Congratulations on your new house. If the other houses in the area are similar, you could take some photos of the ones you like that have new porches, or use google maps to get photos. See how you like the Craftsman pillars on them. The two big changes (second and fourth photos) are not in proportion to the size of the house, as you surmised.

Easy changes are to remove shrubs in front of the porch (transplant them elsewhere), paint the front door, and add shutters correctly proportioned to the window size.

I love the second picture you posted, the georgian style. I would remove the bushes and add a nice flower bed with lots of bright flowers. It'll open up the front of the home and if it's in budget redo the concrete walkway with a nice acid wash. Your home is def a gem but I would first invest in getting your foundation jacked up. Unless it's just the pictures that makes your home look slanted? If you house is indeed slanted, in the long run without having your foundation jacked up, it can get very costly as this will sacrifice the safety and structure of your home.

Foundation is definitely solid. Picture orientation is my own fault - I actually just took one halfheartedly out of the car window before I seriously thought I'd get the house!

I'm hesitant to remove the shrubs. They're all azaleas (and what says Georgian more than that right? haha). I could maybe remove the front two and replace with smaller accents?

I've noticed that contrasting doors are somewhat in vogue right now. In this case maybe a red door? Would that be advisable? And, of course, I'd like to do natural wood if the Craftsman pillars work out.

Azaleas can be transplanted at the right time of year. Maybe live with them for a year where they are, then decide where to put them.

Hi Barrett -- Small needn't be humble. I love all of nwduck's suggestions -- but I also love your first idea of the grand Georgian entry. Congrats on your already charming new home!

How about enclosing the porch and making it an entry with windows and door.
This could help your energy bills and make it so people don't land right in your front room, then they can take off boots and coats.

Hi Barrett, I really like the proportions of porch to house as it is so I wouldn't change it. It's funny, sometimes photos suggest things or bring to our attention, things which aren't readily apparent. I say this because your photo (aside from the skew) really marries house to landscape. The deep tones of browns from the tree trunks, roof, and the shadows of the porch are very appealing. I doubt the house wall under the porch roof is brown, but the photo suggests that you might paint it brown and it would be stunning. NWDUCK has some good suggestions too. I'd forget the major renovation you are contemplating and tend to the hardscaping materials of the walk, steps and porch floor. Flagstone and dark rich woods would be wonderful.

Prefer the porch you have to the three choices. Try new paint on the house, and a bright color on the door that can be seen from the street, perhaps turquoise. Definitely trim back the azaleas after they bloom this year. I would also cover the porch in stone, something to match the roof. Pretty home.

I like the house as it is. I would just replace the shrubs that are directly in front of the porch with something lower, to open up the area, and brighten the front door.
