Thanks! I am really iffy on couch. I bought a two piece fitted white slip cover that is supposed to resemble pottery barn look. Don't have it yet. Not sure the green is going to cut it.

I think you could embrace the green...but have to go bold on accessories...orange or yellow maybe.

HI -- My father in law had this very same sofa only his had red and gold damask fabric . This is worth recovering . You are not going to like the slipcovers , I know for sure . AS for the wall color , don't add another strong color to the mix . Stick with a pale blue/grey or a soft green . Try "Revere Pewter" by Benjamin Moore . It is a neutral that has a slight green tint to it . I hope you are getting rid of that deep yellow color around the fireplace mantel . I think I would remove that old mantel , it does nothing for the room. There are such nice electric and fuel non venting fireplaces now that would work nicely . Watch your patterns -- rug drapes and cushions , that's three . Maybe re- think the cushions , find ones that have a bit more green in the fabric and vary the sizes .

HI -- If you can , that might be a good idea . The one you have is pretty but too blue and too much with the drapes . Maybe something with just a texture in a neutral or a natural fiber like a wool that looks like a sisal . Maybe a Berber or something a little more woven or knitted or a little retro like the sofa's age .

I would love to recover it but I would need to do it organically and it's not in the budget. I had a nice neutral modern couch prior but the base cushion ripped and I wanted to be rid of furniture that was treated with flame retardants. So I bought this old one but I am finding the color a challenge. I love the size and sleekness though. Until they make affordable non flame retardant furniture, I feel stuck. Any suggestions? I know the slipcover will probably look like a dorm room throwback :( Also, are 3 patterns too much or is that the max? Thanks for the advice!

The curtains are pretty so if you are working with the green sofa at the moment, I would suggest that you utilize those two design elements for your scheme i.e. silver grey, white and moss green. Casual throw cushions don't really go with that style of couch but if you need them consider a different shape and size e.g. round, with an unobtrusive design that won't fight with the curtains, and continues your theme. Definitely go for a plain rug in silver grey or a slightly tone darker. Silver grey on the walls with white woodwork. No clutter on the mantlepiece and a large mirror over it. Z Gallery's largest Omega Mirror is fabulous and it won't break the bank. The style of your sofa is Empire, I believe - very stylish and rather formal but you can be a little eclectic in your choice of coffee table and matching end tables. What paintings or wall art do you have?

The lighter grey to not interfere with your grey lamp.

it all depends on YOUR taste. maybe you like the green with the blue!! personally i think it is funky and wonderful. i would not paint with grey to neutralize. i would use warm white paint and add in more colours: http://maggieblanchett.com/redflowers.html which will explain the reason for the blue and green combo. add in a third colour like bright yellow or orange in cushions or a lamp or decor stuff. . i think you will like the results!!

Consider upholstery painting, there are a lot of resources online. I havent tried yet but I have similar color couches that I just cant seem to work with

Absolutely love your faux fireplace/mantel... please, please, share... where did you find it? And what a great find it is!

Also, your couch is workable if you truly want a theme that's retro and funky. But it seems like your other accessories are more contemporary (curtain, rug, and toss pillows). You can certainly mix the two design styles to arrive at your "own" style. But I would recommend incorporating more accessories that are funky so that your couch isn't feeling too lonely! Add bold colors and lots of texture too!

Incorporate bright, vibrant, warm colors (if you are not afraid of color)!

That green sofa is dark and will need pops of color to bring it alive, so consider bright pink/fuchsia, bold orange, lemon yellow, etc. Your wall color can be very neutral (the room will have enough color coming from your accents). If I had to choose from the greys in your photo, I would pick the lighter one. Hope that helps!

This wonderful shade of grey is one of several available at Home Depot in their new Ralph Lauren line... It is called Lamp Room Grey. I think greys are the hardest (after yellows!) to find that works with the light in your space... Lots are too green, some are even on the pink/mauve vein (ugh), and, of course are really shades of blue.

All that said, I love the architectural details ( and the warm white color) in the faux fireplace, love the orangey wall color (goes great with the dark grey lamp shade! I think you have a terrific design sense from the photos.

Can't say I am enamored with the green sofa though.. If when you get everything all painted and set up, if you can't live with the sofa, try local consignment shops for a sofa. Also, I'd wait to purchase an area rug until all painted as well. Too many decisions to make with just the vision in your head!

I forgot to mention the blue and white rug..it is cute but not good in that room.. Wait until all the painting is done, furnishings arranged, drapes hung (IKEA has a nice selection for incredible prices) I like high hung high near ceiling and to the sides of windows to heighten the room and widen the windows...preferably in white. Then work on a rug...maybe a sisal or a soft muted neutral. Good luck!

I think you should embrace the funky sofa and add warmth and color rather than try to tone everything down with cool colors. Google the Hotel Monaco in Alexandria and look at the lobby. Green couch, teal walls, rusts and color. I have been in this lobby and it is stunning! Upscale, chic, and comfy. Remember green is a neutral and like leaves on a plant, no flower combination ever looks bad. Do not cover the sofa! Keep the mantle and play up the features. With a lot of color in the room, opt for airy, white simple curtains. You can these in the lobby photo also.

Hi Jenn, love the sofa, what if you make the sofa your focal point. Whites or neutrals on the wall, white with a grey undertone, and a rug that brings in the green and some other colors that you like. Adding art with that same green would look awesome..

I have a color in my house I think might work. It's called French Linen by Porter. I didn't use Porter paints, but I did use their paint chip to have mine mixed in another brand. I didn't realize until it went on that it has a very SLIGHT green to it.

Get rid of or cover the couch...there really nothing there worthy of saving. Go light...with muted dove gray, warm, but light tan to rose, and a butter to cream to trim out.

