Went outside comfort zone, and need help with color pallette!

We broke out of our comfort zone of neutrals for our living room and decided to go bold with 2 accent walls anchoring the fireplace and painted them a teal color. The walls throughout the house are a light beige, high ceilings, and light trim, so we just needed some color. I have smoke gray couch & loveseat, dark wood tables, and chocolate brown chair & ottoman. Since this is outside of our comfort zone on color, I need help on accent colors. Pillows for the couch, mantle pieces etc.
The walls are close to the color of the stripe in the one picture, the other 2 pics are of the room.

This seems like a very difficult colour to make work in your space. Do you absolutely love it how it looks or would you consider repainting another colour with less use of feature walls and stripes.
It's really difficult to see your room, but orange works well with teal, beige, brown and grey too. You'll have to let the teal colour come back in accents too.
Or maybe a more subdued colour scheme will work for you:

Sorry about the dark photos, my camera on my phone really sucks. I will try to take better photos and post. That's actually just one side of the room, I can take a picture of the whole room and upload it, right now the whole room is just a hodge podge of stuff, so we are in the process of redoing everything. We actually really do love the color, and I think my hubby might kill me if I make him paint it again, lol. Thank you for the suggestions on the color schemes too
  • 12 years ago
I loved the first picture, but after that it looked like a different space.
Sorry, I just re-read the post. I do not like the solid teal walls. I do like the horizontal stripe.
The first picture isn't my living room. It's just a picture that shows the color of the paint we used. The other 2 pictures are of the actual room. The pictures are dark, so I knew the color wouldn't really show up in the pictures that's why I used the other pic to show the color. I will provide lighter pics

It will be much better if you turn on over head lights or open curtains. It looks like there is a lot of stuff in the room to work with or remove.
I understand what you did....sorry for the trouble.
No problem. Yes there is a lot of stuff here and there, which is why we are redoing it. It doesn't have any long walls in the room so it's been challenging to come up with furniture placement and decor. Other then the 2 walls beside the fireplace, 2 other walls are broken up by a doorway or a door, the other one has 3 windows. The front door is angled just like the fireplace directly across from the fireplace. So only 1 corner in the room as well.

If you'd like advice for furniture arrangement etc., you could post a floorplan too. Doesn't have to be to scale, but if you do a simple drawing with clearly readable measurements, we can maybe come up with some ideas for you. Together with better photos it will give us a good idea of your space :-)

Find some silk velvet ikat pillows that speak to you and use as a jumping off point for some additional color.

carolins, that would be great. I will see what I can provide. We have a corner that has a DVD case my brother-in-law built, and I've tried to make that corner a movie themed corner, since my husband has a lot of movies. I'll sketch up the shape of the room, and get dimensions tonight. I'll take some better photos also.

Here is a rough floor layout, and where the furniture is currently. I will have exact measurements tomorrow, but this is how the approx. placement of windows, fireplace, doors etc.

Lime baby lime! You already have a groovy space with a great blend. Why not throw in a lime to add to this fun space? When you have yellows and blues, lime is a yummy choice! :)

I did my bedroom in a really dark teal color. I love it. I have a 10 ft wide window in the room which brings in a lot of light. But all dark teal walls, darker color stained wood bed set with all ivory linens (bed spread, pillows, curtains & rug) then I bought 2 dark deal accent pillows to throw on the ivory bedding. I'm really loving the look. I plan on getting 2 wingback chair redone in ivory to add to the room.

Your furniture layout looks pretty good. Don't see another, better option immediately. I'm wondering if it would be better to paint that whole stretch of wall, from the corner where the floor lamp is to the TV wall. Including the wall above the mantle. So it won't be so broken up. The current teal may be a bit too dark for that.
Maybe something like SW 0020 Peacock Plume

But if you like the teal as it is now, try to find pillows that have that colour in it and maybe have a 'stronger' pattern than the current pillows. I would paint the trim the same colour as the doors :-)
Forgot to mention, pillows above are from Pier1. But it's always difficult to judge the colours on screen.
Thank you carolins, I love those pillows and I even have a Pier1 by my house. I'm happy to know I did good with the furniture arrangement, because there isn't many options with my space. Can you suggest anything for decor on the mantle? The painting is sentimental to us so we'd like to keep it there, and we'd like to incorporate family photos into the mantle but I'm at a loss on how to make it look right. I appreciate all your help
  • 12 years ago
Hi cdm, I think if you try to pull the teal with an accent color as suggested with the cushions and some accent pieces, this would really help balance the color around your room and pull it all together. I know you mentioned the picture over the fireplace has sentimental value, could it be hung on another wall in the living room, possibly the wall behind the couch to the left of the window? If you could hang a piece of art above the fireplace with the teal and the accent colors in it, this would unify the 3 walls there at the fireplace, which is your focal point in the living room. Just a thought.......
cdm4, I agree with rosecottagehome about finding a larger art piece ((with more teal) for your mantle. (only if you love it, not just to fill the space, though)
You current art might be perfect to the left of the mantle in the chair area.
You clock would look nice on the curtain wall, where the smaller piece is now.
I don't quite understand the wall grouping by your floor lamp. Could you send pics of the corner area?
    Have a great day!
Lol, well there isn't much to understand in that corner really. They have both been blank, so I've been using them as "canvases". We would like a cross wall, but also want to do some sort of movie theme since that is where our dvd case is. So it was more of us trying to decide...they are just up with temporary hooks. Hope that makes sense.
You have a lot of small items, which can make it look very busy and if you're not careful, cluttered. Sometimes a couple of larger items just work better.
Now, I'm a bit of a minimalist myself, but I would remove all the smaller items from the mantle piece. And I would remove the movie items from that wall.
You really can keep walls empty. It will provide a resting point for your eyes :-)

