Whenever we begin designing any custom seating, we start with the 18"/18" rule of thumb. Basically, the seat is about 18" deep and about 18" from the floor or so. Knowing how thick and firm your cushions are going to be will be helpful. Often, mocking up a protype seat is very helpful and informative. This will help you dial in the slope of the back of the seat and maybe the overall height as well.

You're welcome. Sometimes, we literally take cinder blocks, bricks plywood, and various pillows and cushions and play around with different angles and heights to see what we want to accomplish. Also, have multiple users try out various configurations to see what gets the most favorable responses. Good luck with your project.

Hi Suzanne, what is the diameter of your fire pit - width of cap/ wall and also the opening itself? Looks like space between bench and edge of fire pit is around 24"-30"? Thank you

tomaszb your question was about the diameter of the fire pit, width of cap and wall as well as the opening of the fire pit. Fire pit diameter is 50.5" Dia., cap width is 10.5". The surrounding fire pit wall is 14.5" H and at the nearest point from the bench it's 28" away. I hope this helps visually. The cushions are also 22"D and we had the cushions cut so they would fit into a storage bin when we needed to store them. (When template was complete I cut the template at the right length to fit inside the storage bin.) The individual cushions we used for the back are 18" square. All fabric is Sunbrella.

The top paver cap is 10" and sits back from the front, with only an inch forward. Also for comfort when you lean back. There are 6 seat cushions made with Sunbrella fabric and they are 3" high for extra comfort.

Is Sunbrella fabric the best for outdoor use?

In my experience it is. Of course you still would want to wipe cushions down every once in a while to avoid stains and to keep them looking fresh and new.

Was the backrest and the bench both poured at the same time? Curious as to how the contractor formed up the bench/ backrest. Great looking design.

Thanks Jeffrey! That was indeed a task. They had to lay out the design with brick and rebar then pour the concrete into the brick base. The back was poured first. Then when they built the bench they had to encase pool pipes in a cage for protection, then build around them. It was quite the feat.
