Our clients, a family of professionals with 2 young kids, approached us to renovate their early 2000’s Toronto home to make it better suit the needs of their family. Although they were happy with the Kitchen layout, they requested that we update the existing cabinetry, and add additional cabinetry for increased storage. In the Laundry Room, they needed a storage solution for cleaning materials, and an updated laundry sink. They wanted the Basement to be a comfortable family space to spend time together, and for the kids to have a space to play. The Kitchen cabinets were dated and starting to fall apart, and the Master En-Suite was dated and awkwardly shaped, with a tight walk-in shower. In the Basement, the HVAC bulkhead was awkward and unsightly, and the space was not ideal for the kids to play, due to outdated carpeting, and a lack of storage space for their toys. We spent time getting to know our clients to design a space that optimized functionality and comfort for their family. In the Kitchen, we kept the existing layout, but added a tall cabinet for pantry and broom storage. A new island was built with a space to accommodate a built-in microwave, to keep it from cluttering the countertop. The new white oak tall cabinets and island cabinets were complimented by light coloured marble-looking quartz countertops and the handmade subway tile backsplash for a fresh, updated look. In the Master Ensuite, we replaced the large, dated deck-mounted tub with a semi-freestanding tub, tucked nicely into the corner. The extra space this created allowed us to add a walk-in shower without the awkward angle that had existed prior to the renovation. The new walk-in shower featured a ceiling mounted showerhead, and a useful ledge for toiletries. We even had enough space to add a bonus make-up table to match the new double vanity. Both were custom built to be floating for a modern look, and easier maintenance. In the Laundry Room, we installed the washer and dryer side by side, instead of stacked. This allowed for a long working countertop and upper storage cabinets that were custom built. Additionally, a hanging rack installed above the sink is perfect for drying small items, and the adjustable shelves and dividers in the custom built cabinetry will provide plenty of convenient space to store cleaning materials. In the Basement, we widened the bulkhead to allow us to center the wall-mounted TV, and added custom media cabinets with floating shelves to accommodate electronics. The space was made more comfortable for the kids to play with new vinyl heated flooring, and tall cabinets with adjustable shelves, dividers, and deep drawers to keep all of their toys organized. I’m always excited to work with new clients who were drawn to me by my style of past projects and online presence. When I first met with them, I immediately felt comfortable and knew this was going to be a great project. They were very open to suggestions and requested only a few things – TEXTURE, a seating area for TV viewing/gaming, a clean design without clutter and an overall well-put-together feeling. They told me not to hold back on my design vision, so we just went for it! I had a custom ceiling height headboard constructed in a velvet for drama. We splurged on luxurious bedding with tons of layers and texture. On that same wall I had shimmery, grey grass cloth installed for added texture. Custom, black out, silk Roman shades, layered with pleated sheers were hung. Grey-washed hardwood flooring was installed. I had a custom grey built-in installed in the niche to serve as a dresser and TV storage. Recessed lighting, reading lights and crystal pendants were added. A soft grey was painted on the walls with a contrasting darker slate on the ceiling. The rear wall of the shower is clad in floor-toceiling slabs of light blue quartzite, creating a dramatic focal point visible from the bedroom. This quartzite extends seamlessly to form a sculptural bench within the shower, which transitions outward into a custom sink. Beneath the sink, two wood drawers provide discreet storage. The remaining walls are finished in soft beige Moroccan tadelakt plaster, adding a warm contrast to the cool tones of the quartzite. Our clients in Tower Lakes, IL, needed more storage and functionality from their kitchen. They were primarily focused on finding the right combination of cabinets, shelves, and drawers that fit all their cookware, flatware, and appliances. They wanted a brighter, bigger space with a natural cooking flow and plenty of storage. Soffits and crown molding needed to be removed to make the kitchen feel larger. Redesign elements included: relocating the fridge, adding a baking station and coffee bar, and placing the microwave in the kitchen island. Advance Design Studio’s Claudia Pop offered functional, creative, and unique solutions to the homeowners’ problems. Our clients wanted a unique kitchen that was not completely white, a balance of design and function. Claudia offered functional, creative, and unique solutions to Chad and Karen’s kitchen design challenges. The first thing to go was soffits. Today, most kitchens can benefit from the added height and space; removing soffits is nearly always step one. Steely gray-blue was the color of choice for a freshly unique look bringing a sophisticated-looking space to wrap around the fresh new kitchen. Cherry cabinetry in a true brown stain compliments the stormy accents with sharp contrasting white Cambria quartz top balancing out the space with a dramatic flair. “We wanted something unique and special in this space, something none of the neighbors would have,” said Claudia. The dramatic veined Cambria countertops continue upward into a backsplash behind three complimentary open shelves. These countertops provide visual texture and movement in the kitchen. The kitchen includes two larder cabinets for both the coffee bar and baking station. The kitchen is now functional and unique in design. “When we design a new kitchen space, as designers, we are always looking for ways to balance interesting design elements with practical functionality,” Claudia said. “This kitchen’s new design is not only way more functional but is stunning in a way a piece of art can catch one’s attention.” Decorative mullions with mirrored inserts sit atop dual sentinel pantries flanking the new