If you love the green, then you have to go with it. Normally I love blue and green together, but this shade of avocado goes best with warm neutrals or accents such as orange and beige. There are so many shades of grey. For me, it is the most difficult color to coordinate. Perhaps a greige would work best. Something with grey and beige elements- that kind of putty color that is hard to define. I also love this green with shiny brass or gold gilt accents. Have fun! Are the sofa's cushion covers removable? If so, you could try dyeing them black, which would free up your options a lot. Use a good dye, and lots of it, for the best results. Dylon is good.

A professional designer puts an entire room plan together to give you direction because until all the pieces are put in place, the puzzle never looks quite finished. If the sofa and rug are keepers for you (not sure rug is going to work permanently), I would paint the room a nice soft subtle shade of gray green like Sherwin Williams Rare Gray SW6199. I would also consider window treatments in either a solid taffeta to blend with paint or possible a stripe with subtle varying shades of a green gray. The place I would put a punch of color but in earth tones would be a narrow rectangular glass tile on the fireplace. Keep the room in the soft gray green tones for an overall monochromatic color scheme with pillows of many different shades (neutral and soft - one nice needlepoint rectangular shaped in the center with a hint of the rug blue - the others all blend but are earth toned). Your art can contain the rug blue for a nice punch of color to help pull it together, but otherwise try not to match the blue nor bring in out in other places.

i just covered my sofa in a green I think of as plant green. I used an accent wall in black fox SW and then Beni Moore's Bennington grey.the fabric is woven of organic cotton, so I would suggest using the green as your color. Bring in plants- a large ficus or a big norfolk pine and suddenly your green sofa might work.

I'd paint the sofa frame....with a neutral (like pic) or a fun complimentary color if you're more daring! I adore your sofa!

i'm with epatm5, the green of the sofa is a neutral, the teal would be spectacular. Then use a warm sisal color for the rug. Spark up the sofa with pillows if you want, but in my mind they should have more texture than the sofa to bring them to the forefront, and pops of teal and maybe a metallic gold, bringing in the rug and wall colors. For me the curtains would be white with maybe a top or side border of a velvet in the same tone as the sofa. Then of course art. Don't' take down the fireplace, add to it. But don't get me started, I could start all over again with a whole different set of ideas. Make sure what you buy can be returned, why I love Home Goods.

From the rug, flooring, drapery and pale olive sofa, the story of the room appears to be soft and low contrast. The perfect compliment to all of this is the pale grey/blue swatch pictured behind the sofa - almost like the blue in the sofa pillows but a bit greyer. Benjamin Moore's "Smoke" 2122-40 or "Iceberg" 2122-50 or even a bit darker "gossamer blue" 2123-40 would lift the room. They are all cool colors and would bring out the warm tones and texture of the sofa while enhancing the neutral flooring and draperies. Order large 8 x 8 samples from Benjamin Moore's website and check on every wall in the space. There is no way you can choose a wall color with small patches.

Bite the Bullet and Recover the couch. Love your rug and drapes. Lots of grays will work just decide how much gray you want with the existing drapes.

@ lefty47, I agree, not entirely old, perhaps, but the OP hasn't posted since February, so I suspect she's long-gone. Not that such discussions aren't often useful, though!

I would go bold on the walls with Valspar Amberwood or Spiced Cinnamon and paint your ceiling the gray in your drapery panels with crisp white trim on the mantle. The area rug blue does not look good with the earthy green sofa, it is too clean and cool. You need a burnt orange rug like this http://www.homedecorators.com/P/Belmont_Area_Rug/60/570/ or if you want a more contemporary design like this http://www.homedecorators.com/P/Granada_Area_Rug_I/ and it will pull the wall color down to the floor and be complimentary to your green sofa.

I adore balboa Mist as a beautiful soft grey...I also think your choice of revere pewter is one you will not regret..I think Mantel salvageable if patched. Try White dove as mantel and trim color with either grey...a superior and classy look. Definitely no green sofa in my opinion:) good luck

I used Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter duplicated at Home Depot for the walls. I love how well it goes with my green furniture.

The couch is fabulous and fun! Love the color, the length, the texture. Seems like a great place for a party. And it's not over the top. But white would cover up its personality.

Many great ideas and comments. It can be SO overwhelming. I have gone crazy trying to find the perfect grey that doesn't read blue. Finally found BM Silver Satin (Aura line). It is fantastic, very pale grey/silver and wonderfully reflective to keep the room bright. Play up the uniqueness of your sofa once your walls are done. You'll find pieces and accessories overtime. Don't rush and have fun with it!

Take a look at old village paints very nice product, Steeple white by them is very nice is not exactly white it looks more like some kind of gray. I used it and was happily surprise.

Thank you so much for all the feedback! It is so helpful. I will upload a couple recent pics. I went with BM Metro gray paint color and love it after having tried 8 other sample choices. I still love the mantel but it is a work in progress. Probably going to tile inner perimeter and either paint black and put candles in front or do a mirror? Thoughts? I found the mantel on Craigslist for $100.00, a total steal since others I liked where $500.00 plus. I loved the comment about teal accents. Had gotten so stuck on yellow and gray. Still can't figure out curtains so made a mini-window seat for now. Stuck on yellow accent chair....bought for $5.00, do I get another one and reupholster those. I am embracing the retro couch. It is quite the conversation piece. Thoughts on chair? Too much retro? Upholster it more modern and paint wood?

I like the blue rug with the green couch. I would paint the walls a light to medium blue/gray ( depending on your preference for intensity). I would go bold and paint the frame of the couch white. It would blend with white in rug. You could go neutral with curtains. Maybe a white linen. Good luck
