Hi klcozz, thanks for the question. The fire pit in this photo is natural gas burning. In the case of this project, there is a small "catch basin" underneath the fire pit (several inches down) that collects drainage water, then the water is tight-lined underneath the patio and daylights out over the edge of the hill. On flat sites, we install a fairly substantial dry-well or sump underneath the fire pit that will collect water and slowly disperse it back into the soil. We also recommend keeping the fire pit covered unless it's in use. The height of our raised fire rings ranges from 18" - 22" above grade (standard seat-wall height). We're planning on doing a similar concrete ring fire pit, but for wood burning. We're planning to line it with firebrick, but how do you handle drainage? It will be covered when not in use...
