The flooring used throughout the basement is Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT). “The LVT was basically glued right onto the concrete floor. It works well in a basement, particularly in places where the floor slopes down to a drain,” Campacci says. “And it’s only a centimeter thick.” In a space with low ceilings, every centimeter counts — there’s no reason to bring the floor up any closer to the ceilings than necessary.
While basements divided into enclosed theaters, offices and game rooms used to come up a lot, pros say more homeowners have been opting for all-in-one open-concept spaces recently. This shift has driven a spike in airier general entertainment spaces with room for game tables, movie-watching and kids’ toys. Instead of constructing the elaborate, restaurant-style built-in bar areas that once were all the rage, pros say they’re doing lower-key beverage stations or pub tables that allow for a less closed-off experience.

Underfoot feel. “Some of my clients think it is too hard,” Reinkens says. If you also feel this way, he suggests using area rugs or mats in high-traffic areas or in places you might frequently stand. If your concrete is only sealed in an acrylic sealer, it will feel more like tile, says Felicia Majola-Moropane of Ekhaya Designs. If you use an epoxy coating, it will feel more like linoleum.

Kitchen. The kitchen redo was a full renovation, but they kept the plumbing and placement of appliances the same, which saved money. And the Viking range was already here, which was a huge bonus. They replaced the existing hood with a black one and painted ready-made white cabinets black to match. Along with the teak open shelves, the apron-front sink is a modern farmhouse touch. Because this is a guesthouse kitchen, it doesn’t need as much storage space as a full-time home, so they were able to keep the walls above more open, tile them all the way to the ceiling and add the open shelves
Across from the wrapped kitchen counter is this tucked-in workspace, which also has a poured concrete surface and teak shelves.
Bar counter. As soon as you walk through the door, poured concrete countertops and vintage industrial stools clue you in to the overall style. Note the black window frames, the metal chair bases and the support for the countertop, which wraps the wall from the kitchen into the family room.
