You have a solid wood floor, solid cabinets and the existing cabinets look solid too. I would use the black but not as the background. A combination of colors will make it more interesting and give it some depth. I have attached a picture of a Cambria brand counter top to see if it would be something you might like.

Cambria is easier to take care of and the only way you can tell the difference between granite and Cambria is to run your fingers under the lip of the overhang.

I think that with the amount of mid-toned wood in your kitchen (i.e. both floors and cabinets) that you need the same kind of high contrast you are currently getting with the black. So I would either go with black (or other very dark color) again or a bright striking white of some kind--either in granite or engineered quartz. But I'd definitely avoid the mid-tones as they will simply disappear into your cabinets' tone.

I love the black personally. You may just decide to lighten up or provide more contrast through paint and accessories. I hate beige or brown overload too -- and love black, white, cream, gray, and wood tones. Greenery, white decorative dishes, antique white walls with colorful paintings or art or accessories would probably be more my style...although I love your current wall color. It just feels dark with the amount of cabinets and dark countertop you have :)

I would use a backsplash of lighter color and change the paint. I like the black counter tops with these cabinets.

Just a point about the Cambria vs granite. Last year we put the Cambria in our basement bar which is rather large and it scratches . We used the granite in our upstairs master bath and it hasn't and it is prettier.

Any hard surface can be scratched give the right cirumstances, less likely in a bathroom than a kitchen. Granite is a softer hard surface than Cambria.

Seek out an expert on the different materials and weigh the pros and cons as well as colors.

Contrast is good. Your kitchen is very, very nice. Adding texture, color and design will make it more interesting whether light or dark.

Cambria:

For contrast, Colonial Cream or Venetian Gold Light. To pick up the black, Delicattus Dark or Solaris.

You might try brown family of natural granite, like St. Cecelia, New Venetian Gold, Giallo Ornamental, Giallo Napoleano All of them have a certain degree of black, I would go for the one with most black.
Or you may want to play with burgundy shades, like Tan Brown or variations of Bordeaux (Sienna Bordeaux etc)
Or may also try to break the browns a bit with relaxed gray patterns of natural granite, like Exodus White or River White
Or you might go ahead and get cabinet doors stained:) I thought of that because for me the cabinets and the floor are too matchy, but thats very versonal:)
