what color sofa for lake home with dark hardwood floors, stone firepla

I'm thinking of using a natural color leather in this new lake home family room, lots of windows, beautiful stacked stone fireplace. Dark beams, dark wood floors and neutral paint. Of course, the sellers have moved out, so it is empty now. The room next to it is a dining area and then living area with red paint (which we will change eventually) it's very open. You can see these two rooms. I tend to use darker leathers, burgundies, etc. but I think it should be lighter, but with some contrast in a home directly on the water. Help! And my husband really wants a matching leather recliner, but I'm not sure about that!

Dark grey would look nice. Or possible the dark blue color in the side table covering could work on a sofa. You'd definitely need to get some pillows to tie it into the room.

What accent colors do you like? The room has a lodge vibe. Camel leather would be nice to keep the lodge look. If you want more beachy, how about a slipcovered couch? And a recliner of course.....

Fabric ottoman with your leather sofa and recliner would look great. There are so decent looking recliners available.

My first choice is a warm rich caramel leather sofa.

Are there other fabric or rug colors in your furnishings that will need to work with this open room? Those that will be nearby? I would analyze the colors that you lean to as accents or pulling a color (light or dark) variations from those elements.

Maybe it's artwork that will go in or near this room. If you are changing existing furnishings, that will open many color options available to make some choices.

If you want to stay in a somewhat neutral feeling, soft natural soothing tones will be lovely.

If you want more dramatic with some higher saturated colors, you can be open to stronger color. On the other hand, stronger colors can also be sprinkled in the room in accessories or art if the sofa stays more neutral.

it all depends on your style,if you are traditional perhaps you might like this ,in my opinion is geared to the outdoors and very masculine.

I have no colors chosen, but will use a rug, pillows, wall art, definitely to accent. I just am wondering if a natural or tan (oatmeal, wheat) color sofa would be a great starting piece. I actually need to see the space again before I choose too many pieces. The house is in another state and we have only seen it once. We are very traditional. Thanks for the ideas, please keep them coming!

Can you post the items that are going in the room? Can you take pics of them in your present home? Do you have photos of the items you will be using in this room? Can't suggest if there might be other color choices because of your other furnishings.

Of course a pale neutral or any light neutral will work with anything else you will be using. You can accent any neutral sofa with colorful pillows with colors chosen from the items you have and want to use.

Light colours are fun they bring light and life to any room but this all depends on whom will live there , if there are small children and pets who loves climbing on furniture , come in the house wet after a rainy day a swim in the lake and dirty muddy paws then I personally would choose darker colours ,one the dirt doesn't show much ,stains are not as noticeable.

I would go with lighter colors so the space doesn't get too dark. In leather, a camel color - lighter than the caramel (above) would look great with the red already in the house.

I'm wondering if leather is a good idea in a lake-front property because of sand, mud, water marks, etc.? Maybe something with slip covers that could be washed quickly and easily. Also, maybe if you either limed or painted the beams and floor it would lighten and brighten the room. If you had two sets of slip covers and curtains (e.g. warm thick wool tartan furnishings for winter, and light linen/cotton ones for summer, then you could create two different moods appropriate to the seasons.

What a fabulous room! I would not go with any burgundy tones in this space. Keep in mind how your furniture will work with the colour of the stone in the fireplace as well as the wood of the built-ins that flank the fireplace. I would not go light (or white) in this room, you need something to balance with the fireplace wall. Otherwise everything you put in the room will feel lost in comparison. A light carpet with dark furniture would be my advice. Good luck from Montreal!

Here are a couple of ideas for your beautiful lake home. Also, instead of a regular recliner, there is a new recliner that is well worth looking at. It is coming from Europe next month and it is called "Stressless" by Ekornes. Catalog link: http://www.ekornes.com/us/e-catalog/

I like the light colour furniture too,, and you can do a darker carpet… If you do the darker furniture, keep the carpet light. A mix of the two would be nice... -- I wouldn't match everything, maybe make the recliner darker/carmel leather, as I'm sure it will be well used. There must be nicer recliners out there that don't look so frumpy and big that will keep streamlined with the rest of the furniture.

My home has a very similar style with dark floors, stone fireplace, etc . I currently have dark leather furniture and am not happy with it. It blends too much with the dark floor and makes the room seem very heavy and dark. I would suggest a mixture of leather and fabric upholstered furniture pieces. It looks good to have a mix of textures . A sofa (possibly a sectional sofa or two separate sofas) in an upholstered oatmeal, caramel or cream fabric. If you like brown leather , then perhaps you can find an elegant leather recliner with nailhead trim to please your husband. Also a large leather cocktail ottoman with nailhead trim. I would then add a couple of fabric chairs with a patterned fabric as accent pieces. Throw pillows, cozy throw blanket and patterned rug in shades of smoke blues and grays would look lovely with your fireplace stone and mimic the colors of your lake view too. These colors would also look good with the current golden wall color. Adding pops of white to the space with, for example, a large floral arrangement (white orchids are very popular in interior design right now ...unless you are going for a rustic lodge style) can really brighten a space as well . I would add dark wood end tables and sofa table behind sofa... And of course lamps and decorative accessories . It's a beautiful room! Good luck!!

    Hi Lisa,
What a beautiful room to gather in! We love the idea of a lighter cream or grey colored couch in there. And while you say you're leaning towards leather, if you are thinking of lightening things up a bit, we could see something in a linen or cotton upholstery contributing to a summery lake house vibe, especially if you have dark floors. We see a pair of matching armchairs across from the couch to make it really cozy, and as for the recliner...maybe your husband could compromise and settle into a leather chair with matching ottoman to throw his feet up on? We've included and really cool one below!
