2013 NKBA MEDIUM BATH When this young couple purchased their nearly 25-year-old colonial, the master bathroom was the first thing they wanted to change. Drab looking with worn out cabinets and a shower that was too small, it didn’t fit their modern vision for the space. Working with Michael Nash Design, Build & Homes, they came up with a plan to enlarge the bathroom, stealing space from the master bedroom. The new design includes a much larger shower, the addition of a walk-in shower and more. And the results are nothing less than stunning. A new, frameless glass shower stall is equipped with a steam unit, body sprays, rain shower head, and thermostatic valve and control. A double-sided fireplace overlooks a large whirlpool tub (also visible from the master bedroom). Modern wall hanger espresso finish vanities are topped with a marble top and his and her tumbled marble vessel sinks. Two tall linen cabinets bookend the vanity for additional storage. A recessed mirror with back lighting effect was also installed. Large 20” × 20” white marble floor and walls with dark metallic tile were placed on featured walls for added effects. The floors in both the bathroom and closet are heated. An enlarged doorway from bathroom to walk-in closet offers double French glass doors which are pocketed for better traffic flow. Built-in closet systems are his and hers with matching cherry espresso finish cabinetry covered by obscure glass doors and a touch pad lighting system. The middle island features shoe racks and tie and socks storage. Clean, streamlined and functional, the homeowners love this award-winning space.

We gave this rather dated farmhouse some dramatic upgrades that brought together the feminine with the masculine, combining rustic wood with softer elements. In terms of style her tastes leaned toward traditional and elegant and his toward the rustic and outdoorsy. The result was the perfect fit for this family of 4 plus 2 dogs and their very special farmhouse in Ipswich, MA. Character details create a visual statement, showcasing the melding of both rustic and traditional elements without too much formality. The new master suite is one of the most potent examples of the blending of styles. The bath, with white carrara honed marble countertops and backsplash, beaded wainscoting, matching pale green vanities with make-up table offset by the black center cabinet expand function of the space exquisitely while the salvaged rustic beams create an eye-catching contrast that picks up on the earthy tones of the wood. The luxurious walk-in shower drenched in white carrara floor and wall tile replaced the obsolete Jacuzzi tub. Wardrobe care and organization is a joy in the massive walk-in closet complete with custom gliding library ladder to access the additional storage above. The space serves double duty as a peaceful laundry room complete with roll-out ironing center. The cozy reading nook now graces the bay-window-with-a-view and storage abounds with a surplus of built-ins including bookcases and in-home entertainment center. You can’t help but feel pampered the moment you step into this ensuite. The pantry, with its painted barn door, slate floor, custom shelving and black walnut countertop provide much needed storage designed to fit the family’s needs precisely, including a pull out bin for dog food. During this phase of the project, the powder room was relocated and treated to a reclaimed wood vanity with reclaimed white oak countertop along with custom vessel soapstone sink and wide board paneling. Design elements effectively married rustic and traditional styles and the home now has the character to match the country setting and the improved layout and storage the family so desperately needed. : This kitchen required a major remodel. The existing space was as unattractive as it was nonfunctional. Old non-working appliances, a dead-end space with no flow to adjacent rooms, poor lighting, and a sewer line running through the middle of the cabinets. Instead of being a haven for this working couple and extended family, the space was a nightmare. The designer was retained to create spaces for family gatherings to enjoy cooking and baking, provide storage for daily needs as well as bulk good storage and allow the kitchen to be the center piece of the home with improved access and flow throughout. Additions to the Wishlist were a mud room, laundry (not in the garage) and a place for the cats. A small addition created enough room to accommodate an island/peninsula layout suitable for baking and casual eating, a large range, generous storage both below and above the countertop. A full-size microwave convection oven built into the island provides additional baking capacity. Dish storage is in a customized drawer to make access easier for the petite client. A large framed pantry for food and essentials is located next to the island/peninsula. The old closet which contained the water meter and shut off valves now provides storage for brooms, vacuum cleaners, cleaning supplies and bulk goods. The ceiling heights in the entire home were low so in the addition a vaulted ceiling aligning with adjacent sunroom visually opened the room. This reimagined room is now the heart of the home.

Although no floor space was added to this small kitchen, the makeover visually and physically expanded storage capabilities. The white palette made the space lighter and look larger but the most significant change was claiming part of a nearby dining room closet for kitchen cabinets, adding 18” deep cabinetry for needed additional storage. The new microwave was placed here to put it at a more accessible height, with drawers below the counter for convenient access. A new low-profile, pullout vent hood over the stove was added with a new induction stove with the capability of dividing the oven space into two ovens for busy days. A 6” deep pantry takes little space but provides one-item depth storage that makes it easy to see what is on hand and access it. The existing Corian countertop, corner sink, backsplash, and integrated drainboard were kept from an earlier update, although a custom, hand painted tile insert was added behind the stove for interest. A new porcelain tile floor, new wall color, all new appliances, new recessed and under cabinet lighting all contribute to make this kitchen the homeowners’ dream space. The two beautiful blue countertop towers that frame the modern wood hood and cooktop are two intricately designed larder cabinets built to meet the homeowner’s exact needs. The larder cabinet on the left is designed as a beverage center with apothecary drawers designed for housing beverage stir sticks, sugar packets, creamers, and other misc. coffee and home bar supplies. A wine glass rack and shelves provides optimal storage for a full collection of glassware while a power supply in the back helps power coffee & espresso (machines, blenders, grinders and other small appliances that could be used for daily beverage creations. The roll-out shelf makes it easier to fill clean and operate each appliance while also making it easy to put away. Pocket doors tuck out of the way and into the cabinet so you can easily leave open for your household or guests to access, but easily shut the cabinet doors and conceal when you’re ready to tidy up. Beneath the beverage center larder is a drawer designed with 2 layers of multi-tasking storage for utensils and additional beverage supplies storage with space for tea packets, and a full drawer of K-Cup storage. The cabinet below uses powered roll-out shelves to create the perfect breakfast center with power for a toaster and divided storage to organize all the daily fixings and pantry items the household needs for their morning routine. On the right, the second larder is the ultimate hub and center for the homeowner’s baking tasks. A wide roll-out shelf helps store heavy small appliances like a KitchenAid Mixer while making them easy to use, clean, and put away.
