You need to figure out what your focal point will be; traditional keeping rooms have a fireplace that would normally be the focal point. If you are going to have a television in there, purchase a large armoire and make that the focal point. Angle it in the corner to avoid blocking the view. IF you want the view out the window to be your focal point, face your chairs towdard the window. Make a conversation area with two smaller chairs or a small sofa facing the ones you already have.

The existing dining room table is small and could could serve as a credenza pushed up against the window between the two upholstered chairs. Use it for your orchids and other decorative items.

Hi cegardner, you don't need to figure out your focal point - the kitchen is the focal point. Everything you do needs to compliment the heaviness of the kitchen in proportion and scale. Your tones and colours need to compliment and repeat what is going on in the kitchen. Take the soft butter cream yellow from the tile backsplash and the gray tones of the wall colour and repeat that in your furnishings and drapery in your keeping room. Make sure that the proportions compliment the kitchen cabinetry, or it will feel lop-sided. A couple photos for inspiration for you, one is more modern than the other, but has gray tones to it. I love those layouts. Still, the sofas and chairs are facing the big bank of windows, so they are your focal point.

Not sure of your desires for function in the space, but if you want there to be an eating space in there, would the dining table and two chairs fit to the right? Pushing the table up against the wall?
Then the left side could be another area for TV and cozy chairs. You could still see the TV while eating at the table if you put an armoire angled in the left corner.

I would prefer a small round café table and two upholstered chairs to make a little dining nook, but you have to start somewhere.

What a lovely room! I love the windows! I agree with the last post - no need for a focal point. It's the kitchen work area or backyard that will be the focus. Because you do need to dine in the room, I think your dining table and chairs will look nice but I would probably just bring the table/chairs in and not the rug. It's a little small in scale for the room/table. The chairs are very nice, so I think you just need to add an ottoman to share (maybe round), a table between the chairs, lamp(s) and some accessories for the tables. I think I might change the direction on the chairs to face toward the yard in the summer and kitchen in the winter provided you have seasons and there is room to do so. Although the counters do not have a overhang, I might consider a few stools to add seating for guests.

Thank you for your suggestions. I do want to use part of the space for eating, and I should have mentioned that. The backyard (which you can't see because I took the shots at night) is really pretty and I want to make sure that it is a big part of the space.

I'm glad that one of you mentioned balancing the weight of the kitchen with appropriately scaled furniture. Having moved from a smaller house, most of my pieces are on a smaller scale. As much as I'd love to replace them all...the pocketbook won't allow it. I'm hoping to make use of the table and then get a bigger one for my now larger dining room.

I guess what I meant by focal point was where to place the chairs and such in the keeping room. What will they face. My terminology was wrong, I guess.

Just a comment on photo #3. I love your area: the table, chairs, rug, wall tone and pottery look beautiful together!

Keep the 2 uphols.(facing as they are, angled towd kitchen) chairs ( and add as suggested above a table with lamp, ottaman), also NEED a spot of color...pillows, patterned rug(just in seating area)...would suggest BRITE YELLOW as it would look great with the grey. Would you enjoy a 'pub' table? (chairs-with backs, also arms possibly best to swivel ) place i the corner where you have the card table, the height would give you some 'heft' and a fun full view of backyard
