I love it when there are constraining design factors. Constraints drive creative thinking. This home exists in a non-conforming location on this property. In order to preserve the location, I had to use the exact same foundation in the front. There was some repair and reinforcing of the foundation. You may notice the existing small gable projection became the open porch entry and the side facing bay was retained in the new design. A garage was cut into the front. In the rear I added about 5 feet in the last remaining conforming land area available. A challenging project to say the least. The greatest architectural creativity springs from respect for the factors that constrain the design. Efabism - http://wjmarchitect.com/econofunctionalaesthetic.htm

WJM, not bad but what's up with that gabled bump out? Next time, consider using trim boards to break up and define planes, watertable, and storeys.

[Edit: thks, for your reply. What I meant is that the bump-out has no historical precedence, as shown, because it appears to hang in air. Simple fix: 1x6 trim boards along all vert. corners (incl. inside corners) and horiz. 1x8s along all bottom courses and top plates. The bump-out would have panels below the windows (instead of clapboard) and scrollworked brackets or tapered skirt (like an oriel) adhering it to the façade.]

sbrustein - There was 234 sf total added to the house, 117 sf on each of the 2 floors. Thank you for your interest in my work!

acroteria - As with many design configuration decisions there is something on the inside that affects the outside. That gabled projection contains a charming window seat in the master bedroom suite. The limited zoning setback at the front (gable) prevented any further projection of this feature. The window seat created a harmonious balance within the space so I took the opportunity to use it to articulate the exterior as well. It did not have to project outward, however the client felt the interior affect was worth it. Thank you for your suggestions!

I love all the little bump outs. It adds drama and interest to the exterior and no doubt the interior as well.
