I see your color paint matches everything. It is a great color. But you do need a contrast.

I think it looks wonderful, especially the black as an accent (or is it deep brown. ) As soon as I looked at it, I thought that the back splash is a place to make a surprise statement. This is how I approach color: look in your closet for a color you respond to, like the first place you notice a blouse or shirt in a shop. get as large a piece as you can (yardage stores are worth the investment to just pick your color.) place one color per area and just 'live with it' for perhaps a week. You will know immediately when you stand back at the entrance to your kitchen coming in from another for example, what is a wrong. if the color is not right for your house. go around the room with what you think or better yet 'feel' could have an impact. And I would confine it to below the cabinets. Say you love blue, which is enhanced by the orange tone of your room. You'll know it when you see your response. yeah or ney. the tiles are interesting, in particular the Wooden Bridge pattern. It will lengthen you room which is already quite large. You could also bring in a diamond pattern of paint, i.e. harlequin pattern. I would keep the pattern small enough as a back slash. If you want to have the walls around your table as accent walls, the pattern can be much larger. This would be unexpected, thus engaging. You could bring in a floral pattern of table cloth when not using your table. just food for thought, and good luck. You are starting with a beautiful kitchen which many of us do not have either due to cost, size, or ability to keep it clean.

Couldn't get a good look at your granite but I do like the "Cork" above and the "Bisque". No, I'm not generally an orange person and actually, your cabinets would look even more beautiful with a lighter or even richer color, IMHO. The terra cotta tends to dull it down. Your Putnam Ivory is pretty also. Any of these would be very nice with your black furniture. This wall extends into your living room? That would be a consideration when choosing of course. Navajo white is a neutral all purpose cream-white that looks great with your house and your neighbor's too. Never seem to go wrong with that color. I think it's originally a Glidden color that you could have color matched in your favorite brand.

Would it be criminal to paint the cabinets cream or even gray? I feel like they're throwing off the whole kitchen. We just bought this house.

Paint the ceiling. It's starkness is throwing off your perception of the rest of the room. And get a hood i there to keep things from getting greasy and dirty. And think about replacing the flooring. That midtone terracotta is what is setting the stage for the overall orange feel. With that changed to a more neutral and darker tone, then a paint color will be easier to coordinate.

Paint is the last thing to change in a room as it's easy to color match to something to get it where it needs to be. You start any room change with the most difficult and expensive choice to change, and then work your way backwards to the cheaper and easier fixes.

I would definitely not paint the cabinets. I know everyone is sick of having gray paint suggested, but I think this area is crying out for warm gray wall paint, maybe BM edgecomb gray. "We just bought this house" is when I say, live with it awhile. Please do not paint your cabinets! I will say looking back at your photo, if you paint, paint the bulkhead last. The colour used there may have been chosen by sellers to help cabinets look taller with illusion that they blend up to the ceiling.

Cabinets are not standing out ( they are beautiful) blending in with wall color. Go with lighter color ( creams, light taupe) pick something that you find in your marble. Lighter paint will reflect light better also. Do you have a favorite picture, placemats etc to pick for accent color? Use your accent color for that pop off color to spice up you kitchen, dining and living room. This will make all your rooms flow together. Look for neutral colored backsplash using accent color in kitchen with towels, dishes etc will allow you to change color without to much expense. Judy

The color does blend in with the cabinets and makes the space look boring. Take some clues from your counter-top and see what would be a great accent. Maybe a darker color on the back splash and over the cabinet areas.. That would give the kitchen it's own identity while still working well with the colors in the dining area.
I can't tell if your chairs are black or a deep brown, but if they are a brown then try that color..
Another idea would be to use a darker tile for the back splash.
I agree with those that say not to paint the cabinets as they are too beautiful to paint!!

Those suggesting contrast and the need for color besides what you have are those who do it that way professionally. Many listen because the assumption is they're "professionals" and must be right. Many of us, men especially find the "professionally designed" kitchens frightening to look at and a place to avoid at all costs. Seriously, how many color tones do you need in a kitchen before it starts to look like a circus? Would you add colors to your car paint after you've had it for awhile? You have a beautiful kitchen and I'm sure everyone in your family enjoys being around you there, too.

I loved this dark stained wood. It would enable you to keep the chairs you have because of the color.

For heaven's sake don't paint this room or cabinets any tone of gray--that is just so overdone and (to me) depressing...
gray and brown/tan are just two colors that don't go together except in depressing winter landscape...

I have had good luck in three different houses with using a Kelly Moore color--neutral--called Arizona Heat--
sounds like it would have yellow/orange tint but it is surprisingly straight light tan...
Personally I think you can paint the kitchen one tone/shade and use something similar but lighter/darker in your living area--and definitely paint your ceiling the same color in both areas--
so maybe use 3 tones -- 1 for ceiling uniform throughout--1 same card lighter or darker for the kitchen and then reverse for LA...

Changing out a floor is expensive and if you are not really sure what you want could be a very expensive mistake not easily remedied like repainting...
You can use color to create a little more hint of separation in the areas as long as they coordinate w/each other...

Yes Bob, an over the top redo would not be good, but a minimalist accent to bring out the beauty of the custom cabinets would be suggested. If it is approached so that a classic look that will last through time is used, then that is the correct way to go.
I would surmise that the realtor who sold the house suggested the walls all be painted with a muted tone. That is often the suggestion so that a house looks like a blank canvas waiting for the next person to put their own identity into it.
I always suggest those wanting to accent to think of it as a great painting that needs to be framed. Would you use a huge ornate frame for a master piece or would you use a frame that brings out the beauty of the piece?
Since the home owner wants to do something different with the kitchen , then I am suggesting the minimalist approach..

An easy thing to try--that allows for changing your mind w/o lot of effort is to buy a rug to use as runner in the space between the island and the sink/wall...or one under the line of bar stools on the island--although a rug in that area wouldn't be my suggestion for real day to day use since it likely would make using the stools impractical...
go to Target or BBB, WalMart, Macy's or Home Goods--whatever store in your area has good selection of colorful cotton rugs--

If you can find rugs with different colors/patterns--some more bold/bright, some subtle and tone/tone then you can see what looks good and what doesn't work...w/o doing anything but shopping...
Then if you find a rug whose colors you do like--you can get them color matched at any decent paint store in a small pot and make some sample boards...

Stick with a neutral---but more tan-beige than the red-undertones in current color. I don't like the idea of gray with your cabinets or counters, even if gray is trendy now…

Try colors in sample sizes before buying a gallon.

Please try the Ben Moore painting tool where you can upload a pic of your kitchen. It's pretty accurate and will give you the ability to try out any suggestion or idea. I used it when choosing a color for an accent wall and when I painted, I was shocked at how close the pic with the online painting tool looked to the color in person.

Did I read that correctly above? That if you REDO your entire kitchen cabinets then you could keep your barstools? WHAT???

Please do not paint your cabinets! They are beautiful, and it seems like there isn't any wear and tear on them.

I agree with suggestions above to use a neutral color on the wall and find some color inspiration for accents. As I suggested, a stone backsplash will make a huge difference.
