Not sure you need a chair rail unless you will have a few chairs against the walls, but if you do add it, be sure to paint it the same color as the walls. Add some drama with curtains that will pick up the red. Find a centerpiece you like, anything from a pretty large bowl with candles on either side to a dried arrangement from what you have growing outside.

I would break it up with the blue below the chair rail, would add interest to the red on the chairs. Some luxurious draperies and it will be gorgeous.

I have a lot of big purchases, including window treatments that are missing, but afterwards I will consider your suggestion. Thank you for responding.

Colonialgp: I do have a large bowl with flowers and candlesticks. They've been put away in prep for the painting. I thought the idea of a chair rail was to add interest. And I have some painting to hang that I would put above the rail. Window treatments come next. Thank you for the suggestions!

Instead of a chair rail, have you considered wainscoting? If you're looking to add depth and interest to your dining room, that's a really nice option. I wouldn't recommend painting the walls blue, as that would probably be too much with the red fabric in the chairs. Stay with a neutral color on the wall, such as cream, light gray or light tan, to best compliment the red chairs. The photos below show wall colors in the shades I would suggest. I hadn't considered wainscoting although I do like that in many rooms. I think it might make the room feel even smaller. I picked a cream like the one showing by the round light. And I agree that the blue will be too much with the red chairs. Thank you for your suggestions.

You could always use wainscoting painted gray with beige walls. Or wainscoting painted dark tan with beige walls. As long as the colors compliment the red chairs, a light colored wainscoting would keep the room bright.
