We hired Amsted to renovate a portion of our basement, from January to March of this year. We added a bathroom, office, laundry and linen closet to a part of the unfinished portion of our basement. From the beginning of the project to the completion, we were extremely pleased. Our first introduction was to Paulette, our Project Coordinator. We found an instant connection with her and enjoyed her energy and enthusiasm. She definitely was the reason for us moving forward with Amsted. Paulette quickly recognized our style and was very mindful of our budget but was also able to purchase quality finishings that we wanted. We really appreciated that from her. Sylvie, our Designer, did a wonderful job designing the space and listened carefully to our suggestions and changes/ revisions, which led to a selection of great designs. Along with Paulette, she provided terrific ideas for our new space. Once the project started, we had two excellent Project Managers (Tayrone and Tyler) who were here on most days to ensure that the work was on schedule and being held to Amsted's quality. Both project managers were critical to the success of the project. They noticed small (and bigger) issues that may have gone unnoticed by us and would have it corrected to keep with their very high standards. They were both great. Overall, the people at Amsted were amazing! They made the difference in the success of the project. In addition, all of the sub-trades that worked on the project were very professional and treated our house respectfully. All of the work that was completed was done very well. The quality is top notch. Our project was done on time (even slightly early) and on budget and it fact, our neighbours commented on how quickly it seemed get done. We greatly appreciated having online access to the work schedule to see what work was coming up each week. We highly recommend Amsted and are looking forward to having them back to do other projects at our house!

"I am absolutely prepared to recommend Amsted in terms of quality, construction advice and expertise and dependability. At the same time, it is a Cadillac option. Everything is considered and factored in and you end up with a quality product, but you pay for what you get. Consequently my advice to a friend would be qualified by this consideration." Pricing was always an issue. I was trying to resolve a problem without incurring major costs. I wanted a limited upgrade which fit in with the neighbourhood character, as well as one that could be amortized within the 10 years or so that I expect to remain in this house. I have observed many Amsted projects in my neighbourhood over the years and had an impression of excellence. I wanted quality work, dependable expertise and did not want to be obliged to project manage the work involved. I was always aware that this was not going to be a cheap option, but I did a cost/benefit analysis of what it was worth to me and was very pleased with the results

There are many good things about our renovation, dry basement, beautiful space, deck and 2nd floor balcony that are beautiful and long lasting. However, Amsted seems to have a “chain of irresponsibility” so that getting errors corrected took a great deal of effort once they received payment. Our shower stall was rebuilt 2x after the initial installation because of leaks and Mold. As of now, it doesn’t leak but it is noticeably crooked. Their administrative records are not accurate. We were told repeatedly by several people in the company that a wall was insulated but it was not. Our lovely kitchen cabinets shift with humidity. This was raised during the warranty period but nothing was done. Final touches were rushed and not well installed, so our door locks, bathroom taps, exhaust fans have all either needed replacement or repair.

In August, 2016, Amsted Design Build helped us to create a beautiful master bedroom ensuite with walk-in shower. We chose Amsted to do our work based on very positive past experiences we have had with this company. Since 1995, Amsted has completely renovated our 50+ year old home, and added a substantial addition. We know we are in good hands with Amsted. Our master bedroom ensuite project, however, was the first time we had experienced the "design" aspect of Amsted's Design-Build services. Paulette MacGregor spoke with us about our expectations and presented us with great ideas for materials, colour, and design. We appreciated her attention to the smallest details and love the final product. Steve Putinski did most of the hands on work in our space and did a fantastic job from site protection, demolition and construction, to the final finishing touches. We appreciate the quality of work done by workers from all trades. As we were living in our home during the renovation we appreciated that the construction site was kept clean and we were always informed about the schedule. We would highly recommend Amsted Construction for all construction needs—big or small!

