We gutted the old kitchen and opened it up to the living room. We added all new wood flooring, refinishing the old and the new for a seamless transition. Other aspects of this renovation was adding a back entry from the kitchen, and brightening the space with recessed lights, pendants over the center island and sink, and inner cabinet lighting combined with under cabinet lighting. It all got started by excavating the front and left side of the house and attaching a wrap-around stone porch. Key design attributes include a black metal roof, large tapered columns, blue and grey random style flag stone, beaded stain ceiling paneling and an octagonal seating area on the left side of this porch. The front porch has a wide stairway and another set of stairs leads to the back yard. All exterior walls of the home were modified with new headers to allow much larger custom-made windows, new front doors garage doors, and French side and back doors. A custom-designed mahogany front door with leaded glass provides more light and offers a wider entrance into the home’s living area. Design challenges included removing the entire face of the home and then adding new insulation, Tyvek and Hardiplank siding. The use of high-efficiency low-e windows makes the home air tight. The Arts & Crafts design touches include the front gable over the front porch, the prairie-style grill pattern on the windows and doors, the use of tapered columns sitting over stone columns and the leaded glass front door. Decorative exterior lighting provides the finishing touches to this look. Inside, custom woodwork, crown molding, custom glass cabinets and interior pillars carry the design. Upon entering the space, visitors face a large partition that separates the living area from a gourmet Arts & Crafts kitchen and dining room. The home’s signature space, the kitchen offers contrasting dark and light cherry cabinets. Wide plank hard wood floors, exotic granite counters and stainless steel professional-grade appliances make this a kitchen fit for any chef.

This contemporary conservatory located in Hamilton, Massachusetts features our solid Sapele mahogany custom glass roof system and Andersen 400 series casement windows and doors. Our client desired a space that would offer an outdoor feeling alongside unique and luxurious additions such as a corner fireplace and custom accent lighting. The combination of the full glass wall façade and hip roof design provides tremendous light levels during the day, while the fully functional fireplace and warm lighting creates an amazing atmosphere at night. This pairing is truly the best of both worlds and is exactly what our client had envisioned. Acting as the full service design/build firm, Sunspace Design, Inc. poured the full basement foundation for utilities and added storage. Our experienced craftsmen added an exterior deck for outdoor dining and direct access to the backyard. The new space has eleven operable windows as well as air conditioning and heat to provide year-round comfort. A new set of French doors provides an elegant transition from the existing house while also conveying light to the adjacent rooms. Sunspace Design, Inc. worked closely with the client and Siemasko + Verbridge Architecture in Beverly, Massachusetts to develop, manage and build every aspect of this beautiful project. Building this exceptional home cinema system in Westlake, TX was a pleasure from day one. Our clients have owned multiple home theaters, and wanted to step up the performance in this new media room. The construction of the room is heavily reinforced with 2x6s. The entire room has been insulated to keep the sound inside the room and minimize leakage to the rest of the house. The riser base for the back row of chairs was reinforced with wood screws, and was fully insulated. In addition, the walls have been sheetrocked with Quietrock. This treatment substantially keeps the sound from traveling between walls because of its high density coefficient. Because the media room is on the 2nd floor, a sound barrier was added to the floors to provide an additional layer of sound control within the room. The finished walls were treated with custom acoustic panels from Auralex. We applied absorptive, reflective and diffusive treatments throughout the room to create a well-balanced acoustic environment for music and movies. The interior designer brought in a faux painter to create a leather-like texture on the walls. She very creatively faux painted the acoustic cloth panels to match the leather look and feel of the room. A 7.2 complement of Triad speakers are optimally located within the room. The front three LCR speakers are positioned behind an acoustically transparent Stewart video screen. The four surround speakers are located in a horseshoe-shaped configuration and fully envelope the listener with all the subtle (and not-so-subtle) special effects. Two Triad Gold subwoofers are placed in the corners and are dialed into the room for maximum output and tautness of bass. Triad builds an in-wall speaker that is fully baffled which minimizes any sound loss through the walls, and the performance is outstanding. The electronics featured in this media room are cutting edge. A Wolf Cinema projector with a Variscope lens allows us to set up the most popular aspect ratios and project a brilliant light on a 143" diagonal screen. We utilized the latest pre/pro from Integra as well as Class D amplification from Bel Canto. The Integra incorporates Audyssey digital correction circuitry, which measures the room’s properties/acoustics and maximizes the sound in the room. The sources include an Oppo Blu ray player, AM/FM, DirecTV HD and AppleTV. The entire system is controlled by an RTI touchscreen remote for easy, intuitive control. The sound is effortless and it is a match made in heaven. The room consists of two rows of seating. The front row is a very comfortable pit seating group and the second row utilizes leather theater chairs. All of this leads to a well-appointed, acoustically superior media room.

