every once in a while i stumble across something in an antique shop that i just cannot resist, like my window that was salvaged from an old asylum, or my old dresser with its tiny wooden wheels, and little oval swivel mirror. Items like these literally make me smile when i pass by them. And another way i love to decorate is by opening all windows and doors and letting in the view from both front and back porches, it's like living art to me, nothing more beautiful and nothing more free :)

Color, color, and more color! Blue, pink, green, yellow, red, purple, orange, and all shades in between - and did I mention that I LOVE color?!

A number of years ago my husband and I quit trying to figure out what to "do" for anniversaries. Almost on a whim one year we bought a beautiful piece of art glass. Ever since then, that's what we do....it may be on, or around our anniversary. Now we have a collection of beautiful, light catching works from regional artists. Bowls, vases, pots, even a blown glass pitcher. The best thing about them is that unlike a wall hung art piece, these can easily move from room to room, from tabletop to buffet to display. I love every piece we have chosen together.

I love the pieces of family history we have: my great-grandmother's cherry dresser, and the complementary (not matchy-matchy!) mahogany dresser my husband inherited from his father; the Seth Thomas Regulator wall clock my grandfather used as postmaster in a small TX town (he inherited it from HIS great-uncle, who was also a postmaster though in another part of the state), my mother's china and crystal, and my grandmother's silver service.

Each time I look at these material things, I remember the good people who used them before me, and how much I love them still and always will.

Added: Almost forgot the trunk my several-times great grandmother brought from Virginia in the covered wagon to her new Texas home, which still has the carding comb and some spun yarn inside. My sister has the spinning wheel.

We have a miniature metal pennyfarthing on our bedroom wall. Don't ask me why, I just love it.

We have some lovely items from my mother-in-law. I always admired them in her home and now feel fortunate to now have them in ours. This framed Chinese fan and Bavarian floral figurine are a couple favorites.

Yes, things with history! Original artwork (as in the photo tag I use at the left, a photo taken by my artist daughter!). Displaying items purchased on travels, also the best!

I love the large windows & high ceilings, but I also have art glass wall sconces & two chandeliers I love!

I love the artwork I have around the house from mainly people I know. Some were purchased, some were gifts. And many old black & white photographs of my family. Have a lot of cool ones of them.

We love decor that incorporates over scaled natural elements. Just like in our Hollywood Regency Residence-- the tall organic branches emphasize the ceiling height and add visual texture.

You folks are going to die laughing, but I've had a version of this print in my various living quarters since the '70s and still love it. There's just something so clean and happy about it! In my last place it was over the bed, but this time it will be somewhere different, probably with a red frame.

I love my natural stone lamps (amethyst, selenite, salt lamps). I just love the glow through the minerals. I loved opening the front doors at my old house--a 1904 classic Pittsburgh box. They were double doors, and the front porch was screened. The house sat up about 10 feet from the street, and the view across the street was just trees and greenery. It was beautiful. Of course there were little houses to either side but all I could see was the trees!

I love framed candid photos of our family and of various places we've been. The material things i love the most are the things received from loved ones. Love my grandmother's canning jars she used, now filled with marbles I played with as a small child when at her house :-). Love to look at the beauty of our back yard and river, and enjoy the artwork of nature :-).

The thing I love about this post is that no one has mentioned one trendy item as things they love. Many are gifts, collections, nature, things with a history. Those are the things that make our houses a home.

Oriental rugs. Rocks that I happen to pick up here and there. Down comforter!

My MIL's cherry Governor Winthrop style desk, my FIL cherry dresser/chest my husband uses, a small triptych mirror(s) that was a wedding gift to my husbands grandparents, an original art hanging by our older daughter, photograph taken by our younger daughter, hand painted china dish by my grandmother, raggedy quilt my grandmother and mother made together during the depression, and a corner hutch my husband made for me from scrap lumber and a few basic tools. So, agree with most others that the sentimental items are the ones I treasure most...they have a history of others cherishing them too.

makaloco...I remember that Picasso poster!!! Yep, had it in our first house in the 70's and it always brightened my day too.

There are so many things I love in our home (otherwise, why would I have them, duh!) but the one item that always brings me joy is my pear picture with the hidden naked lady in it. My dear friend is an artist and when I saw it I knew it had to be MINE!

These two teak Kinari, found in a field in northern Thailand, bring back such sweet memories...and they are beautiful to boot. We never tire of appreciating the carving--superb craftsmanship.

I love functional eye candy everywhere I look. The natural light that washes across the rooms, and seeing spring coming outside... visible from most places in our home.

My gargoyles are my favorite "decorative"....otherhalf got them for me as an anniv. gift before we found our downsized house. It was an implicit promise that we'd find our "castle" (and we had looked and looked for years) someday. Finally we DID find it! The first project was the fireplace, then driveway pillars for the gargoyles. The pillars were built from leftover fireplace stone and some old bricks from our OLD house. The gargoyles are on top, of course. They symbolize our marriage, our home(s) and our warped sense of humor.

Here they are dressed as turkeys, for Thanksgiving. :)

The blue toile curtains in the dining room are my favorite decor item, but what I love about my house is the way the light comes in, all day.

The balance and flow between beautiful pieces in my home is what inspires me. The mixture of my grandmothers chair reupholstered with a new sofa and vintage coffee table topped with my favorite lamp brings me peace. My home is my refuge and a place of artistic expression. I am inspired by the persian rug I inherited from my parents. This is probably my favorite if I was to choose one...

I love antiques, and our savonarola chair is one of my favorites. It can go anywhere and look great, from an entry to a bathroom
