You are going to need larger scaled side tables with a height to the arm of the chairs to balance out that much sofa. I suggest three large art pieces on the wall behind the sectional and move the enitre unit toward the fireplace and no quite so close to the doorway. You will need a large lamp also. The existing rug is feeling too small for that space so maybe add a woven sisal rug under it like you typically see at Pottery Barn. A 36' round coffee table would work well for ease of getting around it. I suggest two additional chairs in a lighter color with the existing end table between them to make the space not just dedicated to tv viewing. That way people can have a conversation.This is a big room with a big sectional so keep your scale large so your proportions feel right. Look at this room below as it is a very large brown sectional but all the texture and side chairs keep it from taking over the space.

Thank you for replying to my request. I was thinking about this chair. When you say 2 chairs, do mean to put them against the wall that has the cubes against it (it is 89" wide)? Or next to the fireplace? I am thinking some large red based art above the sectional.

You have enough room to float them closer to the sofa closer to the fireplace. What about hanging something like two of these horizontally above the sofa.

The sofa and rug are very masculine, so like Lisa said, add 2 chairs in a lighter tone and the sisal rug is brilliant. i think adding a console table under the clock and one at the back of the sofa so the view from the kitchen isn't the back of the sectional. some plants flanking the fireplace would soften the room. Definitly need bigger side tables and lamps. A large art piece with maybe a pop of red, or mulitple smaller pictures. Phillipe Sainte-Laudy has great selections.

The first thing that came to mind was one of those coffee tables that looks like a wheeled loading cart, low-tech and sort of industrial, but with a bit more "polish" in a lighter wood.

You want a rug that is big enough for all the seating to have its front legs on it. 10' square? 9 x 12. Big. The chairs recommended above should "float" closer to the sofa. With a room this big, you have no reason to shove any seating against the wall. Rule of thumb: seating should be close enough to hand someone a glass to the person seated next to you. You can fudge on that a little.

That little rodiron end table has inadequate "mass" to compete with that massive amount of brown leather.

If you like the animal skin rug: place it on the larger sisal. I saw this recently and it was wonderful and gave the sisal pizzaz.

You have a huge wall to fill. I did mine with a collection of mirrors. Don't know if that is your thing or not but you could do a collection of anything you like.

Put a console table under that clock and get rid of the clock. Think about a venetian mirron and maybe two tall lamps or one bold lamp and then decorate with accessories.

I think the overall look is geeting too dark so may want to consider accents that brighten the space up. Maybe you can find 3 candlesticks for the fire place and a nice basket (Pottery Barn sometimes has them) that you can fill with firewood.

You need a totally different end table next to the sofa or a fierce standing lamp. That wall behind the sofa would also look good with a tryptic or three panel piece of artwork.

You may want to do something else with the animal skin and instead go for a large area rug and some pillows to soften the sofa.

The chairs a really nice, and probably your pick, not hubby's but ... they are too delicate. I think you call this space what it is now: the TV/hanging out space and make peace with it. Move the couch in closer and add a coffee table with some heft (several good ideas above). That's the TV/hanging area. Maybe add one more chunky chair ... If it's going to end up filling in the "open" corner of the sectional, a fabric chair that rocks and swivels (they make them look upscale now) will certainly be equal in scale and comfort to the couch. That can be "mom's chair", since Dad got the couch he wanted. There might be room behind the couch (directly across from TV/Fireplace) for a good sized library table/desk area. Put your 2 lamps on either end of that table/desk. Sitting at the desk would give you a great view of the house/TV and allow you to be involved while doing other work while your people are "hanging." For accessories, add some fabric ... lots of pillows and throws to warm up the leather ... looks like earthy reds, ambers, greens would go with your wall colors and kitchen cabinets. Since everything is visually open, the kitchen accessories/table linens should be treated similarly. That one long wall where the couch is would be a great place to put photos you have transferred to canvas. (multiple web sites) pick a theme (kids, portraits, nature, etc) and get 3 big ones. If you frame them, keep the frames the same. The wall where the clock is could use either a skinny long table and mirror or a storage hutch or baker's rack. I think the animal rug looks odd right now, but when you add some color and layers (do the sisal thing with the animal on top) it will look cool and be a definite style maker. There's no ambiguity there: It's rugged and outdoorsy. Your house is great and I hope you enjoy it!!

These are really good suggestions that have been posted. Most of them basically achieve a couple of goals -- to soften the room and to take the eye away from the sofa, which now dominates the room. I like the idea of a large softer, less masculine rug. Look at this photo to see how a simple rug can really lighten up and soften a room:



If you like the animal rug, maybe it could sit on top of the new rug and be shifted closer, maybe even partially under, the sofa, with a coffee table sitting on it. Here is a photo of an animal rug on top of another rug:



Other suggested elements to soften the room include the use of fabric in throw pillows, throws, etc. These, along with an eye-popping large piece of artwork above the sofa, would add needed color as well. The large artwork would also draw the eye up and away from the sofa, and a desk/sofa table would help hide the back of the sofa. Don't know if it would fit, but this one is simple and attractive:

How awesome to get so much feedback on your home. It seems you are getting lots of info on the furniture so I thought I would add some inspiration on the art. I read in the first post your were thinking of some red... I will post two square canvases that look great sitting beside each other that are 36X36 inches each. However I feel a massive framed map might look even cooler. Have you been inside of restoration hardware recently? i have to agree that the chairs are too small scale for that sofa. What about something more substantial like these english-rolled arm chairs. i am hesitant about the industrial cart coffee table idea as it may become too trendy. They look a bit better in very modern spaces. A sizable round table would work since no ones knees would get knocked when getting out of the sectional.

Hmmm. I like Lisa Lucas' suggestion on the chair(s), as well as the thought about the coffee table. I also wonder if an industrial design table just adds to the already masculine flavor of the room.

Hi codysmom! I like your style! Eclectic/rustic/modern! The link below is a rustic/modern furniture store where I think you will find a large statement piece (coffee table) or end pieces that will fit in nicely. Also, enclosing pics. One is of a cream shag rug. I think if you went this route, it would keep the space light and cozy given the large, dark couch The other pics are for inspiration for you. I love everyone's idea of putting the console table at the empty wall. I would put a lovely modern table, but then put a large mirror with rustic framing on the wall. Flank the table with lamps that "speak to your style" for warmth and add a few decor items, including a family photo in a super cool frame. Yes with the large picture above the couch! I would find something with the red color you desire that again, has a rustic, but modern feel. You might consider flanking that picture with a sconces or use an uplight to add interest. I hope what I've found for you helps! It's going to look fantastic!!

BTW - you ARE a wonderful wife to have compromised on the large leather couch! You tell him he is a lucky man hah! ;-)

By the way, your chair choice is beautiful, but they are just too small for the area. I think you need 2 armed taupe/neutral but not cream chairs to create that sitting area on the other side of the couch. I think that touch of feminine that you were on to is good. Use that idea in some throw pillows on the chairs and couch, with some solid ones that pop a color of choice.

One more idea - with the wall above the couch being so large, you can create 2 separate interest areas. One above the couch. Then one to the left of the couch as this can be a whole separate area of interest because it will be separated by an end table/lamp. I would suggest 4 pictures - 2 pics on top of 2 pics. I hope that makes sense. Let me know if I did not explain that well :-)

Not sure how big your cow hide is but for something fun you could hang it on the big wall and put a big mirror over it. I like the sisal idea - bigger end tables and lamps and definitely need to bring the sofa in to make room more cozy. Consider a console behind sofa. Real greenery here and there and some candles.

I like the earlier idea of the shag rug, which would add softness to the room -- and feel good on the feet!
