The addition creates an L-Shaped floor plan and boasts a spacious master suite. The goal was to incorporate as much natural light as possible, and create bedroom access to the backyard. The use of white and the light weight mid-century furniture create a light and airy space that seamlessly blends with the outdoors.

This addition came about from the client's desire to renovate and enlarge their kitchen. The open floor plan allows seamless movement between the kitchen and the back patio, and is a straight shot through to the mudroom and to the driveway.

This photo captures the welcoming entryway of the Renovation/Additions in Northern New Mexico project by Gayla Bechtol Architect:
Handcrafted details: The carved wood front door and exposed log columns emphasize craftsmanship rooted in regional traditions.
Stone foundation and steps: Locally sourced stone grounds the structure in its landscape, providing both durability and textural richness.
Stucco walls with bright accents: The warm adobe-toned plaster contrasts beautifully with the bold blue window trim, adding a touch of vibrancy.
Curved portal roofline: The sweeping porch roof softens the geometry and creates an inviting flow, blending protection with elegance.
Integration with site: Natural flagstone paving and native plantings transition seamlessly from the home to the garden, reinforcing the home’s dialogue with nature.
This entryway embodies the essence of Northern New Mexico architecture—rooted in place, handcrafted, and deeply connected to its environment.

The Johnson-Thompson house is the oldest house in Winchester, MA, dating back to the early 1700s. The addition and renovation expanded the structure and added three full bathrooms including a spacious two-story master bathroom, as well as an additional bedroom for the daughter. The kitchen was moved and expanded into a large open concept kitchen and family room, creating additional mud-room and laundry space. But with all the new improvements, the original historic fabric and details remain. The moldings are copied from original pieces, salvaged bricks make up the kitchen backsplash. Wood from the barn was reclaimed to make sliding barn doors. The wood fireplace mantels were carefully restored and original beams are exposed throughout the house. It's a wonderful example of modern living and historic preservation.

Our plan was to create an addition on the north and east side of the house to increase the kitchen footprint, add a family room, mudroom, powder room and first floor laundry.
We also added a new second floor addition with three bedrooms and two full bathrooms over the existing living room and kitchen addition below. We built a large two car garage attached by the new mudroom.
In order to maximize the footprint and add a modern element to the design, the garage was designed parallel to the property line. We created a large front porch where they could gather and hangout with their neighbors, which was important to them.
