Living room ideas

We just bought this house, and don't want to go through the expense of redoing the floors--so dark green floor tiles it is. Any suggestions on designing the living room in a way that complements the flooring? We were thinking white walls would be fresh but washed out--maybe a gold/yellow wall with dark colored wood, and natural stone/pebble tiling as an accent? (The furniture isn't ours--we have a white colored sofa).

The floors aren't SO bad. Yes, maybe warm up the walls a bit. Orient the furniture to acknowledge the architecture of the room. A carpet would go a long way to making the floor frame the room rather than being the focus.

Some color on the walls and a very large area rug would help a lot. Change the light fixture to something warmer and more interesting! It looks institutional. And is that a dog head taxidermy in the sun room??? Yikes! You were brave to buy this house. Warm it up, please!

Dark wood furniture? And where would you put pebble stone tiling?

This space has a lot of potential!

I would paint it a warm taupe. Here are 2. One a little lighter, the other a little richer.

The current furniture arrangement ignores the door. Make sure you don't make that mistake. You need an upgraded light fixture. Choose a rug that has some of the floor tones in it. This way, the floor and rug will blend, and the floor will not be such a feature. (Sofa I am showing as a facsimile of yours).

Thanks so much! What do you mean by "ignores the door"?

Got it--think the red couch was from a renter. Definitely looks out of place!

dinabea took the words right out of my mouth!

So, did you take that most recent photo, standing in the glass area?

Can you take some photos standing farther back and from a few different angles?

Interesting art----may I ask what it is?

Hi, cdr! No, these photos were from the real estate agent's website. We only get the keys in a month or so. Here's a few more photos. The first paint swatch looks great, as do the wooden decorative vases, but I'd probably opt for a lighter, less busy rug. I really like what you've done with the bathroom tiling on your website and it looks somewhat similar to our kitchen. I'm thinking of swapping out the white tiles to try and give the kitchen an updated look.

symanning, thank you for the complement on the tile on my Houzz page! That is stacked stone you see in the bath (slate).

I do think your kitchen, though, looks great!

If I were going to put $ into tile/stone, I would do it in your family room, as you mentioned earlier. I am thinking the fireplace could use updating and stone be incorporated around that. What do you think?

Do you have any existing furniture? We really need to know that before choosing a rug. Just a white sofa is all you have now?

It looks like you like neutral tones. What you could do is to bring out the beige in your tile in the family room. Maybe add a couple of green accents.

Hi CDR, thanks so much! I really like the rug with the colored circles, and the stacked stone around the fireplace is a nice idea. Would you envision building a whole structure around it? Our old furniture isn't that significant. We have cabinets here and there from our previous apartment that might not suit the new place. Here's a photo from our old family room, which shows what we had...

You have a blank slate, then. That's great. You will have a tv in this room? I am not seeing anywhere else to put the tv, except on the fireplace wall. Is that right?
Yes, that's right. Not an ideal location but looks like the most logical place!

Is that a wood-burning fireplace and do you want to keep it wood-burning or do you want to change to a ventless?

What about the tv on the wall to the left of the red couch in first photo? Actually, it would work well with your sectional. Couch would face the window wall, with the chaise on the outer edge.
The fireplace is wood burning and we're keeping it that way. The tv on the short wall makes sense--perhaps we can put a mount on it that can swivel. My husband may not like that the tv is the first thing you see when you come in the room though...

Hi cdr, quick question: would you be able to advise us on our house design virtually, as we live in amsterdam? What would be the cost? Thanks!

I would not try to pick up wall colors in the floor tile. Actually, Iike your first idea about painting walls white. Take a cushion from your sofa to the paint store to get the "right white". That will look very fresh and modern and not washed out at all.

What is your style of furniture and what does your sofa look like? Is it stark white or off-white? A large area rug with some oversized art on the walls will make your room come together. Ignore the floor--any attempt to "match" the floor will only draw attention to it.
