The pictures below are of a multi coloured sandstone floor installed at a property in East Keswick which is a village approximately halfway between Harrogate and Leeds. (Not to be confused with the more famous Keswick in the Lake District) The stone floor had not been cleaned professionally for ten years and although the grout looked clean It was clear that any sealer that was once present had long since worn off leaving the stone unprotected. The result was dirt had become deeply ingrained in the Sandstone leading causing the stone to darken and hide its true beauty and rich colouring. The client had tried lots of different products to clean the floor but had not had any luck. I visited the property and carried out a few successful patch tests resulting in the floor becoming much cleaner. They were happy to go ahead with my quote and we arranged a time to return and complete the work. I prepared the area before starting, taping up the skirting boards and doors to protect them from the splashing that can happen during the intensive cleaning process. To get the sandstone clean I applied a medium dilution of Tile Doctor Pro-Clean to the floor and allowed it to soak in for ten minutes. The solution was then worked into the Sandstone using a rotary floor machine fitted with a black scrubbing pad. More Pro-Clean was applied with a hand-held scrubbing brush to get deep into the grout lines and to reach into the corners. Once done the floor was rinsed with water and the soil extracted with a wet vacuum. The floor was inspected, and the process repeated until I was satisfied that the stone and grout had released all the trapped dirt. After a final rinse, the wet vacuum was used to get as much moisture out of the stone as possible and then the floor left to dry out fully overnight. Returning the following morning, I first checked that the floor was dry using a damp meter. The sealer won’t cure if there is any moisture in the stone and I’ve been known to reschedule sealing a floor if the readings are too high. On this occasion I was satisfied that the floor was within acceptable levels, so I was ready to seal the floor. I used three coats of Tile Doctor Colour Grow to seal the floor, this is an impregnating sealer which intensifies natural colours whilst providing durable protection against stains, an essential feature in an area such as a hallway which is subject to constant foot traffic. As you can see from the photos the transformation was quite impressive, the floor became much lighter and almost unrecognisable, the natural colours of the stone were now visible, and the floor looked beautiful. This very large corner site was shrouded in tired and thirsty conventional lawn. Really a bland, uninteresting monoculture—impossible to maintain especially in light of our dwindling resources and our growing understanding about sustainable practices. We chose to approach this project not with the idea that existing lawn is bad, but with respect for what lawn has historically represented: a socially connective tissue. Instead of conventional grass requiring endlessly large amounts of water, chemicals and mowing, this lawn conversion shifts to a naturalistic native meadow mix splashed with wildflowers and drought tolerant native shrubs. It was the clients’ desire to be wrapped by a garden attracting native pollinators and beneficial insects. A wildlife photographer, they wanted the opportunity to open windows and doors and feel immediately connected to a coastal native environment. The handsome new stone walls, stairs and massive boulders became the structural framework containing the loose, coastal sage scrub plant community, holding the landscape together during the dormant months. As we continue to grow our acceptance of and appreciation for climate appropriate California gardens, and embrace the paradigm shift, let us graciously bid adieu to our home’s unsustainable velvet robe.

During fabrication some changes were made, the designer wanted to gain as much space as possible so the contractor had to open up some additional walls where all electrical and plumbing pipes were hidden. By doing that, we had to resize some of the cabinets, which resulted in change an order. The kitchen cabinet fronts had a custom profile which was very unique. All of the custom cabinets were made of pre-finished maple inside and satin lacquer fronts outside. Drawers slides were by Blum under mount soft close; cabinet doors hinges by Blum soft closing. The upper cabinets got under mount LED lights. Living room units were made of pre-finished maple inside and primed outside only; the client wished to apply wall paint on them rather than lacquer that we use to make sure it blends in with the walls leaving rough surface. Overall, we did a fantastic job. Just a small hint to everyone, before you make any decision think first before it might get more costly later.

Northern Liberties Gem- Dyed Concrete to a grey color. We also used an acid to stain and discolor the newly poured concrete. After that we impregnated salt to eat into the concrete to create small holes. As a unique touch we embedded large nails into the concrete and used acid to create shadows of the nail marks into the concrete. The deck was built as a landing area stepping out of the door. In the rear of the yard, steel was mounted vertically to accept the grid and then filled with river rock. Steel trim was installed to the concrete to create the planter areas that border the concrete. Bamboo, trees, shrubs, and flowers were newly planted. The before pics show the previous yard condition. The yard was transformed into a stunning Asian themed work of art. Everything was executed perfectly by the installers who worked on this site. This customer now has a custom one of a kind backyard in Philadelphia, PA.
