I would opt for the lighter tile. The dark tile will end up giving you too many visual changes - dark lower cabinets, light granite, dark tile, light upper cabinets. Re the glass door cabinet above the peninsula - one idea is to have your tile installer do a "step" design - angled from the corner of the cabinet to the edge of the peninsula. Hope this helps.
