Help Layering a Neutral Oasis

I desire a neutral room....color is just not my thing. So far, curtains, bed, chairs, and paint stay. Im looking for help layering this room with accessories, rugs, new nightstands, bedding, mirrors, etc. Please, please help! The starburst is not staying in that spot. No dresser required in this space.

My eye craves textured fabrics in the same colour tones as what you have here. Chenille, brockade, shag rug - something/anything that gives the eye a bit of interest. Most spaces have a colour that does that...but your space is neutral. Some shinier fabrics will work...but a strong texture in these colours will make all the difference to your space.

You might want a wall hanging where the sun burst sits. Perhaps a form of rattan or raw linen weave. A small splash of "burnt umber" would work very well without adding "colour" to the room.

I am craving neutrals, too. If I could I would kick out everything except for my art and bring in all neutrals. There are some good sources for things that are not too outrageous. West Elm is a good one and also ZGallerie. ZGallerie has good pillows. Their covers come with the fillers and in either down or poly fill. West Elm has good ones, too. Linens and such. I would do a duvet cover and shams in a neutral tone but with texture and get some jazzy accent pillows for your room. Could you hang the sunburst above your bed? Think of textures and add different ones from velvet to silk to brocade and wool.

In the photo with the brown chair it appears you have started. If you have room you could do some interesting nightstands and some very cool lamps. I can see adding 3 black and white prints or photos in black frames between your windows. Something that interests you.

    Thank you both. ;-)
I am familiar with and am a BIG fan of texture, but I guess I am need a more specific "jump start". For example, item Y from store Z. I went with the curtains and the grey/taupe chair to get started....

When I look at the photo of the windows with the paint, sunburst,drapes- Because the color tones are all the same it tends to blend in as one. Something to separate the windows and set apart the sunburst as a main focal point.. Would you consider painting the sunburst YELLOW to accent the SUN. The earth tones are very nice but you need to blend with accenting colors to give your room a more dramatic look.

Hi! I love that you are a neutral lover! So am I! Here is a bedding choice that I think would look great:

Try gargoyle or natural power shag carpet from Mitchell Gold. And a taupe or gray matelasse bedding for texture and definition.

There are lighter, creamier shades of all of the papers above. These are some I am using in my son't penthouse when we remodel. He likes neutrals, too. Phillip Jefferies will send you samples...very accomodating. For rugs and the like there is West Elm. I have found their quality to be quite good for the price point. My daughter just bought a rug from WE and it is wonderful. Big and not too $ for the size and quality.

The chair looks gray / blue on my monitor and seemed lonely :)
But easy to go monochromatic too

dclost boy, the chair was blue/gray in the photo on the right and then it looked like it was re-covered to brown? I do think that grays and camel and other neutrals can work together.

I love Joss and Main for accessories and small furniture items. Just check their site every couple of days as their sales last 3 days. If you miss something you want, keep checking - it will come back in a couple of weeks :)

The chairs are gray...almost taupe. But absolutely not brown. ;-)
Here is the color against my brown wood floors.

How about a collection of cushions that gently introduce color, and a throw in one of the colors of the cushions . A little like below (these throws are from the 'Everyday Luxury' collection: http://mohairsandmore.com/100-everyday-luxury-mohair-throw-blankets ).

Okay, so now seeing the chair it is taupe/greige. Actually a good color to work with now. There are many good accent pillows out there and they can be neutral but have texture so that it is a nice change for the eye but still neutral. This rug has gray in it as well as tan and is a wonderful rug. My daughter's house is not finished being built.

Your chair would bring out the grays in the rug. It's from West Elm.

Thank you! What particular rug is that from WE?
It is the Bello Shag rug in an 8x10. Seems good quality for $. She also liked the "Minnie Pebble Wool Jute Rug." It is sold out in 8x10 ft. The Bello rug isn't as deep shaggy as others I have seen. Not like the old 70's shag rugs. :-)

I've check that out and they say it sheds. :-(

Oh no! The other one she wanted was the minnie pebble wool jute rug. It is out of stock in an 8x10. We have a local West Elm store so we can look. I will tell you a great source for pillows is ZGallerie. They are not that $ for the quality and you get a good feather and down filler included. They are also large pillows, not small 16x16 or something. Most are 24x24 or 22x22. Right now they have some nice neutrals.

What about these pillows? Gonna grab another of the one on the right.
    Thoughts?

I like those. What about a tad darker duvet cover and shams? It would look elegant. The pillows are good. Neutrals are good! :-)
How about this color? I would have to order a larger size of course.
I thought about grounding the space with a dark black/brown for depth. The artwork is where the tv would go....and maybe move the artwork to another space?

I like your ideas. The Hotel line of bedding from Macy's is chic and has some interest but you can get it in good neutral colors. I prefer to keep it simple now and use 2 std shams and maybe one or two accent pillows on the bed.No Euro pillows. Macy's often has good sales on their "Hotel" bedding. It's just one thought. There is plenty of nice bedding out there now.
I like your pillows and could see doing 3 in your case. 2 of the Ikat pattern and the one quilted one in the middle & then plain duvet and shams just in a taupe or griege or even brown? Whatever you like. You are on the right path.
Just a thought but could you go gray with the duvet and shams to tie in the chair? My monitor reads that your walls and drapes are more tans/browns but now I see that your chair is gray. It is okay to blend all together. I actually like gray with camel. There is a nice rug out there that looks like an iconic Hadley pattern that is camel and gray. I believe it is a flat weave so no shedding.
I'm not familiar with the rug that you mentioned. Do you have a pic? I hadn't thought about adding camel! I do like the IKAT pillows. The headboard has little texture so I think I need something additional behind those IKATs? My phone camera is actually horrible, but I'm like the idea of a textured dark brown/black. I was thinking a lighter gray duvet?

sorry. Not Hadley, but I think Hicks? I'm old and losing it! It's on ZGallerie and is camel and gray and geo patterned. My daughter is going for your look, too. The models of the home they are having built are all done in neutrals and are the best decorated models I have seen in a long time. Very chic and understated. Makes me want to move!
