Going back to the very first picture you posted and I still don't understand why you couldn't center the original rug with the fireplace. The one you just got is very pretty-- too bad you can't get the colors reversed with the gray being the pattern and the other color being the background. Go with more color and it needs to be wider than the hearth and pulled away at least 12" to 15" from the hearth.

Hmm, I like the rug, but agree with you that it could be wider at least. This looks a bit skimpy. Love the loveseat you chose. Not sure if the rug needs to be brighter and which one would be better. Hmm... I think I would prefer the one with the burnt orange in it, which picks up the colour in your painting?

I could have centered the original rug with the FP, and I did that in some later photos, but I needed to replace it and it's gone now! I like this rug a lot. of the ones i posted, only the West Elm (cutouts rug) is available in an 8x10, approx., and it seems too busy.

The only thing that you could change is the rug ,the furniture looks fine to me . The Maltese Knight should be placed on the side of the heart

But... having said that, if you love the grey yellow one that you posted last... you can of course go for that one. It's not thát much lighter than the one you have now I think? Or is it, because there's more yellow in it?

Love smaller rug. And Ikea. Have you thought of a sectional ? Get a 3 seater a chaise on each end. That way can go closer to window. So would have good view of TV and FP. You are trying to place everything centered to FP. It doesn't work. 5x7 rug is still good bet. Coffee table too big. Get round 24" or go ottoman. Get rid Of all other furn. Includ sofa table. You are contemporary that means simple low clean lines. I would do sec in a color not any of the brown shades. You could do micro swede. For comfort. Try cow hide rug, from Ikea. Fun and different. Angle in room. You are hung up on rug. Shouldn't be. It's a decor item, nothing more. Yr floors are great show them off. I agree pic over firepl to small and to high 6" above any fur or mantel is ideal.a rectangle large mirror may work. Ck TJMax good price. Or Ikea. They have great lights. Use small end table by sofa and window. Place floor lamp there also.

Thanks everyone. For reasons explained in earlier posts, the room layout won't allow for a sectional or for diagonal placement. The room is only about 14' wide and I need at least 2' alongside the stairs for people to walk from the entrance to the kitchen.

Carolins - I considered the Marquis rug, but it is much paler in person that the photos suggest. In real life, there isn't nearly as much contrast between the colors. I think the rug I posted last is a paler grey and yes, has more gold.

Travis - you say the coffee table is too big, but you said it was too small in an earlier post!

Sorry, I didn't read the earlier posts, way too much too read.... If you love the round chair,I think it would work great in one of the nooks by the fireplace. The roundness from the chair will soften that space. I think I would put it on the opposite side of where your tv is now. I would move your sofa to face the fireplace. On the same side of the windows I would put 2 ottomans for extra seating. You will be able to still see the view from the windows that way. The rug size you have is ok, but a size larger wouldn't hurt. I would eliminate the tv stand and put a bookcase there with books and accessories. The stripe chair I feel is a little too formal for your space. End tables of course, table lamps and floor lamps. A nice sofa table behind he sofa would be beautiful with some accessories and florals...

Your mantel is way too high for a TV to be mounted there (I'm sure you know that already)

I like the yellow cut outs rug and you don't have a lot of other patterns in the rug so it wouldn't be too much or too busy.

Can someone explain to me what a loveseat is? I've been reading this post with interest but can't work out what the difference from a sofa is. Is it something American? My sofa is 64", does that make it a loveseat?

A sofa is full size usually able to seat at least 3 people...a loveseat is smaller and will seat only two...hence the term loveseat...makes sense.

Ginger you have a love seat. Sofa are usually 7-8 ft long.

I'm not a decorator but I would mount tv on mantle and put art work where tv is. I know having tv on mantle is not desirable but is it where you watch tv?

I had to get used to the term too. In the Netherlands we call 1 1/2 chairs loveseats. Which makes even more sense :-)

Your 1st great move was to remove the over-sized cumfy chair. (thu I see why you love it) 2nd good move is loveseat facing fireplace, but the whole space would benefit with the larger rug (see leelee) wider than fireplace. I've ordered the 8x10 West Elm cutouts rug ( http://st.houzz.com/simgs/84b26a1b01a780af_7-1954/home-design.jpg) , and should have it in about 2 weeks. To answer an earlier question: the coffee table is 46" x 30". Now does anyone have ideas of good home items to get in Japan?? I go there on Monday!

I like the idea of art, especially fabric, because then I could get something large but easy to transport. I always try to buy art as a souvenir of my trips. I have this space that needs something, I think.

Sorry to barge in so late to this party, just want to say the last furniture arrangement looks great. The larger more colorful rug and new couch really work. Your beloved round chair still looks a bit oversized and dark for the space BUT it's very meaningful to you so keep it where it is if it make you happy. One thought though maybe cover it with a more neutral/complimentary color(?) anyway, enjoy your great space!

How was Japan?

The room is looking great. So... now people who enter the room have to climb over the big round comfy chair? If not... you could leave it there. It's still a bit big , but I agree with mara49, you love it, so if you can, just keep it there.
It looks better in the space than it did in the original configuration.

Love the rug and the new sofa. This size rug is much better than the tiny one.

Japan was great, thanks. The brown chair is now in a bad position for TV watching, and really is too big for the space, so I will move it to the bedroom. That involves going getting that chair up a winding set of stairs, which should be fun! And those are cat's eyes in the photo