I was delighted with the work done by Amsted. The team kept the project on time and on budget, and they were able to translate my vision into reality. Developing a excellent relationship with your design team is critical, and right from the start, they were friendly and approachable - no question or idea was too small for them to consider. The entire team was amazing. My primary contact was with Paulette MacGregor, and we connected so well. She is so passionate and high energy and absolutely wonderful to work with. She was always available and responded quickly to my emails and phone calls (even on weekends!). She understood my vision right away, and was incredibly helpful in the feedback she gave me on design choices. She was able to source some very specific and difficult to find items. Jason Labelle and Mark Wiggins were also fantastic - from the smallest detail to the most important element, they made the design come to life.

My experience with Amsted has been nothing but exceptional. They were always available to answer questions and concerns that I had. They left the jobsite very clean after each day of work. The schedule of work was nicely laid out and our weekly status meetings provided all the information that I needed and allowed me to ask questions as well. Every member of the team was a pleasure to work with and I would not hesitate to recommend them to family and friends. They were able to update an old family home to a modern and fully-functional family space that I can use for years to come.

When we first stepped foot in what would be our house in the winter of 2010, we knew it was going to be our 'forever home'. An older house, built in the late 1930's, it had had some renovations done along the way, but was in need of a rejuvenation to meet the needs of our growing family. By the spring of 2015 we had added two boys to our family and knew we had some work to do. After seeing Amsted's signs all over our neighbourhood for years, they were one of the first calls we made when thinking about a renovation project. Paulette and Val came to meet us and walk around the house with us, listening and making notes to all our dreams and ideas for what we believed our house could be, and adding in their own ideas where they could. It was important to us to keep the character of our older home, and we felt that Amsted truly understood that, while also understanding the need we had to modernize our home and give us some more living space. By the spring of 2017 we were finally ready to start. Those two years in between saw hundreds of hours of work with Paulette and her team to finalize every aspect of the design and selections: from floor plans, to kitchen and bathroom design and everything in between. Paulette and her team made the selection process as smooth as possible: often she would visit my Pinterest boards to get an idea of what I was looking for to make the most of our time together. We worked hard to ensure as many design and selection decisions were made before the start of our project so there would be no surprise decisions, and as few on-the-spot decisions to make as possible during the project. Paulette's attention to detail was impressive and we appreciated seeing everything in writing to ensure we were all on the same page about our selections and designs. For the first half of our 19 week renovation we stayed in town and were able to meet regularly onsite with Paulette and our Project Manager. For the second half however, we were living at our cottage about 300 kms out of the city. The Amsted team made the most of various forms of communication and always were very well prepared for our weekly onsite meetings when we were able to be in the city for them. Amsted worked hard to ensure that our move-in date was adhered to, so that we had a place in town to be back in time for the start of school in September. Due to delays that were somewhat out of their control, not everything was finished as we had hoped. In the two months that followed we were a bit disappointed that the push to get the last few details finished took as long as it did, and sometimes felt the whole team had moved on to other projects. Overall, we were extremely pleased with the work, craftsmanship and attention to detail Amsted put into our home. The dedication and ownership of project that we saw from Paulette MacGregor has continued to impress us, six months after move in date. I truly miss our weekly design meetings and so enjoyed every step of our renovation project with her. Thanks to Amsted for understanding our vision, and helping us to turn it into reality for our family home.

Quality and client satisfaction were always a top priority during our full house renovation, that took 2/3 of a year to complete. We are extremely happy with the results, even if it took longer than we had envisioned. I hired Amsted after a lot of research for my kitchen project. It was important to me to have a company that stuck to schedule, was clean, and was there to coordinate the trades people. I was not disappointed. Paulette was a wonderful coordinator street from design through to completion and I would recommend her as part of any project. She was wonderful to work with. We have an old hundred year plus house so it was important to respect the house. Their crafts people are possibly some of the best in Ottawa and it’s clear that they are proud of their work with Amsted. Also, having a company with integrity meant that I never had to double guess their intentions or the numbers.

