1960s family room
Comments (27)I wanted to post some updated images from the 1960s ranch that we ended up purchasing. Thank you for the advice. We installed hardwood floors, painted the walls Benjamin Moore Hazy Skies, and knocked out a wall between the living room and family room. At first, the paint was a lot greener than I expected, but it's actually grown on me. The attached pictures are taken at night, when the color reads much greener than in daylight. We've moved in, and our decorating needs have been pushed to the backburner due to spending a lot on renovations (and due to having 3 young children). I'm finally ready to start making some decorating decisions as we have a complete hodge-podge of furniture right now. I have two primary questions: 1) in the living room and dining room what type of curtains would you suggest for the wall of windows? We need privacy at night, so I will need to be able to close the drapes. I was thinking of cream silk drapes (double width on the wide bank of windows in the living room and single width on the smaller dining room windows). Not sure if I should layer with sheers as well? 2) the white couch that is front of the living room window will go. I need some seating there though. I was thinking about two chairs against the window and a backless bench floating in front of them? Not sure if you can tell by the picture, but we knocked out the wall to open the living room to the family room. Any other decorating suggestions (in any room), would be greatly appreciated! Thanks....See MoreLooking for this table

Comments (8)Angle the piano in the corner so the keyboard and the player gets light from the window.. Then center the artwork on that wall. Try the short dark sofa under the window and angle the two light chairs at each end of the blue sofa. Move the table that is now between them to the foyer or under the picture by the door. Your artwork all seems disjointed theme and colorwise. Would try to coordinate the art better....See MoreHelp choosing wood flooring
Comments (6)Thank you all for responding. I looked at a pine floor stained one part provincial and two parts dark walnut and it is really pretty. I wish we were putting in a custom floor so we could stain it ourselves, but it looks like we will most likely be putting in an engineered wood floor. I need to check out some provincial engineered samples now that you mentioned that. I didn't know what provincial was before. We dont personally prefer the orangey red undertone of the current oak, so we are almost positive we will paint all the trim and the column and mantel white. Though we may do some accent color on the mantel for a statement, not sure on that yet. I think the white trim, column, cabinets, etc will give it a bigger more airy feel in the house, right now the eye is just so drawn to all the dark wood. We will be replacing the current granite tile fireplace surround because of the pink in it we are trying to get away from. We won't have any of the current tile left in the house as the wood floors will be 100 percent of the floors in the house, minus the two bathrooms for which we need to pick new tile. I really do like oak in a brown dark oak or medium to darker walnut colored stain. I will pick up some oak samples as well. I would actually prefer just to get a real oak floor instead of engineered, but our foundation is slab, and we are hesitant to add the extra height of putting in a plywood subfloor to nail down to. Plus my contractor said it would be much more expensive. Just FYI, we will be replacing the window treatments do the red toned oak or cherry blinds won't be here anymore either....See MoreCarolyn Albert-Kincl, ASID
