Home Remodeling Project Overview This extensive home remodeling project transformed a dated and inefficient layout into a functional, open, and aesthetically cohesive living space. The original layout had several challenges: • A kitchen with limited storage, no cabinets on the window side, a sink facing the wall, and a range crammed into the corner. The pantry closet was too deep and impractical. • A living room that couldn’t accommodate furniture without interfering with traffic flow. • A front foyer with wasted space. • A claustrophobic hallway toilet room without a sink, located near the laundry room. The Remodeling Concept The scope of this project extended well beyond the kitchen. We proposed several layout options to address issues in all adjacent spaces, ultimately implementing a plan that: • Removed two walls and moved doorways. • Replaced the kitchen window. • Converted the hallway toilet room into a storage space. • Installed pocket doors to separate the laundry hallway from the living room. Kitchen Transformation • Open Concept: By removing the wall between the kitchen and dining room, the two spaces became a seamless open area. • New Layout: Cabinets were relocated to the window side for more storage and natural light. A central island with storage and seating was added, and a coffee bar was installed in the dining room. • Updated Pantry: The deep pantry closet was converted into a pullout pantry with a cabinet front for better accessibility. • Design Details: Off-white kitchen cabinets pair beautifully with a light green island. Warm white quartz counters and an artisan tile backsplash complete the look. Dining Room • Expanded Space: Most of the wall separating the dining room and foyer was removed, creating a more spacious area while still accommodating all furniture thanks to careful measurements. Living Room Improvements • Optimized Layout: Moving doorways and installing pocket doors allowed for better furniture placement, including a sofa that doesn’t interfere with traffic flow. • Fireplace Upgrade: The brick fireplace was updated with a three-dimensional staggered stone veneer in a color matching the kitchen cabinets, creating a cohesive look. A TV was installed above the fireplace at a comfortable viewing angle. Additional Updates • New Flooring: All remodeled rooms now feature updated flooring. • Ceilings: Popcorn ceilings were replaced with smooth, flat finishes, complemented by recessed lighting. • Walls: Fresh paint throughout the space, with an accent wall in the living room matching the light green of the kitchen island. • Lighting: Stylish sconces were added for a touch of elegance. Wine Cellars come in many forms and styles. Our client’s had studied different styles of designs for many years as well as collecting over 1200 bottles of wine in all shapes and sizes. After living in their new Leawood home for a few years it was time to address an update on the lower level and design and build a wine cellar that was perfect for their use.

The combination of the knotty, blue-gray alder base cabinets combined with the clean white wall cabinets reveal mixing these rustic Finnish touches with the modern. The leaded glass on the upper cabinetry was selected so our client can display their personal collection from Finland. Mixing black modern hardware and fixtures with the handmade, light, and bright backsplash tile make this kitchen a timeless show stopper. This project was done in collaboration with Susan O'Brian from EcoLux Interiors.

This was the another opportunity to work with one of our favorite clients on one of her projects. This time she wanted to completely revamp a recently purchased make-shift revenue property and convert it to a legal three-suiter maximizing rental income in a prime rental area close to NAIT. The mid-fifties semi-bungalow was in quite poor condition, so it was a challenging opportunity to address the various structural deficiencies while keeping the project at a reasonable budget. We gutted and opened up all three floors, removed a poorly constructed rear addition, and created three comfortable suites on the three separate floors. Compare the before and after pictures - a complete transformation!

This Primary Suite renovation was designed to enhance both functionality and aesthetics, creating a luxurious yet practical retreat. The original floor plan presented several challenges, including inefficient space utilization, lack of storage, and outdated design elements that no longer met the homeowner’s needs. To address these concerns, the new layout was carefully planned to improve flow, maximize storage, and incorporate modern conveniences while maintaining a timeless appeal.

PHOTOGRAPHER: Jason Meyer of Feinkkopf Photography DESCRIPTION: Originally designed in 1963, Leunter Commons exemplified mid-century modern architecture. While the building had undergone updates over the decades, there were many factors that necessitated a renovation. These challenges were addressed while acknowledging the original building’s architecture and context. The new construction was designed as an extension, rather than an addition, by maintaining the original material palette, rhythm, proportions, sightlines, and the expression of horizontality of the existing building. JURY COMMENTS: This project is simple and self-confident, commensurate with the existing building. The enhancements are function driven influenced by the architecture of the building. The solution shows great restraint and did not overreach. The project is transformational while positively engaging its campus context. There is a very nice resonance between the building and the program.

This modern townhome in Vaughan received some mid-century modern flair and some really fun wallpaper. The large open concept living room was challenging in terms of creating a successful layout and we addressed it by bringing a large sectional closer to the center of the room rather than anchoring it against walls. Plenty of circulation space for a sideboard with a beautiful vinyl player, a collection of tall architectural prints and an eight foot tall floor lamp bring the eye up a double story living space. Fun wallpaper creates a long feature wall in the living and dining area with a geometric pattern that brings some movement to the room and is also mirrored in the kitchen backsplash and sideboard veneer. We designed a bedroom with the perfect shade of blue that will age nicely with our client’s young son along with a calming study perfect for getting some work done.

The goal of the project was to address the physical and perceptual challenges of aging in place while preserving and honoring the original design of the compound. The additions were designed to be compatible with the existing guest house, complement its small scale, and clearly read as new construction. The new volumes were purposely clad in contrasting materials, such as poplar bark shingles, thermally modified pine, stamped zinc-coated metal, and Shou Sugi Ban siding, to distinguish between the existing and the new, while still complementing the original materials palette. In consultation with arborists, the additions were designed to jog around and preserve the mature existing trees.

