The previous award winning remodel of their Burr Ridge home brought these clients back to LaMantia and designers Jackie Prazak and Katie Suva, CKD, CBD when they decided it was time to build out their unfinished lower level. As before, their main objective was to create areas to accommodate their extended (and now grown) family. During the 2013 main floor remodel, a bedroom and Powder Room had been given up to gain the large award winning kitchen, so recapturing those two spaces were high on the “list of desires.” Also on the list was the need for a pool table, a comfortable movie/TV space, lots of game storage and plenty of open area for grandchildren game playing. The stairway into the lower level was the main challenge in this build-out; both the stair run and tread depth needed to be lengthened to perform to code. To create greater head room on the staircase the main beam was cut and a portion was relocated 18”. A second column at the end of the stair run was added to match the required structural column, allowing the last tread to wrap decoratively onto each side. Throughout the design planning many details built-into the main level project were repeated to marry the main and lower levels together. The built-in cabinetry and the mirrored doors in the bedroom can also be found in the Guest Room on the main level. The mirrored element over the bed is actually an interior door glazed with mirrors and hung on its side. The parquet look tile flooring of the new bath is reminiscent of the main level wood parquet flooring while the carpenter built wainscoting also can be found in the main hall of the first floor. The custom walnut stair spindles were fabricated from a photo the homeowner found and loved. In the Movie/TV area the theatre seats are fully powered to accept iPhones, iPads, Laptops, etc. Also note the large chalkboard scorekeeping area with seating for the game players. And, one very special detail can be found under the (now longer) staircase; a private room under the stairs was created with touch-lighting and bean bag chairs for anyone seeking a quiet space.

Designer: Terri Becker Construction: Star Interior Resources For this luxurious kitchen remodel, we removed the marble counter tops and installed quartz counter tops with a waterfall edge for the island. We altered the cabinetry to accept new sub-zero stainless steel appliances, we painted the existing cabinetry a cool gray, added stunning structural porcelain Emser tile in the kitchen and wet bar for the back splash, installed 60" stainless steel under mount sink with two faucets. We installed a custom sliding barn door for the pantry.

The panels along the lower level of the porch, an area sometimes called the knee wall, are HardiePlank. These wide panels provide a horizontal contrast to the porch’s vertical posts. We wrapped the posts and beams (with the exception of the ridge beam where the rafters come together) in a trim by Boral. This trim material accepts stain and paint better than some other materials. It is also more durable than wood and is resistant to rotting, cracking and splitting.

The clients had an existing deck and decortive corner pergola structure that was built over 20 years ago by Creative Wood Products. Time and the elements had taken their toll on the structure and some of the decking areas. We replaced the entire corner pergola with one that looked similar with the only changes being to make the structure sturdier for their chain swing that they hang off of it . Rather than have them go through the expense of replacing all of the decking ( which after 20+ years will still in very good shape across the majority of the deck ) we cut off the areas of comprimised wood and reframed the substructure to accept a feature strip at the bay area . This allowed us to replace the areas of bad material and make it look like a design feature that was always there. It saved the clients considerable expense, and when stained to match, will look great. The corner pergola is now much more stable and ready for years more of relaxing in their chain swing underneath it. Inspiration for a country dining room remodel in Louisville

Set amongst a splendid display of forty-one oaks, the design for this family residence demanded an intimate knowledge and respectful acceptance of the trees as the indigenous inhabitants of the space. Crafted from this symbiotic relationship, the architecture found natural placement in the beautiful spaces between the forty-one, acknowledging their presence and pedagogy. Conceived as a series of interconnected pavilions, the home hovers slightly above the native grasslands as it settles down amongst the oaks. Broad overhanging flat plate roofs cantilever out, connecting indoor living space to the nature beyond. Large windows are strategically placed to capture views of particularly well-sculptured trees, and enhance the connection of the grove and the home to the valley surround.

This is painted as part of Tree series. I chose Aspen for their lovely white trunks and flower-like leaves. The artwork has been accepted to be displayed in the juried show. Coastal Shingle Style on St. Andrew Bay Private Residence / Panama City Beach, Florida Architect: Eric Watson Builder: McIntosh-Myers Construction For this lovely Coastal Shingle–style home, E. F. San Juan supplied Loewen impact-rated windows and doors, E. F. San Juan Invincia® impact-rated custom mahogany entry doors, exterior board-and-batten siding, exterior shingles, and exterior trim and millwork. We also supplied all the interior doors, stair parts, paneling, mouldings, and millwork. Challenges: At over 10,000 square feet, the sheer size of this home—coupled with the extensive amount of materials we produced and provided—made for a great scheduling challenge. Another significant challenge for the E. F. San Juan team was the homeowner’s desire for an electronic locking system on numerous Invincia® doors we custom manufactured for the home. This was a first-time request for us, but a challenge we gladly accepted! Solution: We worked closely with the builder, Cliff Myers of McIntosh-Myers Construction, as well as the architect, Eric Watson, to ensure the timeliness of decisions as they related to the home’s critical production timeline. We also worked closely with our design engineer and the home’s engineer of record, Allen Barnes of Apex Engineering Group, to provide a solution that allowed for an electronic lock on our custom Invincia® mahogany doors.
