bgfuqua - Thanks so much for your comments. I'm always on Houzz or Pinterest looking for ideas. Most of my furniture and art is family hand me downs or from Goodwill. I'm extremely sentimental as well as frugal and keep everything. Just need help on what to keep and what to get rid of and how to organize my belongings. Looking for ideas on how to make the area flow better or pop with something unique or colorful.

On the gallery wall how about removing the lamps on the piano and the two side chairs? Do you use either? Maybe recessed cans in the ceiling would be better. Looking at your space I'd say editing would have a great effect. The plant arrangement on the table by that painting looks sort of small and distracting to me. I'd edit that out. Is there a kid's chair under the coffee table? I'd move that out as well as the yellow vase - is it on the floor?

Maybe clear the mantle except for the wood piece which is currently on the piano? I think some of the stuff you have is a smaller scale and there is quite a bit of it and that may be what is not giving you the look you want. There also looks like alot is on the other wall - is that a victorian birdcage on top of the white thing? If you just add different couches to your set up I don't think it will give you the look you want. I think you have a great start and some cool things - probably just too much stuff!

The room doesn't strike me as "cluttered" so much as dingy. The white stone of the mantel etc is a great focal point. I'd lighten everything else to bring the room in line with it. The roughness of the stone calls for sleek lines in a sofa to add some tension. I'd go white with the walls. The mirror above the mantel looks dated. What about something with more gleam---a more contemporary mirror, or a large painting or photograph with strong graphic elements to emphasize the centrality of the fireplace. Not sure what the floors are made of but would add an interesting carpet--also something light but with interesting texture and/or graphic appeal.
