Carpet has lost its popularity in the US. Hardwood flooring seems to be the top choice, with tile being the flooring of choice in bathrooms, though we're seeing a lot of hardwood in powder rooms.

I would never put carpet in a bathroom or kitchen . I do like carpet in the bedroom and the living area as well.

Never in a kitchen or bathroom . I love the ease of cleaning of non carpeted areas I like area rugs for sound absorption and color, I often have a couple of different ones for a room so I can change them once in a while or take them out completely, but not in areas with food or water involved.

I can't bear carpet in a bathroom, kitchen or dining room - though I love a beautiful area rug in a dining room.

Only time I have seen/had a lie down on bathroom carpet was in a big old English manor a cousin was living in. The bathroom was cavernous so the warmth the carpet brought was great. Used elsewhere, all I would be able to think about would be the risk of mould.

I suppose bathroom carpet can be great in the morning, you don't have to step on cold tiles, but I think I prefer underfloor heating anyway.

I think white cotton small area rugs that are replaced and washed daily are nice when drying off. But not full carpeting due to cleaning.

I prefer hardwood except for the dustballs that gather in the corners! (Although of course then I realise that carpets must in reality be filthy!)

Building a new house now and using hardwood on the main floor but mostly carpet upstairs in the bedrooms (will have tile in all bathrooms). I love hardwood, but I hate noise (specifically the tapping of my dogs nails on the bedroom floor when he decides to get up at 3am) I know it will need to be replaced periodically, but thats fine since it's much more affordable than hardwood.

Smaller rugs are great for the bathroom. There definitely is that ew-factor to avoid with a carpeted bathroom

Not in the bathroom. None of those fuzzy toilet seat covers either. No kitchens either. Hardwoods and tile a great but not forgiving in breakage either glasses or heads. I have slipped big time on a wet spot. And may have to go carpet in my later years.

We would never suggest carpet in a bathroom or kitchen. However, carpet in a bedroom, living space or media room is nice depending on the space and lifestyle of the family that lives there.

Lived in a house in the uk that had carpet in the kitchen. NEVER AGAIN. So hard to keep clean.

@Emmaline. ..just to assure you that whoever mentioned fuzzy toilet seats mistated this. No, they are not actually put on the SEAT. These are not so popular, I don't think, as they were 30 years ago but what they are is a matching rug toilet LID cover. I remember there used to be tank covers but my memory is vague on that. The tank thing might have been the tank LID also. In old days, bathroom sets had the bath mat, the mat with a cut out to allow it to fit around the toilet on the floor, the seat LID cover. They got picked up and washed regularly with the bath mat. I'm not sure if that wasn't better than stepping in male drippings. Better? Worse? We had no males in our household so it was nice to keep feet warm up in winter. My mom was a really good housekeeper so...anyway that was a looong time ago and it was the lid, not the seat itself. I could see how that would be so wrong on every level.

I have carpet in my living room, bedrooms and the hallway. There's tile from 1959 in the entryway, tile in the hall bath, linoleum in the master bath, and laminate in the kitchen and dining room. As soon as I can convince my husband to tear out the carpet, we'll be refinishing the hardwood floors underneath.

I do like the warmth of the carpet, but it feels dirty all the time.

@bsellers1394 Thanks for clarifying! I'm all for being warm, but there's a limit to what I can accept as unhygienic :)

We have area rug in bathroom so no cold floors in winter time (would like to eliminate area rugs though and add radiant floor heating though) . In hallway, we have area rugs protecting the hardwood floors.

When we had 3 dogs floorboards were definitely easier to look after, carpets needed cleaning and replacing regularly. However, down to one small dog now and love the cosiness of a carpet in the living room and bedroom. The two other bedrooms just have luxurious rugs. Definitely no carpet in the bathrooms.

Carpet is essential for peaceful co-existence with neighbours if you live in a house conversion. It sounds like tap dancing or running the Grand National if they have hard floors above, and next door echoes through the wall like Victoria station....mind you, I sing, so they have a lot to put up with too...

I prefer carpet because it's warmer and cosier. I wouldn't want it in my kitchen or bathroom though. We are about to put hard flooring down in our hallway, but with a rug for warmth and comfort.
