@Coastroad - Thank you! that is a perfect solution to the ill fitted screen issue and I love those modern clean simple tools! I really appreciate the suggestions but realize I should have posted my request in the decor/ accessorize area -I was seeking decorating suggestions. I have never posted here before- sorry. :)

I look at this wall and it just doesn't do anything for the floors nor the couch that i see is modern. I think you should look into a veneer stone in the light tones for a beutiful focal point, not sure what the insert is around the fire box, is that stone? it looks blue... I would look at replacing that with a mosaic to complement the rest of the room.

@Kathy - Thank you! I believe this is a blue gray slate- I love your suggestions. I'm not a huge fan of the slate but I will say this for it, the darker color helps diminish the dirty inner walls of the soot covered fireplace! :) It sort of all blends together making it less of an eyesore. I was actually mistaken in posting here- i meant to post in Decor/Accessories rather than dilemmas

@Jessica - I wouldn't worry about it too much, I didn't even noticed where you had posted : )
I would also suggest (after you have the fireplace cleaned out and the chimney swept) that you spray the inside of the fireplace with hi heat black, being careful not to overspray on your nice stone surround. It makes a huge difference sprucing up a fireplace

@coastroad Thank you! This does make it look so much nicer and I see from this photo that the lighter brick is a fine contrast to the dark black inside- so it works out! thanks for that!

I, too, think the wall looks gorgeous as is, and I wouldn't change the surround. The stone is a nice textural contrast to the wood. Here's what I would do: Move the sofa closer to the window, so that it's centered on the bit of wood wall between the fireplace and window. Between the wood wall and end of sofa, I'd place a square table -- simple, Parson-style, perhaps in dark metal as another contrast to wood and stone (and sofa fabric). Get a table lamp with a textured base (ceramic, handmade look) of some kind -- or if you get a wood end table, a metal lamp base would work. Then I'd get a rug for
the seating area, which will help break up the wood wall into floor, and I'd
put something on the left side of the fireplace. I am imagining a painted cupboard. Then I'd find some things with curves -- a small round ottoman to place near the hearth, pillows with big, round graphic print, a round sun burst mirror over the fireplace -- although not just any one will work. Avoid one that's too delicate looking. Usually these mirrors have a gold finish, but a silver one (a deeper, pewter finish, not shiny chrome) would coordinate well. If you put a real focal point up there, go simple on the mantel. If you want a wooden coffee table, I'd choose a darker wood to tie in the ceiling beams. But I always prefer an upholstered ottoman for comfort. I can't tell what the sofa is upholstered in, but it it's flat cotton duck fabric, look for something with texture.

I know this is more information than you asked for, but I think you've got a good looking space and it can become gorgeous with a few simple additions.

I like all the suggestions posted. Here is one more...the wall of wood is really nice. I wouldn't change it either. It does look a little bare. I like to pair chairs next to a fireplace. I like the idea of sitting in a comfy chair by the fire. I would also hang a piece of art right over the fireplace. I see there is a center trim
piece there, I would hang the art right on top of that. I think it would be fine.
The idea of a custom fire screen is nice too. Here is a couple pics of a chair
by fireplace, different style rooms but it's just for a visual. This fireplace also
has a custom screen.