refrigerator, while a 48″ dual fuel Wolf range replaced the island cooktop and double oven. The new microwave is cleverly hidden within the island, eliminating the cluttered counter and attention-grabbing wall of stainless steel from the previous space. The family room was completely renovated, including a beautifully functional entertainment bar with the same combination of woods and stone as the kitchen and coffee bar. Mesh inserts instead of plain glass add visual texture while revealing pristine glassware. Handcrafted built-ins surround the fireplace. Our clients immediately recognized the potential of the home located in a highly sought-after section of Allentown. The dated kitchen needed significant rethinking but our clients knew it could be turned into something beautiful and inspiring. And, indeed, they were right. Busy professionals with an active social life, our clients wanted an inviting space to host both intimate dinner parties and large social gatherings. With this in mind, we worked to reimagine the flow of traffic from one room to another. Extraneous walls and a desk inconveniently positioned in the middle of the main kitchen thoroughfare needed to be removed and tight workspace aisles and narrow passageways demanded widening to help alleviate the problem. In addition to the kitchen’s flow concerns, the dark and dated space needed brightening. The wall between the kitchen and family room was opened up to unite the two spaces allowing more light into both rooms. Windows were also added at the sink wall so the room could be flooded with bright morning sun, while also offering a beautiful view of the park below. All-white cabinetry was selected to help reflect the additional light. An unfortunate challenge of expanding the windows meant there were fewer wall cabinets to store dishes. We turned to the island where we installed large dish drawers featuring wood pegged interiors. We also relied on wall-to-counter cabinets for additional storage to help keep the room clutter-free as appliances were neatly tucked behind doors. A new, built-in pantry was also added. The finished kitchen unites traditional with today and elegance with comfort to ensure perfection. We revamped this client's kitchen, dining area, pantry and laundry room. The homeowners cook a lot and they like to entertain, so they wanted a cleaner, more open feel. The kitchen felt cluttered, the sink was not convenient, they wanted a bar area, more outlets, smooth flooring and more lighting! We removed all existing finishes and took it down to drywall and the concrete slab and started over. We moved the sink out of the corner, installed ceiling height cabinetry giving them additional storage and all new Vicostone Graphite countertops with a contrasting Summer Drought 2"x8" glass backsplash. The water heater that was originally located between the laundry room and the pantry was moved outside, allowing for more kitchen space. Also, the footprint of the original walk-in laundry room was decreased to a laundry closet with bi-fold doors, allowing for even more kitchen space. Gaining the additional square footage in the kitchen allowed for a 6 1/2' island. The sink was moved to the longer side of the kitchen and a new window was added above the new sink, Recessed lights were added, along with a new light fixture above the kitchen table instantly brightening up this space. New Aberdeen wood floors was laid in the kitchen with new tile in the laundry room. To finish it off, we replaced the cooktop with a smooth electric cooktop and the clients are ready to entertain! This custom swing-out shoe rack was the perfect solution for organizing shoes while adding additional storage under the steps. We added backs to the open steps to conceal clutter.

DESIGN CHALLENGES ADDRESSED: To anyone who may be reading this project overview, I do hope you'll have the opportunity to have a look at the 'before' photo of this space. It's quite a transformation! Our homeowners purchased their condo at the beach several years ago. As shown in the 'before' photo, the casual dining area was a dark and dated space with unsightly paneled walls, heavy faux ceiling beams and odds and ends for furniture. It was cut off from the kitchen and did not lend itself for entertaining. Everything felt cramped and cluttered throughout the condo, especially this space. The client's vision was for a relaxed and welcoming dining space that would allow them to comfortably host friends and family. DESIGN SOLUTIONS PROVIDED: The entire condo was taken down to the stud. The faux beams were edited out and the ceiling raised. The heavy out-dated paneling was replaced with fresh clean walls that were painted in a calming creamy sand tone throughout the entire condo. The wall that once separated the kitchen and dining area was completely removed. This space now felt far more spacious and open. The existing heavy and out dated furniture was replaced with stylish functional pieces. Great thought was given to the size, scale and textiles used. A round table with a wonderful archectural base in a richly textured weathered driftwood finish was selected. With the option of adding an extension leaf (which converted the table into a generous rectangle) the homeowners now had the desired space to host a sizable group of guests without feeling crowded as before. Dining chairs with a 'x' back wood frame in a playful shade of kiwi and crisp striped cushions completed the look. Clean line sconces in a rich linen textile were added on either of the window for soft ambient lighting. The overall effect of the renovation was quite dramatic and the clients were thrilled with the results. This casual dining area went from being dark and dated to light and airy and is now a wonderful space that is both inviting and relaxing along with being a great place to entertain. this young family wanted to updated their super traditional kitchen to better suit their families way of living. Adding the large hutch with beverage drawers created an area for the daily clutter to gather without ending up in the working area of the kitchen. The convenient walk in pantry gives tons of added storage area. The small bar between the kitchen and dining room allows for ease of entertaining. The formerly ho-hum powder room is now paneled and wallpapered and is truly a special moment off the family room.

