Re-siding 225 year-old Farmhouse

We completely renovated our 225 year old house on the Hudson. Here are some shots of the exterior siding re-do. We used primed clapboard siding and then painted it white.

A beautiful home… I hope they re-nailed the sheathing, and used tarpaper. Hang those shutters again too!

It is beautiful, and I like it a lot without the shutters. I'm a traditionalist for exteriors on a house this old--do you know if it had shutters originally? I think the front entry needs boosting, with or without shutters.

Nice! Crisp & fresh. Looks like you got a good building paper beneath the siding as well. I bet your heating bills will plummet.

    Love it. Great job.

Thanks all! Shea: we debated about the shutters (yes they were original and now reside in the basement for some future project) but we decided we liked the house just simple and clean. Schuler: we used spray foam insulation through the entire house and radiant heat. The man who delivers my oil said we use half the oil that houses half the size of ours use up here in very cold upstate NY. We left the original windows on the first floor and had storm windows made but the second floor windows are Marvin made to match the look of the lower. I'm sure that helps also.

The chimneys were on the exterior and now they are on the interior. How is that? Love the little porch rooms on the back, back doors. What are those spaces?

First, the house is stunning, and the results were well worth the effort. If you decide to reinstall exterior shutters, we would love to assist. If any, or all, of the original shutters are in disrepair, our cedar louvered panels ( http://www.shutterland.net/louvered-shutters) appear similar to the ones removed. You can get prices and specs quickly online.

Looks great a real classic beauty! When you decide to tackle the basement give us a shout! Don't use wood and studs basements are moist especially out East.

Thanks All. rohollo: the chimney you see on the before was added probably around 1050's to vent the furnace. The original chimney on that side was topped off at the roof. We re-claimed and added a new "top" to that side and added a whole new fireplace to the other side of the house. The 2 pints contain the kitchen on one side and a huge bookcase in the LR on the other.

Beautiful job. You gave this wonderful old place years of new life. I am so happy that you chose white and not some weird tan color. Your kitchen is perfect for the house. If you ever decide to re-install shutters I hope you will try to match the originals, including the hardware. Years ago I assisted on an old home renovation and we drove around the countryside looking for derelict houses that might have original shutter hardware. Now they probably make reproductions. Sometimes wisteria takes years to bloom. Patience. Look at that beautiful river. Wait, you do! Every day. How lucky you are. :)

Thanks Marilyn. Shutters are always and issue with me. I like them much better when the actually function but what a to-do that is sometimes! I certainly do enjoy my river view even in the Winter!

Lucianna - lovely! Did you put radiant heating under the hardwood floors, or....? Just curious, as we, too, have an old house (stone) and I would much prefer infloor heating to the blast of forced air.
That's a gorgeous view, Lucianna, I'd love that too, I have the snow, but I'm looking at a meadow and woods :)
Bubblyjock, I have radiant heating under my hardwood floors, it feels great and heats beautifully. Not as warm as the stone floors get, but very good. The stone floors actually get hot. It's a hot water system, electric would not be warm enough as the sole heat source. The floors do creak a bit in the winter though, doesn't bother me, it's not overly creaky, just a bit. Certainly worth it to have beautiful floors and wonderful heat. I have a stone house too. :)

Bubblyjock: yes we did put the radiant under the hardwoods (actually the hardwoods were laid over after the radiant was in. The second floor has the original wide plank pine (some of the boards are over 20" wide!) but we choose to use Mannington Laminate flooring throughout the first floor. We were advised laminate would be much better than solid wood with radiant heat and are satisfied with that decision.

Wisteria's a nasty invasive. Once you get it going there's no stopping it; it'll creep into your nearby woods and grow over and kill young trees. Have you noticed all the vines smothering even full grown trees beside the interstates? Oriental Bittersweet, wisteria, all those vines gardeners were urged to plant "for vertical interest" have "jumped the garden fence" and are killing millions of trees. "Get the Roundup, Jeeves!"
