I think we will take your advice and paint it entirely teal. I agree that orange looks spectacular. Which shade of yellow do you think would go best with the blue of the curtains and still keep from clashing with the rich gold of the mirror? Perhaps peeks of chartreuse? Should I make two separate seating areas? Once we mount the flat screen above the fireplace, the 30ft wall with the French doors is all mine :)

Don't worry about orange clashing with the gold mirror frame. They will go terrific together. I like the blue in the drapery, because there is blue in your rug. So there is a overall blue vibe and when you find the right accessories ( in lime, orange or lemon yellow or a combination of those colors) the look will be cohesive.

I think you need to look at your artwork, too. White mats will help. See the photos above.

One last thing. Do you think the fireplace mantle would look good painted the same teal in a high gloss finish? I wonder.

What a great color! I commend you for being brave, and right. The picture propped behind your TV looks to be the jumping off point. Is it the right size to put over the fireplace? Or a bit too wide? At any rate, it looks like there's a touch of orange in that, so I might use that as a cue for color in your space. And look! There's guitar in the corner....in a beautiful golden, not quite orange tone. This is going to be a terrific room.

Be careful with teal & orange. You do not want to look like a Miami dolphin fan club. Nothing against the team.....

I love where this is going. I would suggest investing in a long circular pendant light chandelier that goes very low with a low table beneath it in your staircase. If you can find them with orange shades so much the better.

I love the idea of a chandelier in the stairwell. What shape should the low table be? Round seems too predictable, but square almost seems awkward. Another question I have is that once the entire room is teal, what do I do with the wall on the opposite side of the stairs, the huge one that goes all the way up? Wallpaper perhaps?

I love the peacock idea. The fireplace screen has a peacock on it, so I definitely think a piece of peacock art would look beautiful. Should I place it on a wall adjacent or opposite the fireplace?

Another pressing question. While I absolutely LOVE the rug in our room here, I feel like it's too small for the room. I'd like to find a way to add another rug or even 2 smaller ones. Is that doable? How would I work placement? I am planning to get 2 sofas for the room, and perhaps a couple of pairs of chairs to create seating arrangements throughout.

Right, the rug is too small... Love the idea of painting the whole room teal. I see that you have a painting that looks like it sometimes covers the TV set. Would like to see a more subtle TV installation, perhaps wall mounted, so that you can really conceal it when you're entertaining others (except for Superbowl of course..).

No!!!! No peacock art! Let the color be the belle of the ball! It's beautiful and rich and classy without a " peacock" theme.

Hi LovenestI have been searching for images to demonstrate what I had in mind (of course, I can't find it now). If you don't want a round table why not go for a Moroccan hexagonal shape? It is on trend and very much in keeping with the colour scheme you are leaning towards.Failing that there is a company here on Houzz that do the most gorgeous Moroccan lamps that yield beautiful shadows and light. Here is an example of both.For the wall of the staircase itself, I think you should wallpaper it but this will be determined by linking the upstairs with the downstairs. Given that that lovely carpet is a feature, you may wish to experiment with placing it at an angle once the wall is painted. However that can be hit or miss unless one is in situ. I would suggest that as your room will now be dark with the teal, you amp up your lighting for the evening carefully watching where there are dark spots and plan on introducing general, task and ambient lighting - possibly on dimmer switches.The next carpet could be cream - almost a cream berber (continuing the Moroccan sub text here, although I don't mean it to become theme-y). It should be strong on texture but not on pattern so as not to compete with the other carpet.If you can add a plan, perhaps sofa placement and choice can also be addressed.CheersAntoinette

Also, you're right, we are planning to mount the flat screen above the fireplace, (hubby insists) and I was hoping to either frame it, or cover it entirely when it is not being used. The room is indeed very dark and we are planning to place lots of lamps and led candles throughout.

I would probably use two rugs, because of the shape of your sectional. And that also depends on the rest of the room, and how it flows into a hallway, etc. Your current rug might work on the end of the room opposite the fireplace, and a solid-color (light) rug within the sectional portion of the room might work.

