This three-bedroom, two-bath home, designed and built to Passive House standards*, is located on a gently sloping hill adjacent to a conservation area in North Stamford. The home was designed by the owner, an architect, for single-floor living. The home was certified as a US DOE Zero Energy Ready Home. Without solar panels, the home has a HERS score of 34. In the near future, the homeowner intends to add solar panels which will lower the HERS score from 34 to 0. At that point, the home will become a Net Zero Energy Home. *The home was designed and built to conform to Passive House certification standards but the homeowner opted to forgo Passive House Certification.

The goal of the project is to create a space that allows the family to entertain their guests in a welcoming one-of-a-kind environment. Uptic Studios took into consideration the relation between the exterior and interior spaces creating a smooth transition with an open concept design and celebrating the natural environment. The Clean geometry and contrast in materials creates an integrative design that is both artistic, functional and in harmony with its surroundings. Uptic Studios provided the privacy needed, while also opening the space to the surrounding environment with large floor to ceiling windows. The large overhangs and trellises reduce solar exposure in the summer, while provides protection from the elements and letting in daylight in the winter. The crisp hardwood, metal and stone blends the exterior with the beautiful surrounding nature.

Balanced shade, dappled sunlight, and tree canopy views are the basis of the 518 Sacramento Drive house design. The entry is on center with the lot’s primary Live Oak tree, and each interior space has a unique relationship to this central element. Composed of crisply-detailed, considered materials, surfaces and finishes, the home is a balance of sophistication and restraint. This four-story home underwent a major renovation, centering both sustainability and style. A full dig out created a new lower floor for family visits that opens out onto the grounds, while a roof deck complete with herb garden, fireplace and hot tub offers a more private escape. All four floors are connected both by an elevator and a staircase with a continuous, curved steel and bronze railing. Rainwater collection, photovoltaic and solar thermal systems integrate with the surrounding environment.
