Greetings Eva! We are soon to start design on a custom home. This will be our third custom home (this time in Idaho, the other two in Oregon) and fourth if you could a remodel we did of a CA home where we gutted a 2400 SF house and then added about 800SF addition. Each of those has been universally accessible design, AKA wheelchair friendly. I have MS and so think about access in homes. Ironically each one has sold to a family where none of the members are disabled. So surprising there isn't more focus on universal design on Houzz since with so many folks wanting to age in place it makes so much sense. The design / builder we are working with for our next project tells us that ten years ago no one was asking about these things and now on the projects they do it seems everyone is asking about these things, thinking ahead for barrier free showers and wide halls and doorways and so on. I'll look forward to seeing your progress and your tips if you find them on Houzz. I've noted a few esthetically beautiful designs with accessibility in mind here. But too few. And my hubby's and my experience is universal design does NOT have to be the institutional relics of the past and when done right has broad appeal on resale...not to mention super comfortable to live in. Only tip I would offer is not to let your quest for perfect be the enemy of the good. ;-) Nothing will be perfect. There will be compromises made. And in this too we've found it best to have function lead form and not the other way around. :-)

Thank you Michele, your input is much in accordance with my gutt feelings. As we are planting from scratch (haven't found a house floorplan that ticked all the boxes) we indeed plan 4 foot corridors (mimimum) zero threshhold showerstalls etc. But what about sinks for exsmple ? Must I go for no vanity ones ? We are only in our late fifties and late sixties right now snd in really good shspe (touch wood) but thinking ahead now seems essential.
