I'm wondering if anyone can help me pick an area rug for my living room.

I'm leaning toward something that looks like a natural fibre (like some kind of woven texture?) or something earth-toned. But, that's what I always do and I'm known for not having the best taste and making design 'mistakes.' I've been loving the look of shag rugs and that's when I knew I couldn't be trusted to make this decision myself!

What do you think? Solid colour? Pattern? What colour(s)?

The other question is placement, should I put it in the middle of the room, or in between the couches?

Of the two pics the first is from the middle of the room facing west and the second is from the middle facing east.