We were very pleased with our room and stair redesign. Amsted staff are highly professional, friendly and caring. This is very important when you plan to spend a fair amount of time with them in your home. I always felt they cared about the finish product and always made sure that were pleased with the progress. The daily emails informing us of the progress of our renovation, any changes, delays or issues is just one way that Amsted is one step ahead of others.

Throughout the process of renovating our kitchen, the Amsted team were professional, imaginative and determined to make everything perfect. We wanted a kitchen with a big punch of red, and Amsted make it work beautifully--on time and on budget. We were especially grateful for the care they took protecting and accommodating our two cats. We were so pleased with the work and the experience that we had Amsted back this year to completely update the exterior of our home.

We are fortunate to have worked with Amsted on several projects, starting in 2010 when we moved to Ottawa and tackled the challenge of turning the family home that we purchased into a residence suitable for an active retirement lifestyle. Since the initial renovation, we have called on Amsted for several other projects, big and small. Amsted always listens carefully to what we are trying to achieve, and comes up with creative ideas that deliver good value for money. Even more important though, is the comfort we feel with the commitment to the highest construction standards that are the hallmarks of Amsted’s work.

We were very pleased with the major renovation project that Amsted did for us in 2013 but even more thrilled to know that they also provided maintenance services. We have used these services several times since 2013 for minor repairs (some electrical issues, some minor exterior repainting, preventitive measures to control ice damming, etc). Each time we have been impressed by the level of client service, the timely response to our requests and the execution of the work. Having a centralized provider of maintenance services of this quality made our busy lives much easier.

We had a very positive experience working with Amsted as they helped us transform our recently purchased 1930s era home to make it our own, including modernizing the kitchen and family room space in the addition. Their support through the design process and professionalism and attention to detail through construction put us at ease. In particular, they flagged a problem with a supplier's product (that we hadn't even noticed) and took "above and beyond" steps to remediate the problem, while minimizing disruption to the project, and ensuring that the finished product was just right. We would use Amsted again for our next project without hesitation.

Amsted transformed our main living space into the home of our dreams. Our goal was to add light, openness and brightness into our living space and Valerie, Paulette and Ray delivered! Our unused sunroom was opened up to let light in the main living area; solar tubes and a fireplace facelift brightened a dark family room and our kitchen was completed renovated. With a big reno it is very easy to let projects get bigger because there are so many great ideas and tempting options out there. Our Amsted team was very respectful of our budget and while we added a few things to the initial plan they did a great job of finding lower cost alternatives which looked great and helped us stick to our budget. They also finished right on time. We had a curve ball with one part of the renovation and one of the nice things of working with a company like Amsted is how they are able to solve problems for their clients. They took care of everything during the renovation and their after-renovation service has also been excellent. You can tell that reputation is important to them and as a client you benefit from their expertise and their commitment to their clients.

