Gorgeous home. I would go with red, its classic and looks great with black and white homes.

Since your house is white with black accents I think any colour would look great! I would avoid too dark because you want the front door to welcome, not disappear, but if you do want darker make sure it is a gloss and has some some great accents and a nice kickplate at the bottom.

What is your favourite accent colour from inside your house? Use that on your front door so there is a nice transition to the interior decor of your home.

re: columns. So much white on the house! Plus, there's an imbalance. After looking again, I see that the shutters are too small. Shutters should look like they actually cover the windows; these don't (except for maybe the small window on the second floor). Also, could you paint the downspouts on the roof black so they don't stand out?

Maybe once the front door, sidelights and trim are painted, the columns won't look so hugely white (I agree, off-white is bleah). Could you post a close up photo of the door, with the sidelights, stairs, porch lights, etc so we can help with the detail?

I absolutely adore the look of Dutch Colonials. And think that front doors are so important in homes. Let's make yours perfect!

I would take down the railings and the storm door. I would replace the sidelights with windows that
went all the way down to the bottom. I would paint everything with in the inside of the outside trim the same color to make the front door look larger. I don't think the color really matters as much as it's one that you really like. The shutters are too small and you need to add shutter dogs. These changes to your home will make the entrance look larger and simpler, and therefore more welcoming.

Taking down the shutters just on the window over the door, removing the railings, and painting the interior of the entire front door will make the door much more important. In turn, it will also make the columns appear smaller.

After the door is painted you could add a large knocker and kickplate . This will help make the front door the focal point of the front of the house. A larger outside light night also be in order.

Red or yellow would be beautiful and timeless. But I like the idea of something unexpected like a blue or green.

I think you should go with something that will really show off your door. As others have said, think about your favorite color and give it a try. Keep in mind it is a door...and paint. You can always repaint it if you decide you don't like it. I took a leap last year and love it. It makes me smile every time I look at my door. There may not be another soul who likes it, but I don't care. Go for it!

I would paint the downspouts over the roof the same color as the roof. That will make them disappear into the roof color. You might consider barn red, harvest gold or pumpkin as colors for the front door area.

A bright bold red or blue will always work in this situation. How adventurous are you? How about a statement green! My thoughts Sherwin Williams - a rich Shamrock SW6454 or Isle of Pines SW6461 or a bright Festival Green SW6924 or Gecko SW6719.

The part of the country you live in and the direction your house faces will have an impact on the color you paint the front door. Colder climate equals warmer colors.

I know what you mean Polly. After submitting picture of my house and a paint sample, it still took a month to get permission to change the color of my front door from the architectural review committee. With this in mind, I think I would go with the red front door. Since you have a roof over the entrance, you can use a brighter red for The front door. I hope this helps.
