Chris, a huge room doesn't mean you can just collect more little stuff. See if you can get her to sell everything on Craigslist and buy one enormous thing. Like Rodin's The Kiss, or one of duBuffet's outdoor sculptures. She can install it in the center of the room and the grandkids can play on it.

No they don't look bare. You are use to seeing too much stuff. This looks serene and uncluttered.

Chris, are you saying your mom is not a minimalist? BTW, who dusts all that stuff? If she has a cleaning lady, all hope is lost. If she's dusting it herself, we've still got a chance...

I agree too much stuff! Leave it boxed up for a month and see if you really miss it, pretty much guarantee you won't. The wallpaper dates it, some fresh current paint color would really change the room for very little $

Is it possible for the couch to go on the wall, under that piece of art? And then the chairs go where the couch was? Try to not have a big piece of furniture in the area opening to the other room.
