Thanks for your interest. Any suggestions for exterior materials to front dormer and rear boarding at back entry. Like a more crisp modern look at entry to an otherwise muted slate coloured facade.

Could you swing a copper roof material. it would age nicely. the front dormer could use a window or a kick ass light in keeping with the design of the house.

Wow copper - nice idea! I've been getting "builders block" and this idea is good. Perhaps a copper facia on both. Last night my Kids thought moose antlers in the dormer would be cool! Seems the wife is less enamoured...how would your skin a larger surface in copper like the dormer peak?

Hi Roger - Nice place --- have you looked at Hardi board panels ? What I realy like for a more modern look is the corrigated galvinized metal panels.I think the silver will look good with the slate color of the board and batten . For a little more rustic look I love the horizontal natural cedar boards or the cedar shakes. Then a bright color on your door . Are the support posts for the front porch roof staying that size or are you putting on bigger posts ? For the roof - copper sounds nice but very exspencive but I like metal roofs - their forever and worth the cost.

Hi Roger. Nice cottage! I would do the peaks in cedar shakes - they fade to a nice silvery grey that would look great with your slate board and batten. For the entry, what about stacked ledgerock in a lighter grey? That would give it the clean lines you want while at the same time adding some organic elements that mimic the Canadian Shield. Have a great summer!

Thanks for comments. I do like the organic touch and natural cedar. But am holding off for an edgy/techno idea. Sort of like a Devo song in the middle of a who set just to get the people on their feet!

Some type of stacked ledger stone pillars for your dormer support. Natural cedar planking for the dormer siding. A couple of big decorative lights with a natural style. Flagstone pathway leading to the door will quite welcoming to you and your guests.

You dont have to invest in copper-a copper colored metal roof looks just as great!

Hey that's pretty cool. Hadn't seen that product. Roofs on now but could use in the peak. I will shop this out. The large lights is also pretty key . The Kenora Clearwater Bay area has beautiful flat granite to use for the approach.

The posts are builder temporary posts. Thinking big posts. Would like them to be dramatic as I have avoided any statement with the exterior, leaving that to only the dormer and back entry inset wall and side board.
Open to all suggestions.

Hi Roger, Mixing in the some stone would give a nice balance to your home. In the entry way, how about a stacked stone, perhaps in a mixed color, applied vertically. By applying it vertically, you not only make it contemporary, but you also will acheive an illusion of height. I like the shake for the dormer sides because it not only fades to a beautiful color, it is durable and will honor your homes design. For the pillars, I would sugest a large redwood or Cedar post with stacked stone about a third of the way up from the bottom. Copper flashing on the dormers would be great. All these different materials would present a cohesive look while giving the eye the pleasure of textures. All of these are just some ideas of mine. I included a picture of the mixed stone for you to look at.

Thanks for taking the time to consider. Do stones and or cedar attracks bugs and spiders - drawing those problems to entry door on north side? I like the 3/4 column idea with strong yet hidden post.

In response to your question, cedar is a natural repellant to insects. In the animal kingdom it is often used to line nests just for that reason. Stone on the other hand can provide homes for many of our multi-legged neighbors.
Another idea for the dormer; You could carry the board and batten theme with a twist. You could arrange the battens in a sunburst pattern. They could radiate out from a copper clad half circle. The battens could also be copper clad with the "boards" holding the slate color. It would flow with the nature of your home and give a little pop.

Keep it simple. Go with a shade that is darker than your roof, but keep in the same tones. While you want the different textures and features, you don't want to make it too busy. Between the color of your siding, roof, and slate, you have some nice contrasts. You have talked about adding some copper also, you don't want your house to appear as if you couldn't decide on what kind of house you wanted. All my opinion, of course, but keeping it simple is usually a way to go. Hope that helps.

Hi Roger -- If your looking for an accent color have a look at Ben Moore paints -- Rusty Nail CC - 390 I think it would look great with the slate color siding.

Quite a nice match to the dark colour. The third match - a grey white would be a good accent for bench or flower pot. Thanks for your time