Having been referred to San Luis Kitchen by the mother of a co-worker, this month’s homeowners came to our showroom with high hopes. Tried and true do-it-yourselfers, the couple had already knocked out a wall to create a pass-thru between their kitchen and living room. However life intervened and they were stalled with raw drywall and partially demolished cabinets. Hence, the recognition of need for professional remodeling help! An initial interview with San Luis Kitchen’s design team revealed a few things that had to change. First, this busy professional couple had been living for years without a dishwasher! “NO more!” exclaimed the wife. Secondly, there was a marked lack of convenient workspace in this small kitchen. The workable counter space was limited to one corner of the room between the sink and the range – the microwave was filling the counter to the left of the sink and there was no counter at all to the right of the range. To add insult to injury, a room divider that had a nice large top was basically unusable – it was in an awkward location for prep work (facing the dining room with your back to the kitchen), had an old wood counter that was aesthetically appealing but impractical for food prep, and just ended up covered in clutter. Thirdly, the work area of the kitchen was blah, boring and uninspiring – when standing at the sink you stared at a blank wall and the range faced the unfinished drywall from the stalled remodel – not a place to spend quality time! There were some interesting plus points to the existing space that could be capitalized upon. The homeowner absolutely loved her range – a freestanding 30” unit with double stacked ovens. She definitely wanted to reuse it. Another plus was the placement of the refrigerator. It was recessed into a niche built into the connecting garage. This allowed the spacious deep refrigerator to remain unimposing in the kitchen – it wasn’t sticking out in the space the way fridges often are! And now to the redesign and the new kitchen. We decided to remove the center room divider and integrate the kitchen with the dining area. We gave the homeowners lots of storage space by designing a dining area hutch that has four tall pantry cabinets in addition to a display area and two banks of nice deep drawers. We kept the refrigerator recessed into the garage (pulling it forward a bit to align with the hutch) and added a decorative open shelf above it. Next, we moved the new farmhouse style stainless sink to face the living area pass-thru (the designated clean-up person can now interact with guests who are relaxing after dinner) and added a small dishwasher to the left of the sink and a double pull-out trash cabinet to the right of it – all the essentials for clean-up – and counter space to boot! We also tucked a narrow tray storage cabinet into the corner next to the dishwasher. The range now centers on the end wall of the kitchen with a microwave hood and cabinetry detail above creating a focal point for the kitchen. On either side of the range are swing-out shelves to access the base corners – space was tight here, we custom sized the cabinets and squeezed them in. A bank of four drawers is located under the window extending the counter around the corner so that the homeowners now have food prep space both left and right of the range. In the upper cabinets to the left of the microwave we installed a swing-out spice pantry for organized storage and easy access to essential items. Their Kitchenaid mixer lives on the counter here with adjustable shelf storage above it – this corner has become a bake center. And there is now a designated coffee space in the other corner featuring a diagonal wall corner cabinet and decorative corner mug shelf. In conclusion, San Luis Kitchen and these intrepid homeowners took an old boring white kitchen and transformed it into a whole new room. Now the kitchen complements the up-beat and energetic lifestyle of its users.

Adjacent to the range, a pull-out utensil holder keeps cooking tools organized and within easy reach. A hidden roll-out cabinet neatly stores a folding step stool for convenient access to upper cabinets. The kitchen also includes a lift-up appliance drawer designed to raise heavy countertop appliances, such as a KitchenAid mixer, to working height with ease, helping reduce lifting and countertop clutter. Around the corner, floating shelves framed by full-height decorative tile create an elegant display area that adds both storage and visual interest to the space. Thoughtful details like crown molding, layered finishes, and custom storage features make this kitchen both beautiful and exceptionally practical for daily life.

