I used to do that too and it drove my family crazy. Then one day I had a repair man in my home and he commented how much he liked my living room. He pointed to a piece of iron work above my sofa and said "See I like stuff like that but my wife has a family photo hanging over our couch. I like your house because it looks like a model home."

I took it as a compliment, but later I thought about it. What he was really saying is it looked like nobody lived there. Everything was so neatly tucked away, no family photos, kids' junk on the fridge .... yes, like a model home. If we took our clothes out of the closet, nobody could ever tell how many lived there, what sex we were etc.

That's not how I wanted to live. I think I was sending the wrong message to myself and my family. Last year my house burned down and we are rebuilding. You can bet my home will be filled with stuff that's out of it's place! We all need a little order to our lives but we can't sterilize our families or waste all the fun time tucking things in their proper places. I have changed!

I could not agree with you more. A home needs to feel warm to guests. My home is clean, neat and tidy but shows family and love from past generations. I do not want my home to resemble an office lobby or what everybody else has. Personalize it make it speak about you. I have seven grandchildren and my house tells their story.
