A rug is definitely needed in this space because the table and chairs are dark and against the wood floor area lifeless. A medium to medium/large scale pattern with a color that works in the room (cannot tell from your photo what color the walls are) will add life to the space. This photo is just to show pattern and it can be made up in an area rug with a border or wide binding to the size desired.

We are definitely pro-rug! Adding a rug to a dining room with wood floors creates a complete, and more comfortable feeling space. This is because the rug gives a nice break between the hard surfaces of the floor and the table. Be sure to get a rug big enough to fit the table and chairs on. You don't want the rug to look too small for the space. If you are worried about the rug getting dirty/stained consider an indoor/outdoor rug. There are some great looking ones out there now, and they are stain resistant and can be hosed off if dirty.

From the pictures, your space looks pretty neutral, which means that you could do what every color scheme you want! If you are planning to keep your red painting in the room, we suggest that you pick a rug that has a similar red in it. And maybe a big, decorative mirror on the other walls.

Rug! Try a rug with some color, since the table and floors are darker. Then you can use the color that pops from the rug to choose your other decorations, paintings and so forth to really make it all tie in. Good luck!

I am pro rug. I would recommend one that is on the thin side (not thick or shaggy/textured) so it's easy to push and pull the chairs. I have a pretty floral patterned, *oriental rug* kind of rug, sans fringe, cotton weave, that is easy to spot clean, and light enough to pick up and take to dry cleaners when needed. The pattern hides spots. I think you need to go with a pattern to hide possible stains.
I really like the pattern of the 4th one but the texture won't work well for a dining room. Just like sarainitaly commented, you need something that won't get caught when you are pulling up the chairs

I think a lighter color rug works best since the table and floors are darker. Your curtains/drapes are white so I think a natural color with a pattern as aliya6982 suggested to hide possible stains.

I see a red painting on the wall. You may like something to compliment that color. I think room without the rug may look unfinished . And dogs love it!