I don't know where to begin. I have nothing but praise for Amsted, and nothing but wonderful memories to share. I'll start by challenging some of the "Facts about Renovations" as told to me by so many people who had a renovation done. "Renos are never on time." We were on time even after a couple of hiccups. We gutted the whole front half of our house (kitchen, bathroom, living room and dining room), plus we closed in the front step and redid the whole front walk. All in just under 4 months. The key to finishing on time was Amsted's planning and project management. Planning: We met with Paulette, our project coordinator, and Chris, our architect, early and often to get the design right and to choose our finishes so that there were no hiccups in the schedule later. Paulette was ruthless (in a very kind way) about keeping us all on track, and I swear the woman does not sleep until she is confident all details have been nailed down and signed off. As a team we went over the contract, deliverables and drawings 4 or 5 times to make sure we didn't miss anything, that helped Paulette and Guy create both an accurate budget and schedule. Project Management: Once we moved into the construction phase Guy took over schedule maintenance. He was a master at sequencing all the trades! When he saw a gap in the schedule or a problem with one of the trades he would shuffle the schedule and keep us on track. When we found a surprise in one of the load bearing walls Guy was able to get the beam we needed within a day and away we went. I think that speaks to Amsted's experience in knowing what common 'surprises' can crop up in older homes and what supplies to have on hand, just in case. When we had a hiccup with the plumbing work, Guy worked it out in a professional and diplomatic way, ensuring everyone came out feeling respected and confident in the project's success. Problems are inevitable in any project, it's how they are solved that reveals how good the PM and the company really are. Guy's soft spoken, respectful yet determined leadership style was effective - and inspirational to me. Watching how Guy and Paulette worked with the trades and suppliers helped us understand how Amsted won so many rave client reviews while keeping their long term business relationships strong at the same time. "Renos are never on budget." We only veered from the original budget by $5,000 because we asked for some extra items. Here planning and communication were key. Paulette, Chris and Guy took time to get to know us, how we lived and what was important to us. They listened and heard us, but they also knew when to tell us what would not work or what would put us over budget. Their honesty established trust with us early. They did not low ball the estimates in order to win the contract, then add on costs later. Paulette is psychic. Her ability to pick up on what we would like in colour, wood, tile and fixtures was uncanny. She narrowed down the thousands of options to a set of carefully curated collections for us to choose from and the end result is exactly what we wanted and within budget! The suppliers that Paulette took us to were all extremely knowledgeable about their products. They all spoke very highly of Paulette and Amsted, and we benefited from those well established relationships. Thanks to Amsted discounts we were able to add more finishing touches than we had thought possible. "Renos are stressful." The opposite was my experience, and here I think communication, a genuine passion for their work and commitment to client service made the difference. I looked forward to seeing Paulette and Guy each week, and to our daily emails. I always knew what was happening and when, with news often delivered with Guy's trademark humour or Paulette's trademark enthusiasm. Xena, our dog, recognized the Amsted truck when Guy pulled up and would wait anxiously by the door for Paulette and Guy to come in and they loved her right back. We were honestly sad when the project was done as we missed all the chats and jokes with The Dynamic Duo. As our project manager Guy handled all communications and scheduling with the trades. As I mentioned, when any challenges came up, Guy took care of it, we never had to worry. There was not a single moment of reality TV drama on our project. More than once I came home to find an electrician, or plumber or carpenter or Guy staying just a few minutes late to do extra clean up (he is obsessive about cleanliness on the job site). Everyone respected our home as if it were their own. Everyone working on the project took pride in their work and in adding that "little bit extra" to make every detail perfect. In the end Amsted delivered more than a renovated house, they delivered an improved quality of life for our family. We have a brighter, bigger more functional living space that allows us to entertain friends in style, but also an oasis to come home to after a long day at work. For the first time ever my husband and I were actually able to imagine how great daily life could be after retiring, because Amsted proved to us that it is good to be home.

