What is supporting the floating marble shelf in the cubby? Just the wall tiles below it?

it may be a premade niche, with the marble facing it.
http://www.finpan.com/products/preformed-products/preformed-niches/ like some of these.

if it's not, then yes, the tile below is what's supporting the shelf. something that small would be secured with a good mortar, so it wouldn't be unstable.