DESIGN CHALLENGES ADDRESSED: To anyone who may be reading this project overview, I do hope you'll have the opportunity to have a look at the 'before' photo of this space. It's quite a transformation! Our homeowners purchased their condo at the beach several years ago. As shown in the 'before' photo, the casual dining area was a dark and dated space with unsightly paneled walls, heavy faux ceiling beams and odds and ends for furniture. It was cut off from the kitchen and did not lend itself for entertaining. Everything felt cramped and cluttered throughout the condo, especially this space. The client's vision was for a relaxed and welcoming dining space that would allow them to comfortably host friends and family. DESIGN SOLUTIONS PROVIDED: The entire condo was taken down to the stud. The faux beams were edited out and the ceiling raised. The heavy out-dated paneling was replaced with fresh clean walls that were painted in a calming creamy sand tone throughout the entire condo. The wall that once separated the kitchen and dining area was completely removed. This space now felt far more spacious and open. The existing heavy and out dated furniture was replaced with stylish functional pieces. Great thought was given to the size, scale and textiles used. A round table with a wonderful archectural base in a richly textured weathered driftwood finish was selected. With the option of adding an extension leaf (which converted the table into a generous rectangle) the homeowners now had the desired space to host a sizable group of guests without feeling crowded as before. Dining chairs with a 'x' back wood frame in a playful shade of kiwi and crisp striped cushions completed the look. Clean line sconces in a rich linen textile were added on either of the window for soft ambient lighting. The overall effect of the renovation was quite dramatic and the clients were thrilled with the results. This casual dining area went from being dark and dated to light and airy and is now a wonderful space that is both inviting and relaxing along with being a great place to entertain. TEXTURAL VIBES Time Frame: 2 Months // Design Fee: $1,875 Evan and his wife Karen were looking for professional help in designing/decorating their master bedroom in Rancho Cucamonga, CA. I was not referred to them, but they were impressed by my website, reviews and pictures of past projects. I’m always excited to work with new clients who were drawn to me by my style of past projects and online presence. When I first met with them, I immediately felt comfortable and knew this was going to be a great project. They were very open to suggestions and requested only a few things – TEXTURE, a seating area for TV viewing/gaming, a clean design without clutter and an overall well-put-together feeling. They told me not to hold back on my design vision, so we just went for it! I had a custom ceiling height headboard constructed in a velvet for drama. We splurged on luxurious bedding with tons of layers and texture. On that same wall I had shimmery, grey grass cloth installed for added texture. Custom, black out, silk Roman shades, layered with pleated sheers were hung. Grey-washed hardwood flooring was installed. I had a custom grey built-in installed in the niche to serve as a dresser and TV storage. Recessed lighting, reading lights and crystal pendants were added. A soft grey was painted on the walls with a contrasting darker slate on the ceiling. An over-sized wall mirror, wool rugs, metal-wrapped furniture, a custom sofa and ottoman with nailhead trim and professional photos of the couple framed in silver with linen mats tied everything together.

When a client tells us they’re a mid-century collector and long for a kitchen design unlike any other we are only too happy to oblige. This kitchen is saturated in mid-century charm and its custom features make it difficult to pin-point our favorite aspect! Cabinetry We had the pleasure of partnering with one of our favorite Denver cabinet shops to make our walnut dreams come true! We were able to include a multitude of custom features in this kitchen including frosted glass doors in the island, open cubbies, a hidden cutting board, and great interior cabinet storage. But what really catapults these kitchen cabinets to the next level is the eye-popping angled wall cabinets with sliding doors, a true throwback to the magic of the mid-century kitchen. Streamline brushed brass cabinetry pulls provided the perfect lux accent against the handsome walnut finish of the slab cabinetry doors. Tile Amidst all the warm clean lines of this mid-century kitchen we wanted to add a splash of color and pattern, and a funky backsplash tile did the trick! We utilized a handmade yellow picket tile with a high variation to give us a bit of depth; and incorporated randomly placed white accent tiles for added interest and to compliment the white sliding doors of the angled cabinets, helping to bring all the materials together. Counter We utilized a quartz along the counter tops that merged lighter tones with the warm tones of the cabinetry. The custom integrated drain board (in a starburst pattern of course) means they won’t have to clutter their island with a large drying rack. As an added bonus, the cooktop is recessed into the counter, to create an installation flush with the counter surface. Stair Rail Not wanting to miss an opportunity to add a touch of geometric fun to this home, we designed a custom steel handrail. The zig-zag design plays well with the angles of the picket tiles and the black finish ties in beautifully with the black metal accents in the kitchen. Lighting We removed the original florescent light box from this kitchen and replaced it with clean recessed lights with accents of recessed undercabinet lighting and a terrifically vintage fixture over the island that pulls together the black and brushed brass metal finishes throughout the space. This kitchen has transformed into a strikingly unique space creating the perfect home for our client’s mid-century treasures.
