If your stair treads and hand-rail are oak, you can have a contractor sand them down (messy and time consuming though it may be) and stain them darker to match your choice of flooring as best as possible. Keep in mind different species of wood take stain differently so it won't be exact.

Perhaps if you do just an inset border in oak, it will transition your new floor to the stairs. I'm not sure where you are headed when you descend the stairs, but if it's a traffic path, you could save money on bordering the entire space, and just create an inset "runner" with some interesting marquetry incorporating oak and darker colors, from the bottom of the stairs to whatever is across from them, and do everything else in your rich and handsome mocha. Beautiful home, by the way! Hope that's all that's damaged!

I have noticed in some of the photos they have painted the rails and sides (treads black) What do you think?

Not sure on mixing in black unless you have a lot of it within eyeshot, but you could take a sample of your flooring to the paint store and have them scan it for an exact color match for your iron spindles -- that would tie the stairs to the new mocha. While it would look nice on its own in black, I'm just afraid that black in your case would look like you tried to match and missed.

I have a similar issue, as I love fine buttery-feeling wood grains and have a personal aversion to oak and its clumsy, chunky grain. I have mahogany floors, and when I built 12 years ago, I told my builder re the stair rail to go with any fine grain hard wood and stain it dark, and specifically told him, "Anything but oak." Well, an inspector was coming and he threw in what he had, you guessed it...with arthritis and a bad back, I use that darn rough grained railing every day, and still say to myself, "...anything but oak."

I am currently in the process of remodeling my light oak staircases. We had them sanded down and restained a super dark espresso and it looks amazing!! So much prettier than I could have hoped!!

Your living area is very very nice. I think the new wood should match the old wood and stairs unless you can have the stairs sanded and stained. I've seen many photos of painted stairs, but in your LR's case, I think it would look like a patch paint job to hide the fact that the new wood is not the same as the old wood.
