Your furniture matches the rug. Get something more complementary rather than matchy matchy. Front legs of both pieces go on the rug, back legs do not. That will help you determine the proper size to buy.

A horizontal landscape over the couch could open up the space bringing a feeling of natural light and breeze to the space. The natural light in a daylight landscape can create the spark and glimmer you are looking for without glitz.

Go for a painting instead of a photograph or print because a photo or print needs glazing - i.e. the glass across the face of frame. Because the TV is directly opposite the framed picture there would always be a harsh reflection in the glass from the TV that will obscure the artwork image.

If you go with an abstract painting look for something that has a white or cream background with the abstract gesture reaching from left to right. It will bring both movement and light to the room.

I concur with the others, try adding a few colorful accent pieces but keep it close to the same saturation as as your main colors. If you want to keep monotone colors, add natural textures or even mirrored pieces which would look amazing in this space! Try looking for mirrored artwork, lamps, vases etc for a classy yet bolder feel.

I love your soft color palette. It's very serene. It looks like the mantle could use a touch of that.

Looks like a nice room with so many neutral colors to really give you a lot of latitude. I would suggest finding something you really love to hang behind the couch, and then change out the the throw pillows for a color that compliments it. Maybe the lampshade, too. The pillows (and maybe a throw?) can be done inexpensively so I would focus first on finding the room's "star" as the artwork and then you can take some risks and play around with it. Seems like a fun project!

Look at this room for some inspiration...I would ditch the fuchsia (in those pillows, anyway), ...I love your room, it's classic and beautiful. I agree that some art could add a dash of color. Contrast could be added with frames/coffee table, etc.

I love the monochromatic bones of the room. Decide what your inspiration color you want and pick art based on this color. I would also frame it in a dark frame to balance out the dark furniture opposite of the room. Based on the existing pillows I will assume the accent inspiration color is pink. so here is a few gorgeous items to add.
Also adding a chandelier or sconces would be amazing.

Add a large painting with the background color in your neutral, that is then filled with a multitude of vibrant colors, I'm thinking field of wild flowers. Then pick three colors that you love from that painting to use as a palette for your throw pillows. And one throw blanket for the love seat. I would do that and then decide if you want a coffee table in that room, less is more. Photos of the other side would be helpful as well.

Kirklands if you have one near have nicely framed large paintings.

I feel the room is bland and lacks color. You need not go over board. Any one or all of the below mentioned suggestions should work.

1. Something like a nice colorful art piece should add the spark.





2. You can even consider contrasting cushions.






3. Just changing the rug to a brighter tone might work.

I love the Tim Lam abstract painting posted by Shandrika's Decorating and Design - something like that would add some color and interest. I'd pick the art first in a horizontal frame to go over the sofa and get something you really love that you would want to live with - then use that as the basis to pick other accessories that pick up the color from the art - get throw pillows, decor in those color/s - I love the idea of adding a contemporary/rustic look coffee table, I like the ones posted above, but again, I think the best idea is always to find something that you love because you're the one who will be living with it - monochromatic looks can be great

It would help to see the other side(s) of the room... What you have is restful (except for the bright pillows). I think I would continue with that, adding texture and sparkle. A metallic coffee table would be great. I'd also play with the existing rug a bit -- it needs sofa feet on it, so maybe rotate the rug, or bring the sofa forward a foot or so. You could add a narrow console behind the sofa, upon which you could stack books, lighting, etc.

Agree on getting a new rug...an interesting pattern with some color could really brighten up the space. Add a few complimentary throw pillow on the couch and you have a fresh look for little effort.

You just need a little art and some color and texture/pattern pops in accessories such as throws, pillows, decor! Maybe a glass coffee table, or a wooden one to compliment the mantle.

Also I think I would prob have gone for a purply-pink colour artwork but I realise that it is better to use a contrasting colour from some of the comments! I think aqua with pink and my neutrals will work best?? I only want a little splash of colour though as want to maintain more serene feel!

Coffee table would be great but my little kids just love the space ton the rug to play on!

After I pick the artwork I will look for throws and maybe some different pillows.

Such an easy fix. Bring pops of color in the toss cushions, throws, accessories. So inexpensive to change up when you tire of the color scheme. Any color you incorporate into what is already in the room is going to work, whether you use the cool colors, (greens, blues) or go with the warmer palette like reds, oranges, etc. If you have a local Hobby Lobby, their selection is huge and everything is organized by color.

Consider placing the smaller sofa in front of the window and rad so you can center the larger one with the FP before hanging the art. Remember to hang it 5" above the sofa back. While you're moving the sofas, you can adjust the rug so their front feet are on it.
