Looks like some kind of white or a pale gray would transform this kitchen, but more photos (including floor) help get better advice.

Cabinets are fine. Backsplash does not go with granite IMO.

The backsplash would be what I would change. Do some of the backsplash tiles have flowers on them?

For what you have going on, a tumbled travertine or marble stone. Maybe in a subway tile. If you like something more modern, do a glass subway tile in a neutral shade. You could still paint your cabinets an off white or cream shade, rather than a bright white, or you could keep them as is. A new backsplash, and new hardware, will make a big difference. Since we can't see the rest of your kitchen, we have no idea what the walls look like or even what colors you have surrounding the area.

these pics will give you an idea of what your current cabinets would like w/a backsplash update. Also, change the hardware on your cabinets. Something a little more up to date would look better.

Many people are working with their oak as is either because they prefer wood or because painting oak is a bit difficult. Oak is not a paint grade wood because the texture of the grain shows through the paint, but many people paint it and like it anyway. Painting ones own cabinets is difficult and best done by a professional unless you are a patient and experienced DIY person.

Despite what is said on HGTV, many people live happily with oak and are looking for ways to refresh their kitchens without breaking the bank. Some of the pictures above are lovely examples of what can be done. I recently had new counters, farmhouse sink and backsplash installed. My kitchen is in a cottage / french country / vintage style.

Beautiful kitchen sunnydrew!

We decided to have our oak cabinets professionally painted. We felt like it made a dramatic difference. We also changed the backsplash which made a huge difference, as well. Here is a before and after photo of the kitchen.

As someone mentioned, it is lots of work. The cabinet doors have to be taken off, sanded, and spray painted by a professional.
