Like the second arrangement also. I would like to see simple window treatments such as an inset fabric roman shade just to soften area of wood surround/trim/etc. Also a close-up of the fireplace wall will help to determine what needs to be added/subtracted/changed. Very cozy room!

I agree that the floral arrangements seem too large for the fireplace (which I love ) and with the suggestion to switch the mantel painting for a mirror. As for your table, I actually don't mind it where it is. I think the value of having such a special piece outweighs whether the aesthetics are perfect or not. If I owned it I would find a way to use it no matter what. If you love it, display it with pride!

I think a sideboard would be perfect for this wall, I would go with decoenthusiaste's recommendation of finding a better location for your family heirloom like the entry way, or even a guest room. If you move the table to behind the couch, the couch could move in slightly and not block flow. Then the books / accessories you put on the table will serve as "picture" for the "frame" created by the columns...instead of just highlighting the back of a sofa.

I agree with those that would remove any large wood furniture from the room. It is a really special little room. I hate seeing a chair stuffed in the corner next to the fireplace. How many times have you had a bunch of friends or family over, lit a fire and someone had to drag the chair out to sit facing the fireplace. Actually, you would have to move the table to do that.

I love this forum and your ideas/suggestions! For now, we have the drop leaf table in our upstairs landing in hopes of possible doing a gallery wall there. We have to use the table somewhere and I actually don't mind this arrangement for our special table. Still tweaking the LR and shopping for tables, mantle mirror and lamps. Small table under window is temporary as we had guests over last night :) I think we are on the right track now thanks to your suggestions.