Antoinette, thank you!! A hexagonal table would be perfect in the space. Also, thank you for the advice regarding the rugs. I've wanted to wallpaper that staircase wall since we moved in, however, I'm not sure I can link the upstairs and downstairs, as the master bedroom and our daughter's room is already "done" (if anything is ever "Done". ha.) I'm attaching some photos of the rest of the stairway, and one from the top of the stairs. I feel like there is enough of a separation to not have to carry the theme into the rooms.

I think painting all the walls teal does make the most sense as well. I think the biggest change you need to be concerned about after doing that is increasing the light in the room. You will need several floor lamps and a larger table lamp at least; hanging a large mirror above the mantle will reflect more natural light into the room. I can't quite tell the exact color of your rug, but I would recommend changing it out for a lighter option to contrast with the walls like several of the suggestion photos that Houssaon posted. I also think lime yellow or green with golden oranges would look nice with the teal.

gillianlf Thank you for the suggestion. We are definitely planning to add more light, just wanted to get the paint/accent colors nailed down before I bought lamps, we are going to mix warm bronze and deep gold for the lamps. While I can't hang a mirror above the fireplace (my husband insists on mounting his flat screen there) I am planning to frame the flatscreen, and put two very large mirrors on either side, like the pictures below show. I think we will add a lighter rug, but we just spent a fortune on this one, and though the pics don't show it clearly, it does pick up the teal tone of the walls really well.

I realize over the fireplace is where most men and many designers want to mount TVs these days, but do you really want to be craning your neck constantly to watch TV try it at that height on top a dresser on the other wall before you take the plunge and see if you still like the idea. Just saying.

I do like the mirror panel idea; another take on that could be mirror backed built in shelving on each side of the fireplace.

How handy is your husband? How handy are you? I see built in bookcases spanning the wall where the windows are. You could end up with 2 window seats in the process and the tv could be placed in the middle between the 2 windows. I have seen some amazing built in looks with IKEA Billy bookcases. You could hang simple woven wood shades, roman shades, or patterned roller shades with the fabric coming over the top of the roll (think toilet paper)

Better ideas 1 and 2:

I don't like the tv above the fireplace either. For multiple reasons.

Reasons for no TV over the fireplace: 1) I had a tech guy and a fireplace guy tell me putting the TV over a fireplace not originally constructed to accommodate electronics is a bad idea for the electronics (heat issues). 2) The viewing angle is too high to get the best picture on modern televisions (distortion). 3) The light from the window on the right is going to cast over the screen, making for not optimum viewing. It's really best where it is right now for viewing. Also, as that's not what you see when you enter the house and look to the right, you can have "pretty" room, and he can have a room where watching TV works. Best of both partner's wishes!

Groveraxle, I really appreciate the pics you posted. I have given it some thought and spoken to hubby, and he agrees we should leave the tv on the wall where it is currently. I am hoping to mount it, and do something like the pic I posted above with all the other pictures and art hanging around it. The walls in this room are made of plaster, and are a bit difficult to drill, so if mounting is not an option for the television, I will have to consider an entertainment center. So with that said, I need to start thinking about how the furniture in this room will be arranged..

Yea! Loved your picture of the TV with art around it. If that's not possible, maybe a low white unit with glass doors (so magic black boxes are in there, but still work with aiming the remote). Tall shallow shelves on either side?

No entertainment center. Those are so yesterday. Keep the console you have, or get a longer one and just let the TV sit on it. I wouldn't even attempt to mount it on a plaster wall. (Believe me, I know about plaster from living in a 100+ year old house.)

The decision that no peacock art shall be used has been made. I do love my peacock fireplace screen, though, and it gets lots of compliments, so it stays :)
Groveraxle, I am still trying to figure out an easy way to hang things on the walls without having to drill (it's too difficult for me to drill, even using a masonry bit, so I have to get my husband to do it each time). What solutions did you use on your walls? I have some things on command hooks, but I worry about using them with heavier items.

Command hooks don't work with anything over a few ounces, from what I can tell. I have no real solution except to drill and use screws. If the item I'm hanging is heavy, I use longer screws, if really heavy, then two long screws. But the heaviest item I've hung is maybe 20 lbs. I wouldn't even attempt a TV.

I think your tv would look great sitting on a white console such as this one.
