The columns and stairs aren't the problem - Your asphalt driveway, garage door and and landscaping are bleak and uninviting.

I would consider a new driveway of pavers, and many more trees, shrubs, flowers, edibles, etc - A local landscaper would best be able to work with you to make a plan for improvements...
...tho it may be as simple as a coat of black paint to make your garage door look better (Black since that appears to be the color of your front door)

Nice house. Consider toning down the bright white shutters, garage door, trim & columns with a neutral paint that matches the rest of the house. (For a less glaring look.) Driveway will not look so dark either, by contrast. Replace solid front door with a multi-lite glass door. Remove bush blocking front stairs & replace it with a low stone wall that encompasses your entry area. If you like, create a front patio by bringing the wall out over the front lawn a bit. Also terrace the lawn area along the driveway using pachysandra or periwinkle. Replace lighting fixtures with larger ones - preferably a simple modern style that works better with the home's modern elements. (You have colonial carriage types - pretty, but a bit lost.) Last, plant a dwarf fruit tree or some large shrubs to the left of the house to counter-balance the height of the facade . The columns are very elongating. Some greenery will soften that.

Thanks so much for the helpful suggestions and details. The house is about 20 years old and renovations are overdue! Neutral paint - so should the paint be matched to the siding? You are correct the current color is def not working : ) The driveway does need a facelift as well. Thanks for pointing out the light fixtures - that is a very easy fix. Yes, I dislike the elongating columnular look which seems to be even more exagerated, given the slope of the driveway... I would really like to put some sort of seating area to the left - not sure how that would work.

More dogs!! But seriously... I think there is something about the garage door and the area above it that throws me off. It is hard to tell with only a partial picture, but it seems like the painted brick area (is it painted brick) feels off balance with the garage door below it. I would try to think of ways to make the garage door feel a bit heavier visually and dial back the painted area above it.

It may be just a matter of changing the paint on those places.

You're very welcome. Home is in nice shape for it's age, really. Yes, I'd match your siding color - but for some interest, suggest one shade lighter than your siding. This will tone down the look of the columns so they blend in. Then you don't have to remove them. There are computer programs where you download your home's photo and play with paint colors. The top paint mfgrs have these tools on their websites to help you choose good combos. And yes, a seating area would be lovely. It's not that difficult to do. Some ground leveling, adding sand for drainage & choosing a flat stone or paver that blends with your brickwork would create a nice downward sweeping effect. I think this would trick the eye & lower the height of the house, as well.

I agree with most opinions on here. I would paint the garage door and shutters black like the front door. Although, I would paint them more of a charcoal black (dark grey).
I would replace the light fixtures with either black or stainless ones. Make sure they are nice and big and dramatic. Landscaping is what will transform your house the most.

Besides building out the front of your house to eliminate the columns, there's not much you can do. I would leave them white like the trim. If you landscape the house nicely, the columns won't be the main focus of your house and won't be noticed.

Hi bluetopaz You need a retaining wall along your driveway and a new sidewalk to your front door. A good landscape architect is needed to help you with the wall and some plantings and trees etc. I think when this is done then you can see if the pillers still bother you. I think your house is fine.

I think your house is gorgeous and I LOVE the columns! In addition to painting the shutters and garage door the smae color, I would also paint the detailing in each window black. Love the front porch idea! To me, it seems like there needs to be some kind of very defineable edge between the lawn and the driveway. Maybe you could terrace the hill from the driveway to the lawn? Definitely get rid of the bush in front and, if you extend/enlarge the porch, maybe you could also enlarge the stairs ( which appear from the photo to be a bit narrow).

The steps are out of scale with the rest of the house. Consider integrating a retaining wall and a more grand set of steps. With a house that tall sitting up on a slope you need some mass to ground it and integrate it with the landscape.

Thanks Garrett Churchill Inc.! Yes, I was thinking about a complete revision for the stairs. Perhaps a much wider stair case and a relocation for the entry point further down the front lawn. Current thoughts are to achieve a softer curved flowing line with an extension to the left (under the l/r window) for a stone seating area. I like the idea of integrating a retaining wall to define the curved stone stairs and would prob need to extend that retaining wall to define the seating area.

I agree the columns aren't the issue here, besides there's not much can be done as they are needed to support the roof. You could improve on the usual suspects: driveway, landscaping as other people have suggested.

Wow Dytecture --- that is almost what I was trying to say - only I had in my mind where the seperate sidewalk started a little closer to the front with a retaining wall. But, what a visual to go by. I like it a lot.