Here's an interesting site with images about creating a photo wall. It's a German site, but the images are interesting :-)
    http://erstes-og.de/2012/bilderrahmen-chaotisch-aber-ordentlich-aufgehangt-so-gehts/

I think the family photos could go on the wall between windows and patio door or maybe next to the front door, where the movie items currently are.

I really like the empty wall next to the front door. Makes your room look more spacious and brings more attention to the collection of crosses.
Oops, I was looking at your earlier pic of the arrangement. I see that you have left it blank now - agree with carolins, it looks great just as is.
@moggie73, pssst... just between you and me, I photoshopped that wall blank ;-) Glad you agree that it looks better ;-)

Thank you all so much for all your help and suggestions. The painting above the mantel actually has thin lines of teal in it that we pulled the color from for the walls. We are removing the floor lamp, and got a sofa table to put along that wall. I was thinking about a lamp, bowl for our keys, catch all, some family photos. Above it on the wall a mirror, with the crosses scattered on that wall. Above the movie case, a large piece of movie themed art. Think that would work?
I love that you decided to go with a bold color, but what you need now is balance. You have the deep teal on 2 walls, but if you turn your back to those walls you are still in a sea of neutral. Get a teal throw for over a couch, a large teal print on one of the neutral walls, an ottoman in teal, curtains with teal and in the pattern, a throw rug, vases, flowers.

If you look at the attached picture you see they didn't just add a solid splotch of orange, but dispersed orange through the rooms in different textures and patterns.
Thank you Jennifer, yes I plan on finding a teal lamp or one with a teal lamp shade, and some teal accents on the sofa table, then of course some teal patterned pillows for the couch and loveseat.
That's a really nice console table. Definitely a teal (base or shade) lamp and a bowl on it and a mirror above, pretty and practical. I would leave the crosses where they are. If you put family photos on your console table and add the crosses to that wall, it will look cluttered. Too many small items dotted around in one area :-) And I like where you have them now. Looks good.

Have you considered putting the family photos between the sofa and the glass door?
I would continue the teal over the fireplace and move the current art to another side of the room. The movie scene decor might be better centralized in the TV area; maybe add movie poster art for the other accent wall. The wall décor above the TV could also be moved to bring color to another side of the room.
I think I want to put the family photos along the mantle in the style that carolins posted with the floating shelves. The movie case is on the opposite side of the room from the TV, that's why I was going to put a movie themed print above the case, it's a beautiful case that my brother-in-law built for my husband.

Should the console table have a tall skinny lamp, or should I be looking for a chunkier one? What are the feelings about wall decals? We've had one and never put it up. We have one that is a family name, our last name initial, with the year we got married. Think that would look ok above the TV? The initial is in a light blue with the other words in a light tan
  • 12 years ago
Or... the family photos where the clock now is? On two shelves above each other?
I quite like the mantle with the painting and the word 'family' only, as I photoshopped.

Difficult to give an opinion on the wall decal. Can you use painters tape and stick it up there temporarily, without pealing the back off so you can see how it looks? You won't have to post it. It's your room, you will have to enjoy seeing it :-)

I'd move the movie case closer to the TV to keep themed items together- the wall next to the glass door, perhaps, with the clock or crosses above it?

I suggested the space above the TV for the movie décor because to me these items can be placed higher on a wall, unlike photos, for instance. The current pieces look great against the teal and could be moved to the opposite wall.

I love the floating shelves, but you have vertical molding above the fireplace, so I'm not sure it would work there. I'd place them above your new sofa table next to the door.
The movie case won't fit along that wall by the sofa, the carpet only goes part of the way and then it's tile, half of that wall space is my kitchen. I wasn't thinking floating shelves on the mantle, just having the photos sitting along the mantle overlapping each other in the same fashion as they are on the floating shelves. Here is a mock up of the decal above the TV. I'm not sure how accurate to scale it is.

I like it. Photos along the mantle would work; I'd switch the clock and current art.
