I agree, we have laminate floor and it's a like an ice rink for our poor dog!! I find putting large rugs down quite good, I have a steam cleaner so clean them all the time. Have you thought about tiling the floors? Maybe that wouldn't be so slippy?

Any floor other than carpet is going to be slippery for your dogs so buy some runners and other small area rugs to put down on the main walkways. We had to do that a few years ago when one of our dogs became disabled.

My house has laminate floor, carpet, tile, and original hardwood. My dog is also older and has trouble with his back legs, and the laminate is BY FAR the worst flooring for him. Luckily it's only in one room that he ever goes into, so we just have lots of throw rugs with good grippy backing in there. The hardwood he originally needed rugs on but now seems to manage okay, and the carpet is fine. The tile is worse than the hardwood but not as bad as the laminate - the room with tile has a door in from outside and he needs a rug just at the entrance (I think it's slippery when his paws are wet and he's transitioning from inside to out?) but he can otherwise manage. If he was in that room more I might put in another rug, but right now it doesn't seem necessary.

I dunno what it is about the laminate, but that stuff is like ICE for dogs. (The kitchen laminate is not quite as bad as the laminate in the den, and the latter has a shinier surface, so I think that's an element of things, but both types of laminate are still much worse than anything else.) He has similar trouble with the nice shiny looking vinyl floor at the vet. Just can't get his feet under himself on it. (Yes, I now take a rug to the vet.)

Hand scraped hickory holds up well and is easy to touch up . However , it is still hardwood but seems to provide more traction than a finish on sight floor .