As a follow-on to the major renovation Amsted did for us in 2014, we chose to use their Seasonal Maintenance Programme, starting in 2016. It's been a boon as Amsted's level of detail, quality of service and flexibility to our schedule & needs have helped keep our home in great shape. As a professional development trainer/facilitator I have extremely high standards when it comes to customer service, leadership and communication skills. I have been worked with Amsted for over 2 years now and I can say that this company has the most professional, wonderful, team oriented, customer service driven staff that I have ever worked with. From the hundreds of companies I have worked with Amsted is by far #1 in my book for communication and customer service. It never surprises me when I read they have won yet another award. We hired Amsted to do a major main floor reno of the kitchen, dining room and living room. We were very pleased with the results - they kept on schedule and on budget and the end result was exactly what we had hoped for. Everyone was very pleasant and helpful, particularly the project coordinator and project manager that we met with on a weekly basis. They often went above and beyond what was required, such as helping us attach a very large and heavy floor mirror. We did a renovation of our kitchen, hallway and powder room in our 110 year old Glebe house in the spring 2016. We selected Amsted Design-Build because we had seen their sign around the neighbourhood a lot and heard positive feedback about them, notably re: their expertise in renovating old houses. Their excellent Better Business Bureau rating also contributed to contacting them. Our project coordinator (Paulette) showed enthusiasm, professionalism and willingness to help us achieve our objective from our first meeting. Her flexibility and availability in responding to the multiple questions I had prior to selecting Amsted gave me confidence that I would be listened to if I selected them. Our project coordinator was always in a listening mode, focusing on what I expressed as my needs, wants and priorities and never trying to push for anything (which is something I had experienced with another company I had contacted for my kitchen reno and didn't appreciate at all). She was also very mindful of the fact that I wanted to stick to a certain budget and she proposed very good options how to achieve this (e.g., where to make compromises etc.). Overall, the entire team was excellent, always focused on making my reno a success and a stress-free process. Our on-site manager kept us updated on a daily basis and our weekly meetings were always focused and efficient. Since our house is more than 100-year old, we were initially concerned about potential negative surprises. Having a discussion about a reasonable budget that would account for some surprises helped deal with this. We notably appreciated the fact that the asbestos testing was conducted prior to starting any work (it ended up being negative, but should the results have been positive, this would have allowed us to have an estimate of the additional cost before work had started). We are delighted with the final product and the entire 6-week process was made smooth by the professionalism and friendliness of the entire team (we lived at home during the renovation). We particularly appreciated how they listened to our concerns and our wants and needs, while keeping in mind the budget we wanted to stick to by proposing options for compromises that would not alter the look we wanted to achieve (we even came under!).

Amsted has been professional and trustworthy, throughout our major renovation project (kitchen, ensuite bathroom and basement). The final result is outstanding and exceeds our expectations. We are already planning the renovation of our main bath with Amsted: we now have a life-time partner for all our future renovation/ construction projects. Long before our actual renovation project began, we knew that we wanted to use Amsted Construction. Given their excellent reputation in the industry and the glowing recommendations from past clients, the decision to use Amsted was an easy one. That being said, however, it was our first time undergoing a major renovation in our home and we were nervous. The renovation involved our kitchen, laundry room, powder room, mudroom, family room + screening in 2 exterior porches - all in all a 3 month project. From the very first meeting with Amsted, that nervousness dissipated and we soon became confident that we had made the right choice. In fact, not only did Amsted meet our expectations, but they exceeded them. Both during and after the renovation, their attentiveness to our needs has been exceptional. Their professionalism is evident in everything they do. Their employees are knowledgeable and take great pride in their work and the company. We are so glad that our first major renovation experience was a good one and we would not hesitate to use Amsted again.

We hired the Amsted team to completely renovate our home. Our home is over 100 years old and has been renovated numerous times, making a complete renovation no small feat. Their update included a full remodeling of the kitchen, several bathrooms, the flooring, the removal of a wall to combine two bedrooms into a single master bedroom, and an update to the roof and windows. In a renovation of this scale, it is inevitable to encounter some issues along the way. The Amsted team effectively communicated any issues as they arose, and were consistent in informing us of progress updates on the renovation. We are particularly happy with the design that Amsted created. Our family now spends most of our time in our combined kitchen and living room, and the layout of all of the rooms is working fantastically well for our young family. We appreciate the work that the Amsted team has done for us.

