I don't think texurizing would give you what you want. These stone veneers are coming down in price and are super simple to install. I'm a 54 yr old woman an I did slate stackstone look on three half walls in my lower level using (grab-it) construction super adhesive and a cheap tile saw. Two days later it was done! I spent about $11 sqft without the adhesive.

There is a drywall product made, Google "textured wall panels".

They have something similar to this at Lowe's but it is really small panels and would take several to do a fireplace
