You can always change the plate but rewiring can be a challenge. You can print a picture on a canvass, that is deep, and put a hinge on it that covers up the dimmers. It will look nicer and looks awesome when you open it. As for the lights, I don't know if you are renting and what your landlord will let you do. If you are renting there are certain codes on electric that need to be followed and you might be able to make the landlord pay out of pocket for new lights. You might be able to stick a shade over them or pay out of pocket for an electrician.

I have a different idea from the above: getting wall plates and switches and modern dimmers is not that expensive at all. You can go to an electrical wholesale type facility in your area or order something online. I am assuming your wiring is up to date. It actually doesn't cost that much to hire an electrician to come in and change out the switches and lighting if you are organized and get it done all at once.

I didn't assume you were renting. If you are, just get permission from your landlord in writing before you make any changes to the electrical.

i would rather by some spray paint! bronze or satin. u have to keep the actual switches but get new faceplates even on line!

I would change those switches out to decora style switches / dimmers with lutron screwless cover plates. Would be very inexpensive and you could probably do it yourself with a little youtube help and the breaker off.