We had lived in our home for two decades and certain areas, like the kitchen and basement- level laundry, were not really functioning as they should. We’d thought of selling and moving but the more we scrutinized homes for sale in and around the Ottawa area, the more we realized we really liked where we were: the location, our neighbours, lot size and privacy. That's when we decided we’d put our money into doing a major renovation instead of looking for a new place. The online ‘homework’ and due diligence we did -checking out a range of local builders and renovators - led us to Amsted Design Build. They suggested we categorize our ideas as ‘Needs – Wants - Wishes’. This proved to be an excellent way of framing and prioritizing our expectations. It ultimately determined scope and budget. The final drawings and plans maximized the soundness of the ‘bones’ of the house, while substantially redefining our living space. This was especially true of the kitchen, probably the central design point of the renovation. With Gina’s [Deslaurier] help, guidance and ability to incorporate our needs and aesthetic preferences resulted in a working kitchen that gave us all we had wanted, excellent fit and finish in a standout design. During the design phase, in order to help explore the realm of the possible, Amsted recommended we browse Houzz for design ideas. Amsted further recommended that we visit key suppliers to finalize our selections. The guidance we received on our trips to their recommended specialist collaborators for kitchens, flooring, finishing, plumbing, electricals and appliances (Deslaurier, Boone Mondeau, Marchand Electrical and Universal Appliances) helped us select items that integrated seamlessly with the overarching design. The build phase that followed demonstrated Amsted’s meticulous project management process. This included being stepped through the whole process before it began, walkthroughs by each trade, weekly status meetings to track progress and address issues in timely fashion. Scope and budget were closely monitored and all changes, by either Amsted or us, were managed through Additional Investment Requests (AIRs). This kept surprises to a minimum. Amsted proved to be very accommodating – they listened to all our concerns and helped iron out any apprehensions we may have had. At one point when we had reservations about the weathering properties of the proposed siding, Amsted followed up directly with the president of the company in the US and only proceeded once necessary guarantees had been obtained. The outcome: we approved use of the siding and it has proven to be one of the more distinctive features of the rebuild. Throughout, we were kept closely engaged. Where unforeseen circumstances intervened, for example, design changes in ducting resulting from shifting of the furnace, Amsted management got personally involved to help come up with acceptable solutions. This attention to detail and quality inspired confidence, especially as many changes were either considered credits or the additional costs absorbed if deemed part of Amsted’s responsibility. The build phase further reinforced Amsted’s professionalism. Because of the extensiveness of the renovation, we had moved out of the house during actual construction but visited the site daily. As a result, we not only saw the thoroughness of the demolition and disposal but the meticulous way the renovation was conducted. In effect, we saw the house stripped to the studs and then reconstituted with great attention to detail and quality. Throughout the build phase, the worksite was kept scrupulously clean. Critical milestone inspections by City of Ottawa officials were all passed without exception. All through the renovation, accounting was impeccable and the AIR process kept the budget on track. Further, meticulous and accurate statements of accounts later enabled us to avail of the Ontario’s HST Rebate Program on completion of work. Also, Amsted’s comprehensive warranty program has been a continuing source of solid reassurance. What set Amsted apart for us has been the quality and professionalism of the people who made up their team. Each and every person who worked on our site really gave it their all they each knew just what had to be done and did their jobs expertly. The finished product is a testament to their expertise and commitment to client satisfaction. Over the course of the project we came to trust the team explicitly: Steve & Michael Barkhouse, Chris Clarke, Chris Mulholland, Ray, Jim, Steve Mulley, Marty, Nick, Stephanie, Gina, Jeff, Marie-Josee, Veronica, Darrel Robinson, Rob, Gordon, Glen …so many we can’t name them all or thank them enough. Today, the house works: we're both proud and highly satisfied with the outcome. The change from a traditional ‘60s type bungalow to a dramatic open-concept space has truly been a transformation…family and friends who have since visited all vouch for this. When we look at the final product, what we got was even more than what we’d expected. It’s now almost 2 years since we moved back in and 1087 Cromwell is a great joy to live in. We sure made the right choice in picking Amsted as our renovator!

We did a complete kitchen and main floor renovation this summer, and selected Amsted Design-Build because of their numerous awards and customer reviews. We worked with the company from design, all the way to completion, and we were very pleased. The staff truly live up to their commitment to outstanding customer service. The Project Manager was on sight on time every morning, and we were kept informed throughout the project about what was upcoming, and any deadlines we had to meet (product and color choices, etc) to keep the project on track. The construction site was sealed off from the rest of our home, to allow us to remain in the house throughout the reno, and to keep the construction mess at a minimum. Any questions or concerns were openly discussed, so that we were fully aware of all of our options. We were back living in our kitchen on the date set out in our contract, and are absolutely thrilled with the results. We cannot remember what it looked like before.
