This ICF (Integrated Concrete Forms) cottage is based on Bob Chatham’s “Fairhope Green Home” design. The owners liked the design and floor plan of the Green Home cottage and Bob adapted the plans to meet their needs and lifestyle. The overall goal of the project was to build a house that was congruent with Fairhope's traditional cottage-style designs and was structurally certified to withstand a Category 5 Hurricane. The owners also wanted to incorporate the most energy efficient HVAC, lighting and appliances available in order to have a truly energy efficient home. Additional goals included utilizing repurposed and reclaimed materials and existing pine and pecan trees on the one-acre lot for outside and inside wood trim and shelving. The house also has a 3 ton WaterFurnace Geothermal heat pump HVAC system, 10+ inches of Demilec soy based spray foam insulation in the roof.

The Setup This project reimagines a shared bathroom for three young sisters, balancing functionality, aesthetics, and future growth. Originally affected by a flood, the space required a full renovation. The homeowners initially planned to retain the existing layout, but the need to incorporate a second-floor washer and dryer prompted a fresh approach to the design. Design objectives: Create a layout that accommodates three growing sisters while ensuring privacy and functionality. Win space for a new second-floor stacked washer and dryer to meet the family’s laundry needs. Design a bathroom that feels youthful yet timeless, growing with the girls as they transition from toddlers to teens. Include ample storage for everyday essentials. The Remodel Design challenges to be solved: The need to incorporate a washer and dryer without compromising existing bedroom/bathroom storage. Creating functional storage for a shared bathroom. Designing a space that is both child-friendly and timeless. Maximizing privacy in a shared bathroom. Adding personality without making the space feel overly juvenile. The Renewed Space Design solutions: Repurposed a small walk-in closet in an adjacent bedroom to house a stackable washer and dryer accessible from the hallway. Built a new, larger closet on the opposite side to maintain bedroom storage. Installed spacious base cabinets and drawers in each vanity area, ensuring sufficient storage for all three sisters. Used feminine yet subtle plaid patterned mosaic tiles, neutral countertops with light movement, and soft tones to ensure longevity and adaptability. Improved the Jill-and-Jill layout with two separate vanity areas and a shared toilet and shower zone. Kept pocket doors for enhanced privacy and space efficiency. Incorporated blingy light fixtures, decorative mirrors, and hooks for towels to strike the perfect balance between fun and elegance. This refreshed bathroom blends thoughtful functionality with a timeless aesthetic, meeting the immediate needs of a busy household while creating a space that can adapt to the family’s future.

“House with the Common View,” Wallingford AWARDS: Best of Wallingford, Built Green Hammer Award Description Artistic, sustainable addition to a small Wallingford bungalow which was necessary to allow a growing family to continue to thrive in a neighborhood that they love. Challenge Growing family needed more space but they didn’t want to move. They knew that they would have to build up but don’t want to block views or ruin the experience for their neighbor friends. Because of the size and shape of the lot, there were also permitting and structuring challenges. Inspiration We found inspiration in the family and their commitment to the place, neighborhood and friends. We wanted to create a house that is not only functional and respectful of the neighbor’s view, but that actually gives back to the neighborhood. We had to lean in hard in the design process to pull all of that off. Solutions + Innovations We engaged in a meticulous design process included literal “boots on the ground” elements like standing on the property with sticks to measure the neighbor’s view. We not only maintained that view but enhanced it by giving the neighbors a view of green roof gardens on 4 sides of the house. To support that work, we had to rebuild the foundation. As an amenity for the neighborhood at large, we created a rain path that channeled into living wall and structured rain garden that was adjacent to the sidewalk. How is it sustainable? We salvaged or repurposed all of the materials that we could, including salvaging painted shingles on from house and repurposing them for a tiny play house (which also has a green roof). The old beams from basement became a cabinet in the new bathroom. We also used orchard-salvaged walnut which matched the horizontal grain already existing in the kitchen. We economized on space, saving the footprint on the main floor, and only added 600 feet upstairs which house two bedrooms and one batch. We used casework to create walls, used the stairs for part of the cabinets, and built walk-n cabinets, creating adaptable space for long term needs. More adaptable space included a sharable bathroom/wetroom which is functional for both adults and kids. We developed a green roof system, rain gardens, and a green wall along sidewalk. We took the opportunity to improve the envelope, insulating outside the building before the siding went back on. We also incorporated solar into the design, created the opportunity for natural daylighting all day on upper level and stairwell, as well as using resin-based eco countertops.

This presentation outlines the thoughtfully designed elements which were meticulously integrated to maximize entertaining space within the constraints of the property. The project commenced with relocating the pool to the furthest reaches of the property, respecting property line setbacks to amplify the area available for entertainment. Adjacent to the back door, a covered built-in kitchen and intimate seating area offer protection from both bugs and the scorching afternoon sun, thanks to a convenient drop-down screen. The 18'x36' pool serves as the focal point, backed by an 18" masonry wall adorned with LED lighting accents. Behind this backdrop, a hedge of long-blooming hydrangeas and espalier-shaped European hornbeams complements the formal design, infusing the space with timeless elegance. The pool deck features a sturdy 5" rebar-reinforced concrete overlay with Valders Dove White and gray stone laid in a herringbone pattern (5'x18" pieces). To address stormwater retention, a large drywell behind the pool was repurposed as the base for a putting green, encircled by permeable gravel and stone coping. Landscape lighting makes it perfect for endless fun, day and night. To minimize the “fence feeling” and to distinguish the detached garage driveway, a grand outdoor fireplace and wall were constructed. This space also includes an outdoor TV and speaker system. A pergola, built from large steel I-beams and cedar, provides respite from the summer sun. For continuity and aesthetic impact, the hydrangea hedge extends the entire length of the property, maximizing the use of the narrow 36" side. The front of the property is equally striking. A heated concrete driveway, saw-cut into 5'x5' squares, provides a grand entrance. The front porch and walkway feature heated, randomly patterned bluestone, expertly set on a concrete sub-base. Two sets of garden walls enclose the front yard, with the closest to the front door boasting three water scuppers and a pondless waterfall system, creating a captivating ambiance for arriving guests. The property's front and rear areas are adorned with various planting beds and containers, which are seasonally adapted to ensure a vibrant landscape year-round. Formal, columnar trees, such as slender silhouette sweetgum, columnar tulip trees, sheared European hornbeams, and shaped tricolor beech, were chosen to harmonize with the property's architecture. With three interacting spring systems plus 35 hand-created layers of our finest natural materials, we want to take you to a new level of both sleep and wakefulness. Hästens Herlewing is based on the same advanced spring system developed for Hästens 2000T. The springs in the middle mattress are affixed one by one and react individually to pressure. The effect is outstanding: Two people together in the same bed lie in their own sphere, without the movements of one disturbing the other. And there’s more. In the base of the bed are two further spring systems. Carefully adapted to each other, they provide every part of your body with the support it needs.