Dybdahl Project: Servants’ Kitchen Redo Designer: Paul Dybdahl Designer’s Note: A burgeoning young family was quickly outgrowing this stately home’s servants’ kitchen. We created more space by removing the servants’ staircase and short hallway leading to the kitchen. We reoriented the mudroom entry from the garage and re-purposed a portion of the ample front closet, creating a sweet first floor powder room. We moved existing radiators to create two new 4’ wide openings into the kitchen. The original kitchen was quite cold in the winter, as was expected from a home built in 1913. We completely stripped the walls, ceilings and flooring to the original framing and added foam insulation, then tied a heated kitchen floor into the home’s hydronic heating system. I called the homeowner a couple days into a cold winter (0 degree day) to ask if she was comfortable in her new kitchen, which she replied, “Oh my goodness, I’m barefoot in the middle of winter!”. With the pending arrival of a beautiful baby girl, the homeowners of this 1928 Minneapolis Tudor wanted a basement that was conducive to a young child, but would still allow a place for family to gather and the occasional house guest. The original basement was typical; cold, lacking natural light with tiny, uncomfortably confined rooms and that “unique” basement smell. The goal was to reverse all of the ill effects of a rarely unappreciated space while increasing the performance of the older home. The frigid temperatures and wet, mildew odor was remedied by demolishing the entire slab floor and excavating to gain an extra six inches in ceiling height. It also allowed us to insulate to R-15, moisture proof under the new slab, install a drain tile and sump pump. Within the concrete slab is a hydronic, in-floor radiant heating system which further helps to add comfort to the space. Lastly, we also sprayed a closed-cell, expanding urethane foam on the inside of the foundation walls all the way to the first floor. To help bring more light down to the basement, we started by opening up the staircase on both sides. A curved wall bends light into the lower level while a countertop and cubbies below provide storage space for odds and ends. On the opposite wall, creatively placed cubbies provide places for paintings, ceramics and plants. We also removed the tiny 18” x 34” window on the south wall and installed a full-sized, high-efficiency, triple pane Pella egress window. To let lots of natural light into the window, we expanded the size of the cedar-lined egress well and included a built-in planter at the base to help bring life into an otherwise empty cavity. Small, unspecified spaces that became storage areas now have purpose. The areas are defined, yet open. Upon descending down the stairs, one is greeted by a large living room with curved walls, custom design media center, built-in daybed and bookshelves. Use of paint was important in the design. Naturally in older homes basements are going to have exposed beams, soffits and a whole gambit of nooks and crannies. Instead of disguising them, we played them up, which created a layer effect with the color. The color also adds a touch of playfulness which anyone, regardless of age, can enjoy. We scavenged the client’s garage and discovered that the previous homeowner kept the old, full-view glass front entry door in the garage. We re-installed the original glass knob and attached the door to sliding barn door hardware which was attached to the main structural beam of the lower level. On the other side of the door was the homeowners’ combined office and small fitness area. The office floor is a blend of thin strips of different colored cork. A built-in storage cabinet sits across from a site-built desk which forms to the curve of the dividing wall. A small, square hole in the curved wall provides a view to see who is coming down the stairs. Opposite of the office area and directly at the base of the stairs is a place for the homeowner’s treadmill. Hidden is the mechanical room, which is home to many green and energy efficient products. The washing machine is a low-water consumption unit while the dryer requires less energy to operate than most standard units. Both sit atop a checkerboard pattern of different colored VCT tiles. We also replaced the aging boiler, which only heated the first and second level, with a 95% efficient heat source for the entire house—including the basement. Behind the curved wall, the bathroom is conveniently located. A large, custom built no-formaldehyde added vanity supports the slab of remnant granite countertop. A piece of eco-resin wall panel, embedded with organic material, contains water in the shower and blends beautifully with the updated colors. Tucked under the stairs, we installed a dual-flush, low-water consumption toilet. Through creative space planning, we packed a lot of into a rather small space.