A family of five needed a kitchen that would accommodate three growing children. Better Storage organization was key in the redesign. The couple wanted to convert their galley kitchen into a larger space without compromising their dining area. They wanted a learning and gathering place for their children. They longed for a cozy but spacious kitchen to nurture their close-knit family. Their home is small so it was a challenge to create a kitchen that would address all of their needs The client wanted high quality, durable cabinetry with luxury finishes. We designed and installed high quality RUTT Cabinetry, all maple wood, American made cabinetry that will be durable and beautiful for so many years to come. The cabinetry color they chose was a soft gray. The finish is silky smooth. Since they love the marble look, we recommended 48”x48” porcelain wall tiles and a quartz countertop. This material achieves the look they want, is durable and is easy to keep clean. We installed a beautiful white oak wood floor stained in a custom grayish color that added charm to their older home. A vertical floor to ceiling, very stylish, aluminum hot Water radiator which gave them welcome heat. A bronze light fixture with clean lines added elegance and glowing light.

When she’s not on location for photo shoots or soaking in inspiration on her many travels, creative consultant, Michelle Adams, masterfully tackles her projects in the comfort of her quaint home in Michigan. Working with California Closets design consultant, Janice Fischer, Michelle set out to transform an underutilized room into a fresh and functional office that would keep her organized and motivated. Considering the space’s visible sight-line from most of the first floor, Michelle wanted a sleek system that would allow optimal storage, plenty of work space and an unobstructed view to outside. Janice first addressed the room’s initial challenges, which included large windows spanning two of the three walls that were also low to floor where the system would be installed. Working closely with Michelle on an inventory of everything for the office, Janice realized that there were also items Michelle needed to store that were unique in size, such as portfolios. After their consultation, however, Janice proposed three, custom options to best suit the space and Michelle’s needs. To achieve a timeless, contemporary look, Janice used slab faces on the doors and drawers, no hardware and floated the portion of the system with the biggest sight-line that went under the window. Each option also included file drawers and covered shelving space for items Michelle did not want to have on constant display. The completed system design features a chic, low profile and maximizes the room’s space for clean, open look. Simple and uncluttered, the system gives Michelle a place for not only her files, but also her oversized portfolios, supplies and fabric swatches, which are now right at her fingertips.

A couple from Seattle was preparing to move to Michigan and wanted to work with a design firm local to their new home for a kitchen remodel that would meet the needs of their growing family. They were referred to KSI and began their remodel journey with us from 2,000 miles away! The client made it clear that there were several key challenges to address within the space: Remove the double oven in the existing kitchen to optimize available space. Install a new hood vent above the range to add a sleek modern touch. Reconfigure the island to better utilize the space and provide more seating to enhance the functionality and movement within the space. Configure the cabinetry to be full height with a nice crown for more storage and a cohesive, elegant aesthetic. Changing the countertops, backsplash, and sink to refresh and modernize the appearance

Vivid Interiors It all began with an aqua Terrazo tile as the inspiration for -our client's master bathroom transformation. A master suite built for an Edmonds Queen, with walk-in closet, master bathroom, and 2 vanity areas were included. The project also included updates to her powder room and laundry room- which was relocated to the lower level. This allowed us to reframe her master suite area and create a larger, more dramatic, and very functional master bath. Angled walls made space-planning and reframing a challenging puzzle to solve and we not only had to measure the interior, but the exterior angles as well since we were removing walls. Luckily, the large “wet room” concept met the client’s needs and overcame this obstacle. The new space features a stand-alone tub open showering area, as well as sink vanity, and seated makeup area. Additionally, storage needs were addressed with a wall of cabinetry installed adjacent to the new walk-in closet. A serene color palette and a variety of textures gives this bathroom a spa-like vibe and the aqua highlights repeated in glass accent tiles. Our client enjoys her choice of a walk-in shower or soaking tub with bubbles in the modernized space. Storage was desperately needed, as you can see from the before photos, so the en-suite closet was designed in a linear wall configuration. The original Terrazo tile was used as the vertical accent in the corner of the shower and on the top of the rounded shower bench. Our client held onto her inspiration tile for years while she saved to create a budget worthy of this project and its amenities. Budget is always a consideration, and here our client chose to spoil herself. Some unique design features include: • The angled end of the makeup vanity with shelves for toiletries within easy reach of the tub and hidden view. • The makeup vanity side lighting, seated counter and a convenient laundry chute • The free-standing tub is perfectly positioned to create a direct sight-line through the master bedroom to the Puget Sound views beyond. • Wall-mount waterfall filler and controls at the tub eliminate a bulky floor mount faucet. • An angled countertop and glass shelving add interest between the sink vanity and closet cabinetry. • The toilet is tucked out of sight just past the first tall cabinet. • A glass partition blocks overspray from the shower. She now enjoys a spa like retreat every day!

This 1929 Tudor kitchen and porch in St. Paul’s Macalester-Groveland neighborhood was ready for a remodel. The existing back porch was falling off the home and the kitchen was a challenge for the family. A new kitchen was designed that opened up to the dining room, to create more light and sense of space. A small back addition was completed to extend the mudroom space and storage. Castle designed and constructed a new open back porch with Azek composite decking, new railing, and stunning arch detail on the roof to coordinate with the home’s existing sweeping lines. Inside the kitchen, Crystal cabinetry, Silestone quartz countertops, Blanco composite sink, Kohler faucet, new appliances from Warners’ Stellian, chevron tile backsplash from Ceramic Tileworks, and new hardwoods, laced in to match the existing, fully update the space.
